LTTP: DSi content...what should I buy?

I plan on getting Cave Story DSi soon, can't recommend it cause i haven't played it on a handheld yet, but I can suggest it.

G.G series is pretty good, especially the ninja and the super hero one.

One most not leave the house without Paper Airplane and Bird & Beans!

If you haven't, Cave Story is amazing
Shantae, Mighty Flip Champs, and Mighty Milky Way

Do not listen to this man.

Is it worth it (aside from the portability of course) if I already have the WiiWare version?

I have both because I absolutely loved it, and I skew towards portable gaming. If you think you're fine with just that version, well, you're fine!

Aura Aura Climber is pretty well loved here, I don't think it's as good as most people say it is, but it's definately worth it.

Spotto! Is also a pretty fun charming cheap game.

Ignore this dude.

I will not be silenced! WayForward can't design a good game if they're life depended on it. They're decent stuff, but completely overpriced. Not worth the investment at all. Especially Shantae yuck

Cave Story and Shantae are pretty good.

Mighty Milky Way looks good but I've yet to play it.

Since you have a 3DS I'd highly recommend VVVVVV if you haven't played that yet.

I didn't say they weren't overrated (particulary Shantae which is a blatantly unfinished game) but they're still leagues ahead of pretty much everything else on DSiWare.

As for the pricing, Nintendo ultimately dictates the price for DSiWare stuff - there's some give and take, sure, but Nintendo pushes for higher prices and that's generally what they get.

HI have it on Steam...still worth it?

I'm not opposed to double dipping.

Again, no. You're paying more for less content (no level editor and no ability to import stages from the PC version despite Nicalis explicitly stating this would be a feature), and the game locks up if you try to access Flip Mode.

Edit:

Metal Torrent is also a pretty cool shoot 'em up, with both easy and hard mode, with replays and leaderboards shared online.

I know I ask this every time you mention the game, and I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be, but... is this still on track for an AUS/NZ release?

Hey! I'm really hoping to hear back from the Aus ratings board OFLC to see how long it will take them to give it a rating and approve it for release, pretty soon!
I'll chase them up right now actually!!

After getting the rating it should be very easy to release it, as it's exactly the same version as the PAL one, so it shouldn't have to go back thru Nintendo's testing queue (which takes ages :( )

I'll make a note to drop you a PM when I get the rating if you like! :)

One DSiWare game that I absolutely love is Glow Artisan. Unique concept that uses lots of the DSi's features, tons of content, and it doesn't take forever to ramp up like many other puzzle games. That game is the Picross killer as far as I'm concerned.

My favorite DSi games... I recommend playing on the DSi/XL, because they look terrible on the 3DS.

Zelda: Four Swords. It's not great, but it's free. Go. Now.

Pinball Pulse, which I rebought as soon as it was available on the 3DS because it's just that great. One of my favorite virtual tables.

Trajectile is an awesome arcade/puzzle projectile aiming game. It's a bit difficult to explain, but easy to understand. Probably the game I've sunk the most time into.

X-Scape is a great if frustrating Starfox 2-a-like by the guy behind Argonaut.

Picdun is an awesome and long first-person dungeon crawler crossed with an adventure game and Picross. If you like any of these things, buy it.

Spotto! could be better, but for $2 it's a no brainer.

artstyle:Boxlife is the best of all the artstyle downloadables. You will see 2D surface maps of cubes everywhere for weeks after playing it once you get in the zone.

artstyle:Pictobits is very close, though. 8 bit fanservice, awesome music, good mechanics.

artstyle:Digidrive is sort of a one-trick pony, but meditative.

Number Battle is a really excellent puzzle fight game. It's really difficult to explain, but I found it very involving.

Paper Airplane Chase and Birds and Beans (i.e. Pyoro 1 and 2) are as good as ever.

Touch Solitaire is solitaire. They could have done more, but it's worth the $2.

Dark Void Zero is an awesome Turrican-a-like, if terribly short.

