LTTP: Far Cry 4. Far cry...bore.

So 2 fortresses down and about 25 hours in, I've made a decision to give up on this game. I can't remember the last time I decided to quit playing a game but I'm done here.

This game is honestly everything that's wrong IMO with supposed "AAA" "Open World" experiences. The game is so vast and there are so many systems, side-quests, collectibles etc that it just doesn't come together as an enjoyable whole. The random elements and encounters just don't gel well and actually make the game less enjoyable.

Example: I want to do a story mission and happen to drive by a compound I'd freed up earlier. Surprise! It's under attack. Stop what you're doing and defend it. This happened on a bunch of occasions and it's not enjoyable, it's annoying.

This game is, after not too long, a slog - an energy-sapping, frustrating slog - with generally boring gameplay smoothed slightly by a few redeeming features.

The wildlife, rather than being an enjoyable addition serves simply to frustrate. You can fight 50 men off at an outpost only to be killed by a bloody badger! Every 100 yards someone is crying "EAAGLEE" at the top of their fucking voices and/or being attacked by an Eagle. Eagles are top of the food chain in Kyrat. They attack humans and animals at will with absolutely no hesitation. It's completely fucking stupid. I can understand a bear or tiger being aggressive but a fucking eagle?!?!

What else is stupid is the writing and the characters. The radio station, featuring Billy Ray Rana or whatever the hell his name is, is literally the most juvenile and asinine piece of video game scripting I've encountered in years. I actually want to fight alongside Pagan Min because Rana and the two unlikeable individuals who run the golden path are all way more unlikeable characters than Min himself. They're way too dramatic, way too shouty and just generally unpleasant. I'm guessing the script was written either by the game designers teenage son or an intern on work experience.

The gun play is hit and miss. Sometimes I swear I hit people and they don't react and other times it seems accurate. The healing system is stupid. I've been in a gunfight and I heal myself and see an animation of my character removing a large stick from his forearm. It makes no sense whatsoever. How the fuck did I get a huge twig lodged in my arm? Just stick to the bandaging animation and maybe you'll have more people to concentrate on making the game actually fun to play.

There is some fun to be had. Attacking compounds and coming up with new ways of doing so can be fun. Shooting an elephant in the ass and watching it trample everyone is amusing and an example of a rare occasion where the game's systems gel and make for a fun experience. Vehicles handle reasonably well and the wing-suit is fun to use but overall I think the map is just way too big, too similar and full of places that just aren't that interesting to visit. Even if you want to explore, the game artificially stops you from doing so until you've completed certain main missions. Also, it's way too easy to be killed when heading towards a new point on the map and get thrown waaay back to your last visited safe-house.

Overall, this is just "let's make a really complicated game with tons of content", rather than "Let's make a really fun game set in a cool location". It's like they threw tons of shit at the wall and some of it stuck and quite a lot of it didn't but they went with it anyway. It reeks of design by committee where the committee was the whole development team. Games are supposed to be fun, this quickly becomes the opposite, it becomes a boring slog to finish the game and it's not a journey that I was willing to complete.

Agreed. It's why I have very little enthusiasm for Far Cry 5.

I'm one of those people who loved Far Cry 2 despite its flaws and am hoping for more inspiration from that rather than 3/4.

I absolutely LOVED Far Cry 3 when it came out. Was my GOTY for '12.
After 50+ hours of Far Cry 3, the fourth game felt like an DLC expansion, nothing more.
It plays well, it's a good time killer but other than a new good antogonist it offers nothing more from what Far Cry 3 offered. And i prefer island setting to mountain setting.
It's one of those games which are very decent yet very mediocre.

Agreed, I gave up for similar reasons. I have less gaming time these days and I started it up to play a mission before bed, but on the way to the start point I kept getting attacked by fucking eagles, and being told to hijack trucks, assassinate captains and save hostages over and over. After half an hour I hadn't even started to one mission I wanted to play and just quit and uninstalled it.

Games like this should just have an option to switch off all the side content so you can actually play the main missions without getting constantly harassed about all the mundane side shit going on.

Strangely enough I loved FC3 so not sure if it's just me or if FC4 just turned it up way too much.

I felt the same about it when it first came out - just wasn't ready for another Far Cry.

Came back to it this summer and daaaamn do I love Far Cry games (in moderation).

I hope 5 fixes some mechanical jank leftover from 3. Otherwise, 4 was a fun romp, but definitely not the jump from 2 to 3.

Yeah, didn't enjoy it. FC3 was a much tighter and more refreshing game.

Looks like they're making a lot of good moves with FC5, though!

With FC5, like with all of their core franchises, Ubisoft are making a lot of pretty big changes. It's worth keeping an eye on it. They've improved the recent AC and Watch Dogs games so much, it's insane.

If you think playing primal will be more interesting for the novelty alone, don't.

Primal is such a tepid bore of a game it's shocking they managed to make a game with that setting and that idea and just do absolutely nothing with it.

As time goes by the memories of Far Cry 2 grow fairer and fairer. That game had so many innovations it's amazing how it isn't acknowledged more as a great pioneer of modern open-world game design. Such a powerful and cohesive vision.

