LTTP: Child of Light, what a load of

Okay, try this one:

OK, that one to me doesn't just not rhyme at all, it's also the wrong cadence/rhythm for blank rhyme.

Great game, story, characters, music, art. But the rhyming was a huge letdown. So many forced and awkward rhymes. They should have used rhymes more subtly and with less concern to making pairs all the damn time.

Lol, if only I'd acknowledged that exact thing in the OP or something. Oh, wait.

I guess the biggest issue with the shitty writing is how lazy it is. It feels like the writer couldn't really be fucked to craft this stuff properly so we get poorly constructed half-rhymes all over the place and messed up sentence structure to make stuff fit because hey, that's easier than doing it properly, right?

If there was just some consistency it would be okay but there's not. It's a total mess.

Oh, I took that post at face value. I only skimmed the OP for fear of spoilers (it's on my to-play list). No need to get catty there, fella.

I'd take a Child of Light 2 (or something similar) that is decently written without any rhyming with an expanded occuli system, expanded combat (more than 2 combatants), and less playable characters.

The rhyming was also bad in the German version. Other than that, I really enjoyed the gameplay, soundtrack and battle system (play it on hard!)
One of the better games this year.

Haven't finished it yet, but am enjoying it enough. Just wish they weren't so stingy with the occuli.

I got enough in the end so that at least Aurora can be set up okay, but I never felt like I got enough to actually play with the mechanics of it. Definitely Ubisoft trying to get people on Uplay and micro transacting.

Far Cry 3 writer, so no surprises there. The guy has to be the most technically limited writer at Ubisoft, every one of his works seems like a high school project.

The game was really really good. Bought it Day 1 and enjoyed it thoroughlly. I love JRPGs and had not played any Grandia before so the gameplay was really novel for me. But guys, you should make sure that you play it on hard. I always go for Normal but if I had done so here this game is so easy that it would put me to sleep. Even in Hard mode there are very few challenging battles and by the end you are overpowered anyway.

this thread - I dont like a game, so im going to make a thread to justify my decision.

no one cares.

i personally liked it.

Maybe you should read the fucking thread before blundering into it like an idiot?

I've said I like it a few times, I believe, but the writing is dire and really brings it down. With good writing it would have been an 8/10 game, as it is we're pushing 5-6.

Hey, OP.
Just came to update thee.
Long time reader, third time poster.
I kind of think you don't cut the mustard.

Finally beat the game today
And thought you'd like to hear me say:
You make some fairly decent points
But your vitriol has me quite annoyed.

Child of Light, what a game!
The writing, sure it's a bit lame.
But if you're too jaded to love the complete package
Perhaps you're just a bit too brackish.

The look, the feel, the sounds, and music:
None of these deserve an OP abusive.
So for those sitting on the fence,
Just know that this guy lacks... good judgment.

The art and music are fantastic, and the gameplay I found pretty good for the most part, but the over abundance of playable characters in a two character battle system brought it down a tad. Still really enjoyed the game.
I didnt't like that at first either but it grew on me. Switching characters is a free action and most of their skills are necessary during any given boss battles (on Hard at least).

Came to share some thoughts on rhymes
But found I had already posted mine

A necro bump! Can you believe?
Good thing I scrolled through everything

I always assumed the poor rhyming was a translation thing. It didn't bother me as much as it seems to bother a lot of other people.

Gameplay, art style and music were all great. Never had a problem with oculi. By the end of the game I had the Princess stone and tons of the Brilliant stones. Doing the side quests helps a lot, since you usually get oculi as rewards. Halfway through the game, enemies start dropping them as loot pretty regularly.

I like the writting, the sentences are that way on porpouse, I mean even I got what the characters were saying, and I'm not english native speaker, beautiful art style, battles are tedious and boring, build occuli is actually fun, didn't like the igniculus gimmick.

I found the music kinda meh, too repetitive, some themes were catchy and fitting though.

What's up with this "stingy oculi" talk? I was swimming in them by the end of the game and didn't know what to do with them all after outfitting my main few characters with the best-quality ones.

The team that made this was french right?

Does anyone fluent in french know if it was this bad in french, or if it was the localization that goofed it?

I am grateful I am not a native English speaker, so whatever issues there are with the translation didn't bother me. I got what the characters were talking about and that is enough to me.
i loved the soundtrack and arty style and story, are u smoking some weed bro?
So did I. @OP: Try playing Fire Emblem Awakening if you want to know what a shitty writing actually is.

No. 'tis good game, have you no shame.

I loved the music and the visual presentation. The combat was interesting (No background of playing Grandia) and on the harder difficulty, it wasn't a breeze through either. The story arc was decent enough, even if the jump to the final battle came from the left field.

The rhyming was kind cringy for the most part, but there were some real comedy gems hidden within. Opening that one chest in the cellar that you were hired to clear out. It was something along the lines of " What is inside" and a monster jumps out, saying "Homicide." I really laughed at that one.

This game makes me sad because I really wanted to like it more, everything was there for me except for well the combat imo, admittedly I'm not a huge fan of turn based stuff and child of lights system was solid as far as that goes, I'm willing to give it another shot.

I did find some of the ryhming a bit cringeworthy but its not as bad as you make out OP. At least they actually tried to do something a bit different with the narrative. They nailed pretty much everything else about the game, I personally absolutely loved it.

I agree OP. I'm not some knuckle dragging Neanderthal (I wrote a dissertation on post colonial literature and studied modernist poetry! Ooo get me etc) but the writing in this was utterly horrendous.

The verse had no sense of rhythm, cadence or flow. It was incredibly sophomoric and completely hocked up its own backside.

It was a smug little bastard of a game. Hated it!

Oh the gameplay was also shallow and challenge free (even on hard). It was just a bland, bland experience entirely lacking in depth and completely in love with how clever it thought it was.

(Lovely art though)

I enjoyed everything but the rhyming.
Are you contrary folks simply lying?
A might too attached...
The messenger, dispatch!
A knee-jerk reaction most blinding!

It's definitely an easy jrpg-style-combat game. It's nice to recommend to someone who has never played one before, but it's pretty shallow otherwise.

It could use work and the writing made it difficult to follow along at times, but there was some charm to it. Definitely not perfect or outstanding in any sense. I enjoyed the characters however, and seeing them interact with one another with all these different personalities. The art is very nice of course, as is the OST. I found the combat to be pretty simple and it got old as the game progressed. Fusing the oculi was a pain in the ass though, and more trouble than it should have been. That was my least favorite aspect of the game. I played it on the hardest setting which seemed like normal difficulty aside from one or two encounters which tested me.

The rhyming was a little forced sometimes, but the story was still pretty simply, I though, and easy to follow. The rest of the game - OST, gameplay, art design - I really enjoyed. The game was not a big masterpiece, more like the small indie or art house films, you expect nothing from, but still gives you a nice surprising experience.

Boy am I glad I skipped this one having read this thread. Shame, because it looked absolutely stunning visually.

Far more poignant than I, but I agree with this. The writing/rhyming got a little annoying at times but wasn't nearly so bad to ruin the whole thing - which I thought ultimately was pretty great.

FWIW I played on the Vita with the sound turned off half the time, so that may have reduced my annoyance.
