So, I never saw this when it first came out, but now it's on Netflix, so I watched it tonight.

What garbage. One of the worst movies I've seen in some time. The premise is kind of intriguing, but what they do with it is just so uninteresting. I really strongly disliked it. Part of it is how most of the movie was spent with Chappie as this ridiculously stereotypical South African "gangsta" type character. Am I supposed to feel sympathetic with these losers or something? Nah. But that's just part of it. Mainly it's just that nothing happens in the entire movie that makes me CARE about anything. It just feels like such wasted potential. What a boring movie.

I really liked District 9. Great movie. Elysium was OK-ish. This was shit. Blomkamp seems to be on a downward spiral.

Oof, if you thought Elysium was "ok" and hated this, I should continue to stay as far as humanly possible from Chappie. I really thought Elysium was garbage.

Actually, I'm not even sure I though Elysium was OK. I know I didn't like that very much either, I just remember not actively disliking it nearly as much as this.

Eh, it was okay.

It had the potential to be a really interesting exploration of the ethics of robotics and ai but instead went for a semi comedic action movie which is a shame. If you go in with expectations set in the right place there's some enjoyment to be found.

It's pretty much Die Antwoord the movie. It's pretty dumb but I thought it was alright for what it was. Didn't go into it expecting anything deep or interesting.

that whateverthefucking music group ruined it

That shit certainly didn't improve anything.

I guess I was still somehow hoping for Blomkamp to be able to recapture what was so great about District 9. But I think I'm now over that fantasy.

Thought the movie was okay. Chappie himself kinda annoyed the hell outta me though. I don't really like Sharto Copley's voice work. Couldn't even feel pity for the robot when I was supposed to because I thought his voice was so annoying.

Yep, he was REALLY annoying. The empathy I guess I was supposed to feel for him never even remotely happened.

I think you're expecting way too much from a sci-fi action movie.

The robot was endearing and the music was made by Han Zimmer (who is Ant-whatever?).

You're also one of those people who hate Boondock Saints and Crank I bet.

"No Fun Allowed!"

But I also say all this with a :p you suck at liking good movies.

Thanks, OP. Until this moment, I had largely forgotten I had ever seen this wreaking, smoldering turd of a movie. Like it was totally purged from my memories.

Until now. Thanks.

Boondocks Saints and Crank were faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better than Chappie

Sure. But District 9 made me care about what was happening. This didn't. On the contrary, this was actively annoying and unlikeable. That's a big difference. I can enjoy a dumb sci-fi action movie, but this one felt like it was trying to be more than that. And HOW it failed.

Don't worry, we can stack a load of PS4's and help you transcend your humanity or some shit

...remember when people were excited that Blomkamp was gonna do an Alien film?

Totally. This movie was sold to me as Die Antwoord The Movie Featuring Cute Robot so I wound up enjoying it. If you go in expecting anything else you're gonna have your hopes dashed.

I did NOT expect anything like that. At all. I expected a somewhat interesting sci-fi flick on the subject of robot consciousness. What I got was trash.

Elysium was horrible. Dude is a one hit wanda

Hmm, maybe it was? I'll admit that I don't really remember much of it. I just don't remember actively disliking it as much as this.

Also, I had no idea those people were from some music group until this thread. I think I've heard the group's name before, but I knew nothing about them. How weird that this was basically a movie about them. Does Blomkamp have a hard-on for them or something?

Think this was the first movie since Sphere that I just couldn't finish; it was so aggressively boring. Die Antwoord are better than this junk.

Glad Fox came to their senses and dropped Blomkamp's Alien fanfic follow-up.

I think Chappie suffers mostly because Blomkamp wrote this as a trilogy. There are aspects of the film which aren't conceptually bad, but it's so poorly executed.

Yeah, I thought the ending seemed to be setting the stage for sequels. I dearly hope there never are any.

This is always the most frustrating way for someone to defend a movie. Just because you have low standards and don't care about filmmaking doesn't make those who don't share your apathy unreasonable. Also Chappie was clearly aiming a bit higher than just a 'sci-fi action movie' but couldn't stick the landing on any of its thematics.

It's a tonal mess of a movie that tried to tackle a lot of different topics but approached each one in the least sophisticated way possible. It also has distracting logic problems and every supporting character is paper thin.

I think Neil Blomkampf should really stop writing his own movies because he's clearly a very talented director, but his last 2 movies have been completely hamstrung by weak writing.

Maybe not horrible in the context of how bad movies can be, but it was pretty damn boring, cliche, and just laced with poor writing that was predictable from every facet.

fantastic movie. loved it and i thought it was easily the best sci-fi movie of that year. liked it more than the other sci-fi movie most people loved (dont remember the name). But hey taste and all that :)

I didn't find Chappie all that terrible. It's not great but a hell of a step up from Elysium.

Yeah, I agree with this.

The last third was mediocre, but I really did enjoy Chappies inception and how it got his head turned.

Elysium was even bigger offender IMO