Maestro's Green Groove is an excerpt of an unreleased-in-the-US rhythm/platform hybrid with classical music. I really like it.

Mario vs DK Minis March Again is worthwhile if you like Lemmings-type games. No Mario involved.

These are pretty much the only games I've bought that I can recommend without reservation.

Shantae, Mighty Flip Champs, and Mighty Milky Way

Do not listen to this man.
Listen to this man. They're not bad at all, but they're overpriced and overrated. Better value can be found elsewhere.

Games I want to like but just can't get into:
artstyle games I didn't list (aquia is broken, base 10 gets tiresome, precipice is frustratingly slow, zengage is good but just didn't keep my attention)
Aura Aura Climber
Go Go Kokopolo
Link n'Launch (awkward controls and mechanics, just didn't like it)
Glow Artisan
Escapee Go (gets incredibly hard a little more than halfway, maybe worth your $2)
Chronos Twins (screens are too far apart to manage them together for me)
A Kappa's Trail (controls are really touchy and it gets too frustrating late in the game)

Games that suck:
Anything using a camera. Not kidding. Please don't waste your money.

Games I'm embarrassed to admit really enjoying:
Escape Trick: Convenience Store (almost intolerably broken, and yet I full-completed it with both endings and all optional actions)
Robot Rescue (shovelware junk production values, awesome gameplay)
Soul of Darkness (Gameloft Castlevania/God of War ripoff)
SMB Alarm Clock (wake up to the invincibility theme! feel like a loser?/!)

That would be really cool, thanks! Gettings games OFLC-rated is so ridiculously expensive that I was starting to think you weren't gonna bother, especially if the game isn't selling like you'd hoped.

Honestly, if you haven't already paid to have the game rated I wouldn't even bother - AU/NZ guys can buy the game right now on 3DS by switching the region to the UK or a European country, and I'm guessing that's where most of the sales will come from anyway. (I'm just hanging out for a legit Aussie release because I have a bunch of Nintendo Points cards that won't work on anything but the Aussie DSiWare store, but I'm just one dude.)

Must have:
Shantae (Metroid-style sidescroller)
Mario vs DK Minis March Again (action puzzle like Lemmings)
Mighty Flip Champs (action puzzle)
Aura Aura Climber (peg climbing platformer)

Get these after if you want more:
Dark Void Zero (2D action)
10 Second Run (platformer)
Pro Jumper Guilty Gear Tangent (action platformer)

Good with some flaws
Mighty Milky Way (puzzle, may require too much precision sometimes)
A Kappa's Trail (puzzle stylus, if the camera could be moved with the d-pad it would be perfect)

I played almost all of what looks interesting to me, only missing Rabi Laby and that dual-screen platformer whose name I forgot now. Thing is the DSi is full and I don't like removing games. Well I had to move out Soul of Darkness, but the game isn't that good anyway.

I'll try and do it the official way if I can afford it....the reason why I didn't get the Aus rating straight away, was because I had to pay for PEGI / ESRB and then USK ratings at the same time, and actually didn't find out about a seperate AUS rating til it was too late. (doh!!)

I know a lot of people are just going to say ART STYLE SERIES, but let me tell you my favorites:

Aquia - People seemed to pass over this one, but its super good. Really relaxing, I love how the music corresponds with what you do. It also seems to be pretty deep and has unlocks if you're into that.

Box Life - SO GOOD. You build little boxes out of shapes. It doesn't get any better than that. (OK so you kind of have to play it to appreciate it, but just do, believe me.)

Pictobits - The most straightforward and classic of all the art style games, it kinda feels tetris like. Really fun and addictive. The only art style game I obsessively 100%ed.

Other recommendations :

Flip Note Studio - I guess you won't be able to play this? not sure. It's great though.

Mario vs. DK : Minis March Again - Really good, but not a must play if you've played either of the DS games.

Zelda Four Swords - Free Zelda. Thumbs up.

Avoid

Wario Ware. Its bad. Really really bad.
Shantae I thought it was boring, personally.

