LTT...wat? Shadow of the Colossus

This is so stupid. When you're talking about a game described as epic, then the very limited amount of gameplay variety should be noted. There is no change of weapons. There is very little exploration other than following the damn rumble, there are no enemies except a variation on the same on over and over, the story is minimal through the first half of the game, there are no NPCs to interact with.

I understand the game is supposed to be barren, but at some point you're doing nothing but fighting a different version of the same boss fight over and over with NOTHING else.

That's not epic, it's boring and lazy.

Dito.
But you know...since the announcement of Twilight Princess back then, everything on a Sony-system is called "epic". Useless phrase these days.

No. They don't measure the majority/minority. The only people that matter in this debate are those who have played it.

What i said. And i said that the majority of those people liked/found ok SotC, but don´t "love" it and arent as vocal as the minority of stubborn fanboys that call anyone out with "you dont get it", when you say you don´t love the game. That´s all.

All that stuff you just listed? Exactly the stuff that makes the game feel epic to me. So it's all a matter of taste. Yours is as valid as mine and these threads are dumb. In fact, what am I doing here? *turns around and walks out*

You certainly seem to have an agenda against Sony topics don't you! If only Ico and SOTC had been on the N64, eh!

SOTC and Ico were amazing games. Theyre not for everyone that needs their games to be uniformly similar in their progression and construction (village > dungeon > fodder minions > switch puzzle > boss) but that was sort of the point to them, as laid out by Ueda.

What people mainly object to is, years later, this game wasn't for you but the desire to post a "HUH, WHY DOES ANYONE LIKE THIS" topic just paints you as an ignorant buffoon, especially with hyperbole like "unplayable mess" and "boring and lazy".

Don't bother, man. It's not worth it. This is the same guy who said sales figures = right/wrong majority/minority.

This is an excellent game, one of the best on the PS2, a game that is very gameplay driven, the replay value is there in the form of the time trials, and this is almost a perfect short-burst gaming session that you'll find for this type of genre since it is essentially a boss run. I like this game much better than Ico mainly for the reason that it is gameplay rather than experience driven as Ico loses some of its luster after the first play through as the story has blown its load.

Spoiler complaints?

This is a LTTP thread.

GTFO.

It is 2009.

The game came out 4 years ago.

AERIS DIES.

to be fair, lttp threads can be made by people who haven't actually finished the games yet, so spoilers should be marked accordingly.

never played ico but SOTC would be even shittier.

Seriously if the boss fights were actually fun i probably wouldn't have hate the game so much despite my gripes about everything else.

I got a chance to play and finish this over christmas, and I gotta say I was blown away by it.
Utter genius through and through. the feelings and thoughts that it provokes in the player so subtly. the beautiful world and aesthetic. The pacing. The involving controls that made me almost feel like I was holding on for dear life at points. The brilliant and varied designs of the collosi that are puzzles that incorporate the surrounding environment in really clever ways.
And the ending was the best ending I have ever experienced. Even during the last sequence the player is holding on for dear life and it makes it so much more compelling and involving than just watching a cinematic.

I also got to finish God Hand. which was fucking amazing as well in a very different, old school way.

The silent majority, eh?

I'm not sure why you seem so sure that the majority of people who purchased the game merely found it decent, and didn't love it. You might not be wrong, but it's an odd claim to make with such certainty given absolutely no hard information.

The annoying fanboys drive me into that direction, you know. And that´s not exclusive to SotC, but why would someone who found a game "only" decent be vocal about that? It´s probably the case for many games, but until now no GTA4-fan came up to me and told me that i was a bad person if i didnt love GTA4 :)

I never knew it was possible to be criticised and hated on this much for not liking a game.

I agree 100% with hokahey, this game was a huge letdown... a colossal letdown if you will. I'm not going to get into any specifics, but for reasons you listed and more I hate everything about this game. I hate that it was completely over hyped, over rated, and played like shit. I hate that I spent money on it because of it's overwhelmingly positive reviews and critical acclaim. I hate it's whole take-a-gimmick-and-make-an-entire-boring-game-out-of-it philosophy.

I hate the fact that it even exists and that there are masses of loyal fanboys who defend it to the end.

I hate Shadow of the Colossus with every fiber of my being and I welcome others to shift their hate off of hoka and onto me.

The game had potential for greatness, but I tried to get into it recently and couldn't.

The controls/animation are just awful. Here's hoping the next ICO game doesn't suffer like SoTC did in this regard.

There's something wrong with you.

colossus is the singular

colossi is the plural

I read like 5 pages in and didn't see this pointed out so I skipped to the end. Sorry if it's been pointed out already.

It's sad that the sheer majesty of the game can be so utterly lost on someone - makes you lose faith in humanity in a kind of insignificant way.

Just picked this up yesterday and it is pretty cool so far, beat the second colossus.

I can see why someone wouldn't like this game, but i like the feeling of solitude the same way i did in Metroid Prime.

Also i like the horse controls.

I have to say that I thought I'd like SOTC more than I did. The graphics and atmosphere are stunning but I also found it quite depressing to play and lost interest around the 6th colossus or so.

3.)

Beat circle smash, and he is the most impressive colossus, yet.

X-fast trick is imperative, now, for my enjoyment of this game.

It feels like with every colossi; the overwhelming feeling of confusion increases.

Seriously; a good game though.
