Loving the shopkeepers in SPLATOON

Ever wonder what the bottom of an Inkling's shoe looks like?

Bam!

There it is.

The attention to detail is second to none.

Definitely the game I'm most looking forward to in 2015. Moreso than even Zelda.

I'm not certain to be honest. I haven't seen enough of Zelda yet to say, but my top three for 2015 are Splatoon, Zelda and Persona 5. Assuming P5 gets a UK release in 2015 at least.

I don't inderstand why people are going so apeshit over the designs in this game.

They are very generic and reminiscent of many 90's cartoons. But people are acting like it's some super new style.

Disclaimer: Yes you don't have to be a bald space marine to be generic. You can be generic in other styles.

You enlarged the definition of generic so much that now it includes all the game characters ever designed.

Edit: to clarify, everything can be a reminiscent of 80's cartoon, 80's movies, 90's movies, 80's music videos, 70's radio shows and so on.

i feel the same way, the game looks very fun but the character design, really not for me.

Maybe I've been eating too many spicy ika chips lately, but this game consistently makes me hungry.

Especially that ebi fry shopkeeper.

The designs are growing on me. I first dismissed it as one of those cartoony design I'd soon forget, but looking at more screenshots of designs, expressions, etc made me like them more.

If you take a screenshot of that shop in OP and show it to me in 2008, I'll never guess it's a Nintendo game.

Not many game use this style and in a good way.

It is okay to be in the minority. Nothing wrong with that.

For the rest of us. This game looks so good. Love everything about it. So much personality.

I think the art style is appropriate. The JSR vibe is strong but more than that I think the reference is ultimately urban sport courts and the culture around them. I do like a lot what we've been seeing so far.

Unless you can actually name/show some cartoons that look like this I think you nailed down why so many are loving the designs. It feels like it's straight out of some 90s cartoon, without actually BEING straight out of a 90s cartoon. It's reminiscent of this and that, but far from generic and they've got their own unique theme and style going that is seemingly spawning an endless amount of fun, creative designs. The fan-art following the game has is no coincidence, the game looks fresh and very fun.

Does this run on the Nintendo Land engine? The footage where you're running through the plaza looks very familiar although it might just be the similar concept.

Neiteio threads are great. I love how he singles out certain things in games, whether it's the shopkeepers in Splatoon or the spider in Bloodborne, and writes an enthusiastic post about them.

Every company should hire Neiteio as a hype-man... If they already haven't, and (s)he's just very discrete about it.

I wholeheartedly agree about the shopkeepers. This game just oozes style, but I thought it was just gonna stick to Inklings and the Octopi. From the shell-hat on the horseshoe crab to the clownfish in the anemone's hair I like their takes on these other species!

Decided to make my own Splatoon FanSprite :) Of COURSE I'd have to do one of the Shy Glasses-wearing... group! Hope you can actually tell the Clownfish is there...

@ Gagaman: I saw your added more to your TempuraShrimp on Tumblr, hope you update it here too if you do more to it!

I dunno if its just me but seeing how much effort they put into this whole customization and shops thing I feel like they originally thought to test their waters with a free to play game with cosmetic microtransactions but the reception was so good they decided against it and are moving towards a full fledged IP. Which could tie in with their original decision to not make it a mario game cuz they didn't want to possibly taint that franchise if the reception for a free to play game would not go over well. When I saw the recent trailer the first thing it reminded me of was playstation Home where you like walk around a central mall sorta deal. Especially with the recent free to play offerings they seem to be going into kinda concerns me a bit. Maybe its just those free to play games thats making me think Splatoon coulda been one also. In any case I hope they stick to just cosmetics a la Smite. This whole pay or wait thing would tick me off royally if they applied it to too many games moving forward.

It's an interesting theory, but they were really pushing Splatoon hard at E3 and they hadn't shown it prior to that. I think it might have started out as a free to play but during development Nintendo realized they had something special.

Wasn't even planning to, but hey, since you asked! :)

Eh, games had loads of costumes and such long before microtransactions became a thing. At it's best, "pay or wait" is simply the same as "wait and earn" from early 2000s and earlier games, just with "pay" as an option for those who have more money than time.

Even if Splatoon has some Microtrans, managed right, they do nothing by add options to a product.

But for now, they just add some fun incentive to long term play. I'm good with that. More than potential microtransactions, I'm wondering how well having abilities attached to certain clothes will work out. Hopefully the need to wear "the best" clothes doesn't lead to everyone looking exactly the same. Doing such a thing would make much of the customization aspect much less interesting after a few weeks / months of play.

At this point, I just want to them to show:

- Huge, elaborate, super-memorable boss enemies for the single-player campaign
- Local multiplayer options

I really hope they find a way to make local multiplayer work, and work well.

Really digging this style. Cute, silly, and incredibly original. Didn't know you could even buy clothes and stuff like that. Nice!
