LTTP: Breath of Fire III

"D"

I'm extremely insecure with how much f2p mobile games are encroaching on Nintendo
Loved this game. Ryu's dragon transformations were hella awesome...especially when he's about to begin charging for the transformation and he casually tosses his sword away like "....heh....won't be needing THIS anymore....." Had some great character designs, and the part of the story where
you get separated from Rei and Teepo moved me to find my friends again
. Capcom Capcpom don't make em like they used to.
Or at all, anymore.

My god... This game 💗
My favorite rpg of all time,
a shared honor with suikoden 2

I hate Crapcom for taking this series away from us

when i played it for the first time, i seriously could not get past the cemetery puzzle....

did anyone have a hard time as well ?

I was hoping I'd see Ryu or maybe even Rei show up in a Marvel vs Capcom. And he did.
In card form. Fuck you Capcom. Fuck you.

Loved this one so much. Fantastic jazzy and relaxing ost. Best part for me was the sense of journey. When you finally reach those last couple of areas and discover what's really going on it felt like you had really been through an adventure. Damn charming characters too.

I am so salty that this game is only available on EU PSN far as English releases go >_<.
If this game goes on sale on EU PSN, I'd just blindly buy it, my brother still has his PSP for one.

It IS kinda odd. In NA PSN I think BOF IV is on there but not III

Really? That's terrible :(

One of my favorite RPG. I only have the option of emulation for playing though.

Awesome game, one of the best RPGs ever made. The PS1 brimmed with awesome jRPGs but that was one of the best. The ending is amazing, too.
It's one of the few games where the final boss and ultimate antagonist is actually not a villain at all, but a genuinely good, but misguided, person/entity.

Rei and Teepo <3

Still need to continue my BoF4 playthrough... I lost it a while ago and had to start all over again when my PS3 got the YLOD, even though I had a back-up, because the stupid restore won't recover PS1 saves for some unfathomable reason.... :S and so I never really got far after restarting, sadly.

Breath of Fire III is my favorite, with IV being a close second. The soundtrack is one of the best, and really gives the game a distinct feel. North America should have gotten the PSP BOF III. I ended up having to import it, because Capcom couldn't even put it up as a digital title. I can't see much is holding them back on it.

Peco essentially broke the difficulty with the Master system. Him trained under Fahl, at the front of the Attack Formation, is cruise control until the end.

I might have spent more time on this than any PSX RPG. So good. I made a thread about it years ago too.

It might have been the only RPG I've ever straight up grinded for a weapon before.

Damn you, Goo King Sword!!!
actually, now I can't even remember if I ended up getting one or not. I may have just given up after hours of trying. Don't remember! Damn you, GKS

This game just beats all.

Has one of my favourite video game stories ever. Whenever I replay it I always find myself amazed at how well crafted the ostensibly generic plot and characters were.

Love how Ryu's battle animation goes from him shielding his eyes and waving his sword like a feather duster when he's a rookie, and then later in the game, after a plot twist that required him to stand on his own two feet somewhat, it changes to him attacking while looking straight ahead with a standard slash.

The game doesn't make any big deal about this, it just happens in battles that come after this event. A small thing, but Breath Of Fire III excels at doing these kinds of things, and this - as well as the nature of the story - really fleshes out the characters, and kept me interested in a game with... really horrible random encounter rates and a rather questionable design decision (desert of death).

And Rei is endlessly awesome, as are Balio & Sunder. Great, great game.

Been a while since I sat down and played some Breath of Fire. I actually stopped at BoF IV. I love the first three games. Maybe one day I'll go back and play them again.

There's a PSP remake on PSP in Japan (and Europe?).. that's not playable on Vita!

Oh how I would replay it...

Older games in general were better about subtle conveyances. I miss that.

Yeah I noticed that too. Incredible little detail.

This is a great game and part of a great series up to BFV. Now Crapcom messed it up with that phone game, this news hurt.

This was the first Breath of Fire game I played but the only one of the first four I haven't finished.

It's total bullshit that it's not on PSN and the PSP version only got released in Europe.

I missed the train for BoF, since IV is the only easy one to obtain on PSN, how does it compare? Is it worth it?

Definitely, it's many people's favorite game in the series and it is definitely the most refined. (And it has the badass in my avatar, one of my favorite villains ever)

Momo is still one of my favorite game characters of all time. Nothing but love for BOF3. Wish I could do something to show my interest in repurchasing it

BOF3 and BOF4 were one of my favorite RPG.

For me it was

BOF3 = Star Ocean 2 = FFT > FF7 = BOF4 > everything else in the psn era I didn't finish xenogear since my 2nd disc was all fucked.

I still got the box and CD.

Awesome jrpg with decent challenge.

I remember not liking the story much because there wasn't really much of a villain.

Breath of Fire III is so amazing. Game starts out as orphans/young thieves trying to survive day by day and eventually evolves into a journey to destroy God. BoFIII has one of my favorite childhood-to-adulthood scenarios. The Dragon Gene stuff is still the best dragon transformation system in the series. It also introduced an interesting skill learning system not seen in the previous two games (although was much improved in Breath of Fire IV). Cool and classic characters, great jazzy soundtrack, nice battle animations (again, trumped by BoFIV, but still good for its time), etc. Old school classic.

Loved BOF3, it started a tradition of me getting completely sidetracked by fishing mini games that persists to this day..

Liked BOF4 a lot but never finished it, I felt something die inside me while playing Dragon Quarter...

Dragon Quarter is an amazing game you just can't expect a traditional BoF out of it.

One of my favorite RPGs ever. The soundtrack, the visuals, the sprite work, all amazing.

I've played through this at least a dozen times and I've never gotten the cannons on the Black Ship to work against the Ammonite fight.

One of my favorite parts was the Dolphin. Not because of the translation section (still hilarious) but when the Faeries start yelling at him and you see him get angrier and angrier until "SHADDUP, RUNTS!!".

My most hated part is training Beyd.

I really wish there was a better supply of AP restoring items. I could never use the Kaiser Dragon like I wanted because of it and I had to fish for so many Black Porgies. Ugh.

I might appreciate it more now, but 16-17 year old me when it was released was definitely wanting a traditional BOF. I think it was mostly me being an idiot and not noticing the Dragon Counter until several hours in and realizing I was never going to make it to the end.

Don't worry, you're not the only one, I had the same moment the first time I played it.

All of the BoF games are pretty good, but 2 and 4 take the cake for me. 3 has some awesome transformations, but the artstyle in 4 just wins, plus getting to play as Rei and the person I won't name, is awesome.
