Lost Odyssey IGN AU review

So, for the record, any game with a standard turn based mechanic deserves < 7.5 for gameplay?

Pretty much. Reminds me of Dragon Quest VIII. A good but not great RPG because the combat was so bland.

This doesn't make sense at all.

What I mean is that, I can forgive LO's flaws more easily as it's not building upon anything. Unlike Final Fantasy, which has been through 12 games and I still don't see it as having evolved very much from its core.

While LO definitely has its issues I'm sure, and it may not be as well polished, it's not like it has the budget to be, and I can forgive some issues compared to other games that have had time to build and improve over the course of a series versus a stand alone title.

Only going have twice the budget probably too:lol and far more time to work on it
That doesn't exclude the fact that when it does come out, it will deserve a better score then LO. It doesn't matter what one company can spend over the other, the bottom line is FF will be better then LO. I'm not saying that LO is a bad game or anything, but I know with the budget square has and time they will spend to work on it that it will warrent the 9+ score it will get.

BD weakest track is the normal battle theme, pretty boring, other tracks were great but overall, LO is better IMO.

I don't think he ever played a FF.

Each main FF is totally different...

Aye, I have played the FF series. I do agree that each new FF is vastly different from the prior one in terms of story, character development, music, setting, etc etc.

But when I pick up FFVII and then pick up FFX 5 minutes later I feel like I'm playing the same game as the combat system is all very similar to me. Having sunk so much time into the abyss that is the MMO of FFXI I found FFXII to be eerily too similar, and it was a major turn off finding that the "new" combat system was just kind of a rip from a previous installment.

Some great tracks from PSU (for those interested)...

Save This World -Orchestra Version-
Neudaiz
Mirei
Ohtoku City -Neudaiz-
Guardians
The First Story
Obel Dallgun
Ancient Civilization
Contamination -Fire-
Sadness
Hakura Temple
S.E.E.D
Resolution
The Hunt -The End of Planets-
Epilogue 1
Moatoob
Alfort Tylor
Dagora City -Moatoob-
My Room
Brave Fight
The Vibe -The End of Planets-
Overture
For Brigher Day -Orchestra Version- (really beautiful theme)

by that logic, time+money = score, Duke Nukem Forever deserves a 12.

Actually, let's cut the argument here. If you enjoy game music, you really should do yourself a favor and check out some of those soundtracks. It doesn't matter whether or not you prefer LO, really. They are all worth listening to.

Why are you just brushing them off as nothing? I don't understand that attitude. I'd be all over the ones I haven't heard just to check out something new.

I'm not saying LO has a poor soundtrack either. It's simply that, even after multiple listens, there were only a few tracks that really grabbed me. The main theme is INCREDIBLE, but so many of the other songs felt rather dull.

Way to discredit my opinion.

Stop right there.

I didn't discredit your opinion! I merely stated that we have very different tastes and it's difficult for us to objectively argue against each other on the merits of our preferences because we aren't even near being in the same page.

;)

So now i understand why you feel how you feel about Lost Odyssey OST, and since music is Art, it's poised to be very subjective and will resonate differently with different types of people. The hater bit was a joke...you know a metaphor for how Gaf posters usually face a different opinion...

Well, both are turn-based rpg's. That's still a genre, so the games do have similarities..

So when you play Unreal you feel like playing Halo, or something like that?

...but you were so very dismissive. I'm suggesting that we cease the argument. I think you might really enjoy a lot of those, yet you just blow them off. Why not give them a chance? Would you like some samples of various soundtracks listed there? I could easily upload a sampler (from various soundtracks) to sendspace for you.

Depends on the game, I just feel FF games to be really lacking in combat, I know a lot of people like them, it's just a turn off for me. I realize it's a genre style but it's not like they throw very much in to spice that turn based combat up a bit. Just kinda gets repetitive to me.

And as to the unreal halo thing, I haven't gotten to play the most recent UT but if it's anything like the first, no.

I approach both games radically different. The way of actually playing them is just... different. Not quite sure how to describe it, but I suck at UT but I'm fairly decent at halo XD

Edit: that LO music kicked ass XD

FF7 and X may have similarities, but there were pretty large changes made to it.

FFXI and FFXII, however, were ENTIRELY different.

Sure, the ones i haven't heard, i'm all ears. That's why i said i hadn't heard them...i could've lied.

