LTTP: Berserk (manga version)

As someone who recently just finished reading Berserk, I feel people really overrate and over-exaggerate that say the Golden Age is the best part of the manga. There are still plenty of just as awesome portions of the manga in later arcs and I feel the story is getting better and better, as is the art.

Yup.

I mean the Golden Age is still pretty good and perfectly sets the stage for what happens, but I vastly prefer the crazy shit that is happening after that.

I agree. The Conviction Saga was a great follow up. Loved seeing Guts progress from the
events of the Eclipse
. Hawk of the Millennium Empire Saga was also fantastic from
the Hill of Swords, to Guts getting the Berserker armor, and the Holy Demon War.

I wish Miura would just one day double-down and take a few years of Idolmaster to finish the manga. Just draw like crazy and let the backup artists do the heavy detailing. Get the damn story done half a volume a month.

The arc that really made me say "this is amazing" is
when guts finally rescue ed caska but along the journey he found out he just couldn't keep up protecting her and curly admitted he couldn't do it and caska ended up hating him, afterwards when his new crew all formed, he said line along the lines of "stay wi the them, because I can't protect you" or something that, it was so sad and touched me :(

I wonder of he's still playing the shit out of idol master. The golden age arc is the best arc, everything sort of slowly gets less interesting after it IMO.

Yeah I agree. Not to mention that I feel the art got worse too in terms of details. But at the very least I do really adore his style, even if it isn't at its peak any more.

Probably it's a matter of the thing just going on too long. I guess his livelihood depends on it, but much like with other super long running series such as Hajime no Ippo, you can really just see it losing steam as they try to wrench out those last drops till retirement.

Miuras gdlk art fits berserks theme beautifuly

Too bad miura is too busy playing idolm@ster

only half joking

The Golden Age is the best arc I ever read. I don't think anything will ever come close.

The relationship between Guts and Griffith is one of the best from any medium for me.

Please Miura stop with the Idolmaster nonsense and get back to it.

Manga went downhill when they introduced the shitty friends. Liked it much more when it was just guts alone wandering around beating demons, now it feels more lighthearted and just not as interesting as it used to be.

Especially the whole "everyone is in love with Guts" thing that's kind of going on right now

Yup totally agreed. I really just want some sort of conclusion right now, it's gone on for too long with no satisfactory resolution in sight. Absolutely hate the whole Guts and his merry band thing going on.

The entire point is for Guts to become "human" again. He's not going to be accomplishing that by doing nothing but slaying stuff. I could do with less Isidro but the rest of his group is fine. Personally, I find Serpico and Farnese to be good characters. Anyways, the series has always had lighthearted elements right from the get go. Seriously, Puck was the second major character introduced.

Gotta agree with Azuran here, it'd also be rather stale if his character just stayed as the cynical, lonely Black Swordsman we know from the previous arcs. I think it's natural how he's starting to trust in others again and feel a sense of belonging.

This. The Golden Age had just as many light-hearted moments, but purists only choose what they want to see. Farnese and Serpico have more interesting backstories than the majority of the Band of the Hawk. Berserk has always been about the extreme balance of light and darkness, so I feel the new cast is appropriate and just as interesting (if not more) than the Band of the Hawk. And Black Swordsman era Guts is the least interesting aspect of that character. He feels like that archetypical, edgy 90's comic-book anti-hero during that time, when in fact he's much more than that. The subsequent arcs have helped give him some needed character development.

Especially the whole "everyone is in love with Guts" thing that's kind of going on right now

Guess what happened the last time Guts got a bunch of friends. I really hoping we get another eclipse like event to drive Guts into even deeper into revenge. Only then can he abandon his humanity to become something like the skull knight and hopefully put him one step closer to touching Griffith.

The Lost Children arc was great but yeah, Guts' character progression needed to move forward, although I always found the first three volumes of Guts to be incredibly angry to the point later on in the manga when it catches up to be extremely weird, he suddenly mellowed out like a lot. It might have been because Miura didn't fully have the story planned out at the time.

Also lol @ the IDOLM@STER complaints in 2015, they were funny in 2008 guys, it's more so the detail Miura puts into his artwork over everything else that takes up so much time.

I do think a lot those comments comes from anime watchers and/or related to extremely slow releases which naturally hurts the flow of a story. Because the Conviction and Millenium Arc have so many incredible moments , while still retaining the traits of the characters , that makes it hard to understand the differentiated appreciation for different sections of the story.

I've never watched the anime and I still think the golden age arc is the best arc - simply because it starts off as a relatively normal story about a band of medieval mercenaries before devolving into a story of pure horror. After that you pretty much know that anything fucked up goes.

It's been August or September since we last had a chapter right? And when he was cranking them out it would take a month for a chapter? less? he just isn't as interested in pumping out chapters like he use to.

Today is Eclipse day. Im just saying...

Is there a link to this somewhere? I keep hearing jokes about the guy just playing Idolmaster all the time but I've never seen the news for myself.

It's just a recurring joke because he commented in one of the young animal issues that he was feeling sad and lonely and bought a 360 to play Idolmaster. And then there was some other news about a friend who said he and Miura spent a couple hours talking about it.

Ok . I do think it might be my favorite too (or the Millennium one) but i just think its exaggerated how sometimes there's an extremely abrupt and differentiated opinion regarding the quality of the other arcs.

I wonder if im going to live to see
Caska regaining her sanity
lol.

One of the greatest manga but FFS stop playing idolmaster and finish it lol.

Guts is
in a terrible state right now, he has one eye and his vision in it seems to be fading, he constantly pushes his body to the limit using the Berserker armour
it's been a long while since I read Berserk so someone correct me on this but
Didn't Puck say the King of Elfheim will only grant them one wish?
If that is the case then
I believe Guts will probably pick himself over Caska, he pretty much HAS to and besides what if Caska likes the way she is now? Guts never considered that.

That, and probably the fact that, when you've been doing the same story for more than 20 years non-stop, you're bound to get fed up with it.

OP, the author of Berserk also did Gigantomachia a fantasy series that he actually completed, being a short series some time last year, give it a read it's fantastic

I read that yesterday and it was pretty good. I liked that the main character used wrestling. You don't see that often in anime/manga. I could have done without the loli girl though...

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing more of it. It felt like a prototype for a larger series.

I got through the Eclipse. Wow, that was pretty fucked up.

The Golden Age was a great arc. I thought the King was a real douche though.

One thing I didn't like was how the manga starts showing a bunch of nudity and graphic sex and
rape, with or without tentacles involved
after awhile. It got a little too pervy for me.

After a while ?

The first 10 panels are Guts
fucking a demon and obliterating her head.

Mmm that is pervy indeed, but there is more to come, my friend!

The manga is a classic example of an author getting bored over time and forgetting what his characters even used to be. Guts is practically a quip machine these days.

It probably doesn't help that he only knocks out a chapter every few months. Miura clearly doesn't give a fuck anymore and neither do I.

Let's not forget all the rape and, more recently, a fixation with little girls. Classy stuff.

That is indeed the proper tone setter for the whole series.

The more i read the first arc the more i like it. I understand how insignificant and small it compares with the other three , but seeing Guts in fully psychopath mode following the trail of his how neck blood is such an appropriate reaction to the events he went through. Reading it with context puts that story in an entire different dimension.

Quip as in accessory ?

(honest english question :) )
