LTTP: Burnout Revenge or "My, this game moves rather briskly!"

They just couldn't make open world work with Burnout, no matter how many navigational clues were thrown at us. Yeh it was cool to find your own shortcuts, but taking a wrong turn and ending up on the traintrack going the opposite direction wasn't a lot of fun.

At least Most Wanted has fixed that with checkpoints.

I don't rate Revenge very highly in my book. In fact, not only would I say it's the most disappointing Burnout game between Takedown and Paradise (never fully played the first two), it's the only game Criterion has ever made that's let me down.

That said, it's high time we got a new Burnout. Whether it's set from the Takedown or Paradise model, I don't know, but I'd love to see that happen.

liked traffic checking, liked the speed and the tracks.

disliked the absence of blue sky.

disliked the new crash junctions.

I still like both burnout 3 and revenge. paradise was not for me

Yeah, played through Revenge again about two months ago (I think exactly after seeing NFS: MW @ E3), and it is fucking amazing. Right up there with Burnout 2 as my favs in the series.
Wasn't so big into Paradise, unfortunately.

Burnout 2 was easily the best Burnout game, since it had the perfect balance between racing and avoiding other cars (ie, trying not to crash). After that, it became more about holding the acceleration down and forcing your way through. I felt it was a breath of fresh air when you finally had an arcade racing game where physical contact was properly penalised. When driving on the wrong side of the road actually felt dangerous.

But that said, Burnout 3 and Revenge were certainly good in their own rights. Shame about the obsession over making every damn game in every series into open world.

Burnout 2 is my favorite still. Though I must say I wanted some way to push opponents' cars around. I bet the devs thought the same and brought it to the extreme in later games.

Really like Revenge.

Really like Dominator for PS2 as well. You couldn't traffic check but you could burnout chain which was awesome!

For me anyways, it's pretty darn amazing (and I say this as someone who played the PS2 version religiously until I got it on XBLMP). Make the plunge.
Thank-you! I'd played Burnout 2 on BC before and while it came close, there were parts that weren't quit 60fps and others (rainy bits) which were at least 25% of that. But if Takedown is as good as you say, then _b

I have a feeling Takedown is 4:3 only on XBL BC.
According to the Wikipedia BC compatibility list, it looks closer to 14:9 w/ VGA (not sure about HDMI) but it seems like it's definitely better than 4:3 :)

So, did they put the servers back up for Takedown and Revenge?

Online is the only portion of these games I will probably play at this point.

360 servers never left. Popped it in about a month ago and had a handful of people playing. Players now though set the servers for mid range vehicles only.

Dont get that last part.

I think they went down in April but EA may have brought them back due to demand.

It is the best NFS ever.

Come on, tell me I'm wrong.

You are wrong.
Most Wanted is the best NFS ever.

Haha im kidding yeah Hot Pursuit as a need for speed game was brilliant, but as a Burnout game no frikken way.

NfS: Hot Pursuit has been the most boring arcade racer I've played this gen. The problem for me was that Criterion didn't inject enough of Burnout into it and the format was just uninspired and dull. It felt like I was playing a spread sheet.

Takedown was the last Burnout game I've played and it was something special. Couldn't get into Paradise or Revenge. Currently I'm playing Driver SF(which is awesome) until I get my hands on Most Wanted in October(which looks sublime).

My favourite burnout game hands down. Finished it on the OG xbox, then bought the 360 version and finished it again. The online was fun as hell back when it came out too.

Vertical takedowns were the business. Revenge>>>>> ALL

Terrible game. Never gonna as amazing as Takedown.

Fixed that for you.

Revenge is bad because traffic check took skill out the window and the crash mode is slooooooooooooooooooooooooow. That leaves? Nothing.

I just wanted Burnout 4: Takedown 2, Criterion... :( Y U RUIN SERIES?!
But Paradise is better than Revenge, so there is a slight silver lining to this downhill slide of the series. :(

Traffic Checking ruins the thrill of the series... but adds its own instant gratification fun.

Shame instant gratification doesn't satisfy as long.

I'd love a patch to paradise, so that when you start a race, it blocks off junctions with trucks with big arrows painted on,pointing which way to go, so it's a simpler more linear race.

I would totally play the shit out of this game if criterion applied such a patch. That and the ability to disable the takedown camera.

As much as I agree that the older burnout games destroy paradise, the menu's in this game annoyed me for some reason. Maybe because of the older menu design which felt far more slow and sluggish than more recent games.

Game is really a blast, but Takedown is indeed a better game. Hopefully Criterion goes back to it's roots and ditches the open world at some point.

Been saying that for years. The racing in BP is just terrible unless you try to memorize every single track and variation. Give me the barriers and let mo go balls to the wall fast!

Burnout Revenge is an amazing game...

But this game, was an absolute masterpiece.

Easily one of the greatest games of last gen.

Translucent barriers would have been enough for me.

See, I just don't understand this and perhaps that's the fact I started with Paradise first before trying out Revenge.

Giant glowing GO-THERE-FOR-THE-LOVE-OF-GOD-YOU-NEED-TO-TURN-NOW! barriers weren't needed for me because after exploring the city on my own and trying out a dozen races or so I did have the paths known well enough and was glad I could take my own routes because they were faster or offered jumps. It wasn't memorising every single track or variation, but just learning a city the same way I would in real life or depending on a navi (flashing street sign on the top left/right or seeing the turn signal). I couldn't tell you street by street the exact path to get to the stadium in Paradise City, but I can easily get there if I'm on the controls without really thinking about it.

I finished Paradise, I finished Revenge and honestly with or without barriers I never lost the sense of speed and constantly went near top speed or boosting all the way once I knew tracks on both unless I screwed up and crash. In fact being left to me I could keep drifts and boosts going far longer than I did in Burnout.
Not to mention with Paradise if I did screw up, I could use another path or jump and get back into the race rather than having to restart or settle for second or third quite easily, though I still did restarts because I always wanted the best times/runs out of compulsion.

Now I've said that, I'm not against them implementing such a feature and would be all for it if it helped get more people to play; I just don't understand how it would actually help be more enjoyable as to me it felt like the same racing experience in both titles if I just followed the given path. It all just seems a bit Mega Man 10 Easy Mode to me. So please, help me to understand and spot what I'm missing.

I think the barriers weren't necessary in BP, I found my way round just fine. The flashing road signs were plenty good enough.

Disagree. That's like saying that weapons ruined Wipeout. They just needed to provide an option to turn it off for the purists.

Burnout Revenge is my favorite Burnout of the games I've played (Takedown, Revenge, Legends, and Paradise) and the traffic checking is a big reason why. I hope that in future Burnout games, Criterion will add an option to turn it on or off.