Like, I'm playing The Witcher 3 at the moment and can't help but feel the presence of Far Cry 2 in there.

By contrast the later entries in the Far Cry series have very little vision of their own.

They must've gone through some phase where the mandate was just pack everything AND the kitchen sink into every game. The result being incoherent messes of games where systems and sub-systems constantly tread on each others and your enjoyment's toes.

it's a weird game for me... FC3 was one of my favorite games last gen but this one just bored me to tears. i don't think i ever got more than 3 hours in

i mean, i get it, you have a hit, you want to make a relatively quick cross platform sequel.... but it was just so lazily by the numbers. they even had their own bargain bin Vaas thrown in there

a few cool twists... so youre not a white guy in strange land? cool. you're supposed to spread your mothers ashes? well thats cool i guess but why does everybody know who i am right away. why is every single villager rooting me on without knowing me. exactly what side am i fighting for, some hot chick that looks like she belongs nowhere near some remote not-tibet and some dude, beause reasons. yeah i dunno

The best part of the game is actually the secret ending which makes the game end in like 15 minutes. You get shit done without all the needless shit going on there.

Eh, liked it more than 3. Musta been the quasi tibetan setting, far more interesting than fucking Fantasy Island no. 336860

I didn't play 3. But I loved 2 which was my primary reason for getting this. It's not as if the gameplay has even moved on since 2 and in a lot of ways, 2 is a way more coherent, way more enjoyable game, with a lot less annoying side attraction bullshit to get in the way.

It was my first Far Cry game. I enjoyed it for about 60 hours or so, but got tired of the monotony so I never finished it. I am hoping the removal of towers makes FC5 a little more engaging overall.

I loved far cry 4...

Never stoped to help anyone and never gave a shit about the story. Just keep going to the towers and fighting the outposts.... its about the gameplay only.
Forget the npcs. ALL OF THEM

Chlorophyll!? More like Bore-ophyll!

I really thought it was a good game, the gun play is amazing but it's just so similar to Far Cry 3 that it got repetitive fast.

So boring.

I loved FC3 and for some reason hated this. Pushed myself to beat it just recently. Glad I can never think of that game again. I'm pretty done with the FC series.

Far Cry 3 was one of my biggest gaming surprises, but I've found every Far Cry since impenetrable. Just the same thing repackaged again and again in a new setting.

I've only played some of the game so far but I might end up agreeing with the OP in the end. Edit: Let me get my views on FC3 and 4 in better order.

I actually liked Far Cry 3 more, and I think it's because Ubisoft doubled down on that game's features too much for FC4 -- just added more and more until it became cluttered. Bigger outposts, more animal attacks, more enemies showing up, stuff like that. It actually feels like how Assassin's Creed III just added way more of the stuff that was in II until it all felt stale.

Now I'm one of those crazy people who still thinks Far Cry 2 is the best one, but the point here is why: FC2 tried to create emergent gameplay by having a bunch of systems come together in unexpected ways or giving players lots of freedom to play around with those systems. If your weapon exploded or your buddy died, it might suck but you could at least understand why that happened. FC3 and 4 didn't follow up on this and instead just grafted the AC formula onto FC. Despite that, a little bit of the immersive sim sandbox would at times emerge in Far Cry 3.

There is some fun to be had. Attacking compounds and coming up with new ways of doing so can be fun. Shooting an elephant in the ass and watching it trample everyone is amusing and an example of a rare occasion where the game's systems gel and make for a fun experience. The bolded is exactly what I'm talking about. Clearing bases became the most popular aspect of FC3 because it's the one part of the game that feels systemic. Exploring also felt cool when you would come up on bases or random groups of people fighting, often making your own path towards an objective by land, boat, or air. That's still there a little bit in FC4 but now you've got more random animal encounters, more random enemy encounters, and random moments when you have to go back and defend bases. The problem with those is they don't feel systemic or procedural, they just feel random. If enemies or animals show up on the road or you have to defend a base, it's because the game's RNG decided so. Add to that all the usual Ubisoft open-world clutter.

I just hope Far Cry 5 isn't another repeat of this formula. I think MGSV and Breath of the Wild are much better successors to what made Far Cry appealing. Assassin's Creed Origins seems to be trying to learn from those games, but FC5 from what we've seen looks more similar to what Ubisoft was doing before. Maybe it started development earlier.

I lost enthusiasm for Farcry after 3. 3 was fun don't get me wrong but it just felt very by the numbers and 4 looked very similar and then of course Primal which looked like they re-skinned 4. Ubisoft by the numbers is the worst, feels like there is no heart behind it.

I loved far cry 4...

Yes! This is the Far Cry 4 that i enjoyed, opening the entire map and fighting outpost are always my first objectives in Far Cry 4 (and also in Far Cry 3). Hunting is fun as well.

4 didn't grab me at first but I eventually got into it and played through the whole thing. Didn't like it as much as 3 overall but it's a decent iteration on the formula.

Primal is the best game in the series.

Agreed with OP, and, aside from the setting, Far Cry 5 seems the same. Bland gunplay set in a bland world populated with so much inane garbage it seems to be designed for people with ADHD.

