Instant gratification? You just went through an entire season without having one of the first mysteries revealed.

Well. a lot of smaller things were resolved. Mysteries are structured from the top down, but revealed from the bottom up. You've got the BIG mystery looming over everything else (i.e. why are they there, what is the island?), then you've got the mystery elements that lead up to that (the hatcj, the others, etc). Then you've got the mini-mysteries and exploits that go into solving the middle ones.

In a multiple-season series I do not expect them to blow their wads with the larger mysteries yet. They have the basic tenets of the storyline hammered out already, but they can widen to allow for more episodes. That's inherent to the nature of writing a series like this.

I'm the kind of person who will spend hours trying to figure out one word in a crossword puzzle. Maybe you aren't. But don't blame it on the show.

Watched a few pieces under question again:

1) there are two eyes from the monster after the explosion of the dynamite that kate threw in. It is as if the smoke created an outline. (think invisible man style stuff).

2) The others are NOT the same people from another timeline. Although the girl looks like shannon, it is clearly not her upon further inspection. There are 4 of them. They all look ragged and dirty. For having a boat and fuel, they sure dont keep clean.

Also, was it just me or were the numbers seemingly trying to keep Hurley from being on the plane?

His alarm clock died, his car died (at 42 km/hour), and there were a bunch more references to numbers in his flashback that kept stalling him that I cant think of at the moment.....

I like the idea that the voices in the woods are echoes of underground conversations. Also regarding Ethan, is it possible he was working for/with Danielle, and not the Others? And if he was working with the Others, why take Claire? Maybe the Others (or just Ethan) at that time were unaware of Walt, and thought the unborn Aaron was the boy they needed...or maybe both they want both kids.

edit: Didnt early on in the shows airing (near the premiere, I guess), the producers say something like "If the show does not get picked up for a second season, we will be able to answer the mysteries raised thus far by the season's conclusion, but if the show is picked up for a second season we have enough story to tell to really flush it out"....then sometime around December (before the Hatch, I think), ABC picked Lost up for a second season.

Perhaps once they knew they had more time to deal with they started adding auxilary elements to the mystery (from "Why are we on this Island" and 'What the hell is that monster?" to "Who are the Others", "What the hell is in the hatch"). Not just adding more filler stuff, but adding more levels of mystery since they know they have the time to explore these levels. Because of this tiered story development (based upon whether a 2nd season was confirmed or not), perhaps the writers just had too many introductions, story 'hammering out" to actually get to a point where larger mysteries could be unvieled by the finale.

I am probably wrong with the timeline, but oh well. I have enjoyed Lost so far and will turn in next season for more.

demi, you give me a link to a program to do it and you got it.
Can you cut that portion out and send it to me? I can gif it up. If not Ulead gif animator has a free 15 day trial edition on their site.

I mean, I understand the fun at coming to your own conclusions, but at SOME point, it's necessary to reveal the truth...and that point should have been somewhere between the season premiere and the season finale.
Exactly. "Some of your are way too into instant gratification to appreciate it" is horseshit. Gah, if I saw that before I would have went apeshit. :lol

"It's gonna rock peoples' worlds," Lindelof says excitedly. "[It will be] the 'Who Shot J.R.?' of Lost. We want people talking all summer long."

Ummmmmmmm, did I miss something in this episode?

I found this on a Lost fansite messageboard. I'm looking for more.

This host has been awful for me lately, but it's all I have at the moment. Hopefully the image stays up.

So, is this thing not invisible after all? Or at least not all of it?

Well, watching that last bit, I guess I can now say that I was wrong about the ladder. Amazing, how the shitty quality of a VHS recording can obscure details.

God, I hate watching this in standard definition.

Taken as three hours, it is probably one of the best finales ever filmed. Taken as two hours, it's still damn good, but the three all come together so well.

It's similar to how they handled the Desperate Housewives finale. Answer a question or two (In this case, who the Others wanted) but then pose a shitload more. Where does the ladder go? Why do they want Walt? When's Charlie gonna snort his heroin? Is Sawyer dead? Are there sharks in this area? How exactly does that crazy security system work?

