LTTP: Band of Brothers

I haven't watched the full, unedited series since it was on HBO. I've watched parts of episodes on History Channel and Spike since then. I really need to watch the Blu-Rays soon. I bought the book a few weeks ago. I need to read it, too.

Here is a spoiler: Hitler dies at the end.

Well yeah, but everyone knows that.

I'm sure not everyone knows which soldiers of the company survived and which did not before seeing BoB.

I hope I didn't spoil OP on previous page.
don't think they showed that character again anyway save for one short scene?

Great series. The greatest? Debatable. I know a lot of people like The Wire. I think BoB is better by far.
I would say band of brothers is the finest mini series ever created. And definitely the best "anything" about War.

I watch this series about once every six months. Looks like its about that time.

What the fuck?
You watched it so many times so I think you forget that the characters can sort of all blend in together at first, The Wire had a similar problem, but yeah, if he thinks so by the series end, something off with the guy.

p.s.
I'm probably alone in this, but I think Why We Fight is weakest episode in the series.

I imported from Amazon UK, got the steelbook bluray set for like 40 AUD (35 USD) including international shipping.

I got in on that deal too, it's an amazing set.

Still need to watch it with the missus at some point, but we're still working through the TNG Blu-ray releases.

Just curious, what do you mean with this?

Like most World War 2 films, the Nazis are just seen as canon fodder. Their deaths are almost always less painful than the Americans', and when they do die brutally, it's almost played for laughs. When that one German gets crushed by the tank it's in the middle of a "Hell yeah!" moment, just like when the sniper gets shot through his scope in Saving Private Ryan.

The scene with the prisoners, and their subsequent execution, is a stiff reminder that these men are just as human, and in many ways just as innocent as the Americans. Their cause is inherently evil and unjustifiable, but many of these soldiers were so brain-washed that they just were doing what they thought was right. It's a bit like the situation in Afghanistan today, where many Taliban soldiers are taught that they need to defend their country from foreign barbarians, and don't know much else.

It's a shame that Pacific never got as good as BoB. If rumors are true, Spielberg and Hanks are working on a mini-series featuring the 8th Bomber Group.

Could be fun.

Pretty sure its been confirmed a long time ago.

According to his reddit AMA Hanks was told by HBO they wanted another WWII show and Hank picked that one. Would have been a perfect opportunity to finally get something about the Eastern Front, but I guess Hanks isn't interested in telling that story. shame

The Pacific would have been tremendous if it had been focused on Sledge and Philips. The Leckie and Basilone arcs never feel fully cooked by their respective ends.

As for the next Hanks/Spielberg show, I suppose looking at the Allied bombing campaign gives them the chance to explore the immoral, less glory-glory actions of America in WW2. I agree with everyone else that a story set on the Eastern Front would be much more interesting.

Ah, that's what I figured, just thought you worded it oddly. BoB was really good about that aspect, you should definitely continue watching.

After finishing, your next watch should be the extended cut of Das Boot (if you haven't already seen it, that is).

Valhelm, if you end up really liking the show by its end (and it would be impossible not to love it) and want more war, skip The Pacific for a later time and go straight to Generation Kill. Of course it isn't as good as BoB but it would be a bit hard to be as good, as BoB reigns supreme over everything. It does have a large cast of characters though and similar to BoB they are all pretty likable. It also has a fair share of incompetent leaders, so if you liked Sobel then there at least four characters you will love. And it has Alexander Skarsgård in it, who is just awesome in everything he does.

What is crazy is that I know a couple of people who prefer GK to BoB. I can kind of understand where they are coming from though (mainly a position of "I can relate to GK easier because that is my war. I saw that shit and did that shit").

I need to watch BoB again soon. I've only seen it so many times already but I don't think I will ever get tired of it. I had my wife mail me a bunch of stuff last year and she forgot disc one of the set. And I have forgotten about disc one both times I have been home. I was about to list my favorite episodes but there isn't a single one that isn't my favorite.

I second this and it should also be mentioned that GK is also from The Wire creator David Simon. .

One of the best moments in the series is when (Episode 9 spoilers)
Webster starts screaming at the Germans in episode 9 (?).
Such a powerful moment, which puts things in perspective again. Some nutjob thinking he can do what he wants shouldnt have such an impact on the world.

Great series and probably the best miniseries

You should put spoiler tags on that, Valhelm hasn't finished the show yet (I don't think).

Oh, really? I've actually only heard bad things about Generation Kill in comparison Band of Brothers -- "It's too realistic", "Speilberg wasn't involved", etc --, but now I'm inclined to give it a shot.

I watched "Replacements" just now. The combat sequence was incredible, and the bayonet scene was crazy.

Edit: LOL

I can't remember why my buddy told me he didn't like it a couple years ago when I first expressed interest in wanting to see it, but he is the only person I have spoken to who has not liked it.
The cast and characters are just fantastic. I don't know, the only bad thing I can think of about it is the low number of episodes; it feels like it over way too quick and I wanted more. I ended up buying the book and reading it immediately after I finished the show, just because I wasn't ready to be done with it yet. I liked it more than any of the films out there that are about the Iraq or Afghanistan invasion/war.
Looking back at the opinion in the GK thread it seems like it was received well enough by the few that watched it. I've mentioned it in another BoB or HBO thread (and have yet to do it), but I really want to make a RTTP for it. I probably won't ever get around to it or any of the other LTTP/RTTP/OTs that I think about making though.

You really need to watch it.

I'm also 3 eps deep. Stopped watching because I took into the Sopranos, but will go back to it. Took a while to get over watching Ross play soldier.

I would argue that, as a whole, it is the best ~10 hours captured to film. Even the weakest episode (the one with the pale scared dude...can't remember the name of him or the episode) is better than 99% of TV/movies.

I'm really tempted to pick up the series again on Blu ray if I find a deal sometime.

Sobel was an asshole but he was also responsible for one of the best "haha in your face fucker" scene later in the serie lol.

"Captaib Sobel, you salute the rank, not the officer" BOOOOOM

I remember reading the book, pretty much everybody said that as much as they hated Sobel, they gave him a lot of credit for how well they operated and fought.

You should also watch The Pacific. It is pretty good although not as good as Band of Brothers. BoB is the best mini-series EVAR!

I don't know. I absolutely hated The Pacific when you compare it to Band of Brothers, and that is something that you always do considering it is from the same creators. It is not a terrible mini-series, but BoB is in a league of its own.

When I comapre Band of Brothers to The pacific I often wonder what role the BBC played in the former show. It seemed like a lot of HBO's liberal use of sex, violence and forced drama were curtailed by the BBC's mandate to create a, at least, somewhat more focused show.

Possibly one of the better tv shows I've seen, at least.

Also I agree that the show gets better the second (and even third) time your re-watch it.

There is so many characters that it can be really confusing the first time you watch it. It took me at least 2 viewing to know and recognize all the characters.

I think why we fight and the the last patrol are the two least good episodes. Noticed I said least good because they're not bad by any stretch.