Games I've heard are good/am interested in but haven't played

Aura-Aura Climber
Link n Launch
A kappas trail
Electroplankton titles
Game & Watch titles

I never understood the adoration for Pictobits. CODE/BASE10 is my favourite Art Style game by far, but it never seems to get a mention.

Like I said, no pressure - if the game's costing you money that you won't get back, cut your losses and start focusing on the next one. I'm sure there's a much more active audience watching and waiting for new 3DS eShop software, so any new game you release should be much easier to hype/promote.

Starship Defense is good.

I have Bookworm installed, just because Bookworm is good.

I didn't say they weren't overrated (particulary Shantae which is a blatantly unfinished game) but they're still leagues ahead of pretty much everything else on DSiWare.

I haven't finished Shantae yet (I need to get around to doing that), but in what sense is it "unfinished"? Does the game abruptly end later, are there bugs, or...?

Seriously, before you pump money into lots of these, try one or two and see if you can take either the ugly resolution artifacts or the tiny touchscreen in 1:1 mode.

If you're not broke and seriously interested in the catalog, it is seriously worth the money to buy a dedicated DSi for them.

I still don't "get" this mindset -- I don't have a problem with DSiWare titles on the 3DS in "stretched" mode. The amount of criticism this gets is baffling -- no, it's not as "crisp" as on a standard DSi unit, but it's not bad. It actually scales fairly well, all things considered. Heck, I don't notice the scaling at all most of the time... and I'm the guy who hates filters with a passion.

Shantae was originally planned as a three-part episodic release, but at some point they decided to only release the one game; they claimed that they packed as much as they could into the final release, but it still feels very much like an episode rather than a complete game.

There are areas and enemies that were shown in screenshots that don't appear, descriptions of items and abilities that aren't there, and compared to the original GBC game there's just less content overall - the environments are bigger but there are less dungeons, less transformations, less abilities, no day/night cycle, no minigames... just less stuff overall. It also ends on a cliffhanger that was clearly intended as a setup for the second episode.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy everything that's there, and even without all this stuff it's better than a lot of retail games, I just wish we'd gotten the full package.

Most people have already mentioned them, but my own picks...

Art Style games, especially Pictobits, Digidrive and Boxlife. Great pick up and play games.
Bird & Beans/Pyoro is an excellent time waster, but if you have WarioWare as an ambassador game, you have a version of this in that. Still, cheap enough that it might be worth it.
Shantae: Riksy's Revenge is a fun, albeit short platformer. If you've played other Wayforward games and didn't like them, it might not be worth the asking price.
Zelda Four Swords Anniversary Edition is definitely best for multiplayer, but it's still a good deal of fun on its own. Plus, it's still free.
Pinball Pulse; Like pinball? Get it. Don't like pinball? Get it.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!; if you like the lemmings-style Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 or Mini-Land Mayhem, this one is decent fun with a fairly robust level editor too. Cheap for the amount of content you're getting too.

My two favorite DSi ware games are AlphaBounce (an arkanoid-type space game) and Fishing Resort (a cute anime-ish fishing game).

I'm actually pretty surprised at the Wayforward dislike in this thread.
Thought I would come back and give more suggestions:
I second Go Go Kokopolo, and for some reason I loved Alphabounce. Also, another vote for Starship Defense.

surprised to not see more Pictobits noms here - wasn't that one loved, if even just for 8-bit fan service? i keep meaning to look up how much they want for it.

SMB Alarm Clock (wake up to the invincibility theme! feel like a loser?/!)

that's pretty cool actually - how much is it? if its more than a dollar i'm just gonna find the .wav and put that on my phone.

Yeah, me too: Mighty Switch Force seems to me a pretty good game so far (and I enjoyed Mighty Flip Champs DX on PSP as well)...

Btw, how do these DSi games work on 3DS screen? Judging by the pictures on the e-Shop they look fine at their actual resolution, but I don't really like those huge borders... Is there any specific 3DS screen option, in order to make them full screen or at least to put a background around the image?