I think playing Far Cry 3 made Far Cry 4 a bit of a letdown. I couldn't muster up the attention to finish it, it never really grabbed me like FC3.

Agreed, it gets so boring after like 10 hours. I have 4 story missions left so I'm slowly gonna finish it but the icon infested map and all its repetitive by the numbers shit can go fuck itself The story is dreadful as well and you can't even skip the cutscenes. I actually mute the TV while they are playing.

And does anyone actually like the fucking boring drug trip missions these games are filled with? I just completely zone out during them

Far Cry is the only UbiFormula series I really enjoy from them. I Platinumed 4 and Primal and enjoyed mostly all of doing so.

They have most of the same issues I criticize other Ubi games for, I just like FPSs more than other genres.

Only the "Advanced Chemistry" mission from 4, and mostly because of the Punjabi MC song that plays during it. I hated the Shangri-La parts of 4.

4 is definitely the better 3, but if you played 3 it's not enough. Gave up after 10 hours of the same old.

4 has a few QoL improvements over 3 that made me like it more, but it is pretty much the same game in a new setting, hard to deny that. Primal did more to distinguish itself, but its melee combat was far, far behind the quality of the gunplay from the main series, which was disappointing.

Has OP played Zelda? Reason I ask is because we've seen some fantastic open-world games recently that have changed our expectations of what these games can be.

If memory serves me correctly, Far Cry 4 came out during a time when there wasn't much to play on consoles, so at the time it was pretty damn good. Of course I wouldn't go back and play it today, I'd probably find it pretty shitty --expectations change dramatically with time.

I enjoyed Far Cry 4, but it was also my first Far Cry game. I have a feeling that the series has become very formulaic and would get boring after a while (similar to why I don't play average Assassin's Creed games). That's also why I passed on Far Cry Primal.

I'll be looking at Far Cry 5 review comments about how similar the formula feels before buying.

Yeah, Far Cry 4 was my first Far Cry game. Picked it up used when I got my PS4 in the Spring of 2015 along with Bloodborne and TLoU:R. And yeah, I played it for maybe 6 hours before I got bored and put it down. No bueno. As somebody above already said, it really is Ubisoft game design at its worst.

That said, I'm really intrigued by Far Cry 5 for a handful of reasons including the exclusion of a mini-map or towers, and the setting/theme. But definitely gonna be waiting to read some impressions on here before I dive in.

Far Cry 3 and 4 are tied as some of my favourite games ever made. Never really understood the hate Far Cry 4 got for being more of the same when "the same" was so good in the first place. I really hope another game in the series features Jason or Ajay at some point.

Wanted to get into far cry 4 honestly. The bad guy looked awesome. I just...couldnt even make it past the first 2 hours.

Maybe Ubisoft makes games for less experienced/jaded gamers, kind of like how superhero movies skew young.

I think it's hard to see these things with fresh eyes.

I loved far cry 4. Platinumed it on PS4. But at the same time I completely understand how people could find it to be a slog. I actually had to restart it after walking away from it for almost two years because I had far cry fatigue when I played it the first time. No desire to play primal and I'll play 5 some day.

I got it for PC and once I got lost in a mountain doing some mission I gave up on it. I just didn't care about the plot. I have played and owned every single Far Cry, but I've never finished a Far Cry. The idea is still fun and the level editor was impressive. I just never really cared for the plot.

I met the dude bro they added, the whole protect the fort or surrounding area scenario, and then saw I could do a bunch of stuff here and there.

It takes me back to FC2 and setting grass on fire. Everything starts to become the same thing and the reason to continue disappears.

I have Primal through UPlay. I played for a few hours and then I gave up on it. I don't even know how to say it. I thought it looked good, but something always comes out and replaces it. I haven't really thought back upon the plots. I just remember the main enemy and why they're there in the first place.

Instincts was once praised for its level editor. I'm not sure what to praise what came after.

i loved far cry 3, pretty much everything about it but i hated far cry 4. i finished it out of love for far cry 3 but i hated it til the end.

for me, the story was so bad, boring, bland, forced, and unengaging. it sapped out all of the fun and made it just feel like a typical ubi repetitive objective fest. vaas was a rat bastard and i hated him, the final boss in fc3 wasn't as good but i was so hooked by that point, it didn't matter. plus brody's character and his evolution because just as exciting as vaas. that never happend with the protagonist fc4. the only semi interesting character in fc4 was pagan min (or whatever his name was), but he was barely even involved and felt a bit like they were chasing vaas but going over the top cause they knew everything else in the game was bland. also he might as well of just been the joker, very unoriginal

I played through it for the first time a few months ago and agree 100% with everything you said. Crap game... utter waste of time. To me it felt like a derivative, uninspired, B-movie version of Far Cry 3. It never should have been made.

Primal is even worse. Ubisoft at its worst.

I actually really liked Primal, and in my opinion it should've been Far Cry 4. Although they recycled numerous things from FC3 and 4, it was also very fresh in a number of ways. I especially liked the emphasis on surviving off the environment--everything had to be crafted, even clubs and arrows! I also thought the game was absolutely gorgeous, especially compared to FC4 which underwhelmed me even in that area.
