LTTP: Baten Kaitos

Well, I actually got this game a few months ago but didn't pop it in until just a few days ago. After getting past the
space-shooter part
, I discovered that this is one of the best games on Gamecube. The music is amazing, the battle system is addicting and involves a huge amount of strategy and the plot has managed to suck me in. The only problem I have with the game is the voice-acting. Ugggh. But I noticed it starts to grow on you. Slowly but surely.

I also love the graphical style. I'm not sure I've ever seen a prettier Gamecube game. The way everything is so vivid and subtle at the same time is beautiful.

So, um... Discuss.
 
Make sure you play Origins right after this one. It basically does everything better (especially voice acting and pacing, battle system remains a matter of personal taste) and that's saying a lot.
 
I thought this was a very good game when I played through it, the story too. You can tell there are some talented people behind it, trying to do some different things. Kudos to them.
 
I liked the style of the first game, but Origins felt so empty and soulless. Didn't finish both (actually, hardly started both). In my opinion, GAF overrated this way too much. It's not bad, but to say it's one of the best things out there, I don't think it is.

The game is pretty f'ing long if I remember correctly, and it naturally carries you through. Now that I think about Baten Kaitos, I think that game affected my life after considering some things that happened in it. It is very interesting...

I tend to agree...but I also was not held attentive by Final Fantasy X, whereas with this game I was.
 
I just picked it up too. I am about 15 hours in. I don't have any major problems with it except the voice acting. It's pretty solid overall. The battle system keeps you on your toes when you're defending ( and attacking after some class ups). I like the way they include the player in the story, pretty original.
Hopefully it'll stay good all the way through so i can be excited about picking up Origins.
 
The first, let´s say, 5 hours are horrible. I was about to quit playing the game, but, well, i had no other game at the time. But the longer you play, the better it gets.
Awsome game, that any RPG-fan should have played.
 
The first 10-15 hours of the are pretty dull, stupid Empire wants to take over the world with a magical power.. but once the game picks up, it gets real good.

The game's fault was the poor presentation. It felt really cheap, especially the re-used enemy models and mostly poor monster areas. I found my cards becoming a huge mess near the end of the game, especially since the magus decay. The Voice Acting sound quality was also very poor, although I enjoyed the voices themselves.

The game is pretty long, especially if you decide to do the museum, Star Chart and all the Ouzman family quests.
 
Great game, but the sequel is better. Finishing BK1 does make the cameos and story in BKO have a more "OH ****!" feeling, though.

And considering we probably will be getting BK3, this was a good choice on your part.
 
I hate the story in both games. I think the art is ugly. However, the battle system is so fun that I happily played through both games.
 
Origins seems to be getting a good amount of praise. I'll be sure to play that once I get a Wii. Should I go through both games, or can I skip the first one?

I so totally agree. This soundtrack is so good but so often overlooked. The plot was meh for a while, but it had the best twist in an RPG I have ever seen.

Haven't played Origins (once again, damn you NOE), but I can definetly recommend Baten Kaitos. Story and Characters are okay, some of the backgrounds are spectacular and gameplay is fine too.

Btw, Origins is a prequel to the first game, but I heard that the gameplay of Orgins makes it hard to go back to Baten kaitos 1. Don't know if that's true, but I suggest playing the first one and than the second game.

Yeah, seeing all the cameos in BKO is awesome.
Ladekahn, Palolo II, and Gibari = best trio EVER

And let's hope you're right on BK3. Let's hope you're right.

I liked the original Baten Kaitos' battle system better. 1-9 chains with the right element scoring like 7k+ damage is so awesome

Plus the special attack voice acting is so bad that it's good.

I thought this too at first, until the real powers of burst are unlocked.. thens its holy long ass chains ftw
 
loved the first one, still havent finish it tho, cuz i left my game at my home home (other country) 2 years ago.

so i dont want to play Origin before beating the first one

The battle system is a lot of fun! i personally like it more than TOS on Gamecube.

since everyone love the battle system, and its a collecting card base battle, Nintendo should make it wifi online battle with other user for BK III :)
 
Just about to go in for the end-run of the game after a couple more character-specific side scenarios. Been thoroughly enjoying the battle system, overall graphics/art, and some nice little twists the story throws at you.

Yeah, the first game has some nice twists to it.

Maybe I'll replay the first BK this summer.
 
I just started up Baten Kaitos today. I happened to pick up a used copy with a sealed OST from TRU for 12$ the other day. The game discs, while used, are absolutely perfect. The game looks rather pretty and reminds a little of CT and CC. The card/magnus setup is peculiar, but again, I just started. I assume they give a more detailed walkthrough on what to do in the battles later on, correct? Any tips offhand you guys can share?

I really hope I like this game that way when I'm done I don't have to wait for a sequel/prequel. :P

Congratulations on discovering one of the best RPGs from last gen. Pick up Baten Kaitos Origins while you can still find it, I suggest.
 
So I finally started playing this.

I like the music and art, really reminds me a lot of Cross so far in that respect. Can't say the battle is too thrilling, but it's also not the worst I've played either. I'm interested enough to keep going for now. I mostly like the art.

Edit: The battle music is amazing.
 
Play Origins.

And anyone who loves The True Mirror track (like meee!)
make sure to find its orchestrated version from Origins.... zomg such an amazing moment in the game when that played I was like whoooooooooooooooooo!
<3 <3 Baten Kaitos, both games have such glorious OSTs.
 
It's a shame the sequel was US-only, really. If I had a Wii freeloader I'd get it, but we'll have to wait and see if they make one.
 
One of the first RPGs where I actually wanted to battle and level up because the system was so damn fun. Not to mention I loved the battle music. One of my favourite games ever.
 
Does origins get better after the first 7 hours or so? I love BK, but found Origins very boring and drab so far, so I quit. Does the game get better?
 
As was said earlier in the thread, it's impossible to say overall which of the two game are better, as it's largely left up to your own preference (though I will agree that the voice acting on the second game is much better). I'm playing through both games at the moment as well, though I'm going in reverse order (playing the prequel first) as, like Lufia, playing the first game first actually spoils part of the second game.
 
The snow land shortly into the second disk completely killed the tepid enthusiasm I had towards the game so far.

Still haven't picked it up again.

The top-down throwback dungeon was completely awesome though.

Same deal, I got to the Calm Lands in FFX and stopped. For some reason, I love getting close-ish to the end of RPGs and just not finishing them.
 
A month later than planned, but finally went through the final end-run. Enjoyable through to the end, though the ending itself lasted longer than expected...I had to head out soon and it just kept adding more and more in...:lol

Going to finish again and make sure I didn't miss anything.

Looking forward now to Origins, though still waiting until I know I have a solid batch of hours cleanly available to give it a good start.
 
I picked this game last week, along with Origins, but the first game doesn't have a Instructions Manual, could someone explain me the Battle system? I've been playing the game for 2 hours and I am doing well, but I feel I'm doing something wrong

Fun battle system, and game at that, then it all just grew to annoy the piss out of me. I'd explain it, but then I'd be really bothered.
 
I thought it was the coolest thing ever when
the main character turned out to be the bad guy, who'd been using everyone else the whole time.

I was really looking forward to
getting to kill him as the last boss, and then it would have been the coolest thing ever. Instead it did the ridiculously stupid "Oh, I like you guys so I think I'll be a good guy after all!" schtick and turned into yet another cliche Japanese RPG.

Meh. The game looked pretty, and I liked the battle system. Weeding out rotting vegetables in my card deck got annoying fast, though.

Um.... that's a huge fucking spoiler. You should probably put a warning or something for people who haven't played the game/reached that far yet.