In other words, the finale will lead directly into the premiere and at the very least answer the first two questions. In the end, little breakthroughs storywise or not, it was fantastic TV, with a good twist on Walt (Put that together the second Rousseau mentioned that she had heard "The Boy". My mother insisted it couldn't be Walt, since he wasn't a child. I sighed).

September seems so far away...sigh.

Best line?

uh, the DH finale answered a whole lot more than LOST, and didnt open a retarded amount of new ones in the process...

I hope the shows ratings tank next year so the show is cancelled and they are forced to answer some fucking questions.

I love Lost but I have to agree. I want some fucking answers and if the show never ends or has 4-5 seasons, they'll give the answers to us but only in fucking sprinkles.

I looked at those clips, and I hope that that black cloud isn't the monster (because in the first episode, that thing had thunderous footsteps).

And BTW, that cloud is an awful special effect (it looks like MS Paint or something).

Someone said that this'll re-broadcast in the summer and I'll probably catch it then (or some other way).

Here's a paragraph from the 4/15/05 Lost article in EW:

Questions Must Be Answered

"The Model is "Twin Peaks", says Cuse. "It has become a strong lesson for us in not postulating new mysteries without answering old ones". Which means, according to producers, that most of their Big Questions - What's in the hatch? What is the monster? What do Hurley's lotto numbers mean? - have solutions. But how do they know when to disclose them? "Right now, it's just our gut," says Lindelof. "We have ended up in a place where we would rather reveal too much than not enough." Look for the season finale to bring some long-awaited clarifications - and perhaps a new dilemma. "Depending on the reaction, the backlash could be 'I wish you hadn't told me that!' Then we'll have to adjust again," says Lindelof.

It seems like the producers got scared of revealing anything, so instead just gave the audience a few partial answers... But was there really any doubt that they'd get the hatch open, or that Charlie would find the drugs? I guess I got spoiled by Babylon 5 in which major questions were satisfyingly answered (which of course led to new questions).

I'm a big fan of Lost and have followed it from the beginning. It was exciting and the characters were good, and I was having fun going along with the ride. But I can't help feeling let down... I was really hoping that they would give us an answer to one of the major questions. It's also funny that they mention Twin Peaks as a reference. Twin Peaks lost a lot of viewers in it's second season (and was then cancelled) because they didn't give the audience any answers to major questions and kept posing new ones. Hopefully the producers will throw people answers to a few questions before they wind up losing viewers.

So in the end, we still don't know:

What made the plane go down?
What about the passengers in the tail of the plane?
What's the monster?
Who are the others?
What do the numbers mean?
What's in the hatch?

Seeing now that the hatch isn't a "room" or enclosed space(like a shelter/bunker), but rather a long deep tunnel, I wonder how that puts the shining light that Locke saw into perspective.

And the whole "Give us the boy!" thing gave me some "Child's Play" Chucky flashbacks.

Oh, and how hypocritical of Charlie to say "You're pathetic" to Danielle, which was the same thing the chick said to him about the drugs...when he goes and smuggles the Mary statuette full of drugs(assuming he didn't empty it and took it for another reason).

And I knew Arnts was gonna get it....his character was talking way too much for a character that was just introduced out of no where at the tail end of the season. Crazy scene though, and gives Hurley another notch on his one-liner wall.

I have no problem with the "they didn't reveal every single detail, along with schematics and blueprints" thing....After watching Alias since the first season(I still need to watch the last 4 episodes plus last night's finale though)...i'm used to the cockteases. Rambaldi is the biggest goddamn cocktease of all! Still though, the "bottomless" hatch thing doesn't even come close to Alias's seaon 2
OMGWTF GONE FOR 2 YEARS!