OK, I'll do that.

In the meantime, could you list your favorite tracks in LO? I'd like to give them another listen.

So SE isn't playing fair because they have time, staff, and budget? I remember Saguchi (spelling I know) from Mistwalker saying he was gonna kill FF. I really liked that comment and I love that attitude, but I knew it wasn't true. Not any time soon at least. He knows what he's up against.

So I believe had LO been named FF, it would still have gotten the same exact score, because a true FF will be a better game.

I really don't like this butt-guitar style of Uematsu's. If only all songs on the OST could be of the same quality as "Epsylon Range"...

Well the OST for a game this size that has lot's of different setpieces, needs a diverse score.

It's not as easy as keeping it to 1 style, or trying to make every track work around the main theme which is what action adventure games that have a much smaller lenght do.

And what happens is, some people will like something slow more other something faster more. If every track was as slow as epsylon range, the overall soundtrack of the game would suck.

Does anyone know if this game is region freem (aka, that I can,as a PAL gamer, import it from videogamesplus.ca?)

As a PAL gamer, you should buy the asian version. It's been out for a while already and is cheap. We had a thread about it.

:lol Uematsu sucks with electric guitars.

Unfortunately youtube lacks the various Megaten soundtracks so I'm just gonna go with this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-ETxWmgjaE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cPoScUFVcg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IckRhKXfWxo

Modern > Orchestrated

Those 2 last tracks are horrible imo. What's that? Tetris music? Sounds like some music you made with some basic electronic instruments in your garage and put it on some arcade game.

Edit:

Different feel but still:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=WT6QVsWKQ5g (It really enhances a beautiful moment in the game)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=DbeGTgt0RWQ
http://youtube.com/watch?v=qFOsFLjBP94 (beautiful, just powerful)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=eu3bbpZmMA4 (another beautiful piece)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=KNa1W9cj8NA (main theme)

Seriously it's just beyond.

Ya that would really have been great if Sakaguchi managed to bitch slap Final fantasy and then we would have two series competing with each other to claim the thrown. Competition between game in the same genre is always good, like the many great FPS titles as a result of fierce competition. Imagine if Sakaguchi had level 5 as his hands instead of Feel plus and Artoon? Fuck

for those who have played LO, is there any some sort of FFX like summoning in this game? i really dig that feature in FF series.

All you do is laugh. And then post some really rather underwhelming and crappy tracks. At least make some comments like i do, check those tracks i mentioned, if you think the stuff you posted even comes close, then shit, to each his own.

No.

8.0? Good. Or, "Impressive."

I'll be getting this day-one either way, but I do hope it generally gets good reviews. NO I haven't really played it yet, but Blue Dragon was really underrated, big time, throughout most critics.

One more week. :D

What's wrong with you people?

Both themes are horrible and nobody cares which one sucks most. I'm really tired of outdated 80's metal noise that's supposed to get me 'hyped up' for turn-based combat in Japanese RPG's. I think it actually makes the combat seem even more repetitive than it already is.
And if I have to listen to a battle theme, I'd rather listen to the next carmina burana rip-off.

I wish more developers would go in this direction:

Fahrenheit/ Indigo project
The soundtrack was a well received aspect of the game, receiving praise from various sources. Impressed by his previous work on soundtracks for David Lynch films, David Cage after several failed experiments with other composers decided to enlist Angelo Badalamenti onto the project. Cage did not want the soundtrack to be composed of generic orchestral pieces in the vein of John Williams or Carmina Burana, but instead more emotional and atmospheric, something that he felt Badalamenti achieved. Further licensed pieces of music were used in the game, these could also be unlocked for later listening:

* Theory of a Deadman — Santa Monica (Official Song)
* Theory of a Deadman — No Surprise
* Theory of a Deadman — Say Goodbye
* Theory of a Deadman — No Way Out
* Teddy Pendergrass —Love TKO
* Ben E. King — Street Tough
* Patrice Rushen — Hang It Up
* Bobby Byrd — Try It Again
* Society's Bag — Let it Crawl
* Leee John — Just An Illusion
* Nina Simone — No Good Man
* Martina Topley-Bird — Sandpaper Kisses

I even bought Topley-bird's album Quixotic afterwards.
Sandpaper Kisses : beautiful