Well, the tail of the plane was never found. Then they set it up further when Boone heard "No, we're the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815!" on the radio in the drug plane. They also had Jack meet Ana-Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez) at the bar in the airport, who was anxious about sitting in the back of the plane. She's signed on the show for next season, so I was hoping they would find the tail of the plane or evidence for it in the cliffhanger. I'm now guessing that it'll be the main part of the season premier.

first let me say I loved the finale. Of course it didn't answer all of the questions I hoped it would answer, but in no way do I feel teased or robbed. The show has to accomplish two things to be successful. remain interesting enough to make me want to come back next week, and at the same time give me enough entertainment so that I don't get frustrated or bored with it. IMHO there are many shows that fully entertain me for an hour but then don't ever really get me hooked on wanting to come back next week (Alias), and there are shows that keep me coming back every week while not really completely entertaining me (Smallville). Lost fullfills both requirements.

To those who say id isn't answering enough questions, you have to look at the bigger picture. We have become so accustomed with US television to have shows that are wrapped up in a season. Most season finales are just that. they end the season answering most or all questions, leave a couple questions and a cliffhanger for next season, and then go onto reruns until the fall. I for one am glad that lost is taking a longer approach to this. I don't think anyone can argue that an episode of lost isn't fullfilling. Sure they don't answer questions and wrap things up neatly every few episodes (or even a season), but every episode has the backstory which is usually a rather self contained story in and of itself in the episode, while at the same time either giving us an answer here or there or maybe even a new question.

I am glad we have lost and I agree with those who say it is the best show on TV. I am glad we have a show turning the typical american show on its ear and taking things in a different direction. The writing, directing, and acting are phenomenal and if next season is as good as this season, well, that's all one could ask for. I don't need answers to be fullfilled. I don't even need to feel like there is an end in site to be fullfilled. I just want to be entertained and want a mystery to be unfolded intelligently, as opposed to spoon fed for the typical TV crowd like so many shows are today.

As for my thoughts and questions on the episode in particular. My wife and I were heartbroken when walt was taken. I was really floored when I saw that and have to say that is one of the scariest things ever portrayed on TV. And what the hell happened to Jin? Was he on the raft or was he knocked off? Arzt was just crazy.. I have to admit I am kind of glad he died though. The guy really was bugging me. I don't think the numbers were trying to keep hurley away from the plane because of the island, I think they were trying to keep him away from his mother. I think his mother is dead. I think when he foiled the numbers that they decided on the plane crash. Know that's not 100% foolproof, but I dfon't think there is any good of them.

Jin dove into the water when Sawyer was knocked off. It will be interesting to see what happens to those 3 next season. They're 15 miles out, no raft intact.... I guess they could use whatever can be salvaged and try to float in. This also means the radar that Sayid gave them is ruined.

In hindsight that was a super intense scene. I knew when Danielle said that they wanted the boy that they meant Walt not Aaron... That freaky fisherman dude was creepy as fuck.

Where does all of this leave Danielle? Sayid seemed a litte too understanding, but that was probably just to get the baby back in their posession. Someone needs to take a gun to Danielle and say "Tell us everything you know BEYACTH!!!". The surviviors blindly follow her - maybe Sayid should bust out the bamboo splints again to get some info out of her.

And what about that scene with Locke spilling the beans to Jack about his philosphy? Jack just about shit his pants!

That's probably because it was made into a GIF. It doesn't look that flat on TV.
on TV (in HD at least) it is full 24bit color. in a GIF it is 256 colors that have to be shared with the rest of the picture.

yes, it looks MUCH better on TV.

I enjoyed the episode myself. I'm little upset more questions weren't answered but no where near enough to stop watching the show.

I have to agree with the comments about the Walt abduction scene. That was played out very well and was one of the defining moments of the season for this show. The Others seemed more creepy and weird than Ethan. I've got to find out what is up with them.

I will be front and center at the tv when the second season premiers.

Oh and being able to watch this show in HD and 5.1 surround really paid off last night. There's no doubt that the security system has some mechanical parts. The surrounds really got a work out during the scenes with the monster.

When Michael was explaining the situation to the creepy fisherman i knew something was up, then he's like "... BUT YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO GIVE US THA BOY" - that was off the charts creepy.
