LTTP: Gran Turismo 5 in 3D. This is awesome!

I can only imagine this. How much more taxing is it on one's system to run games in 3D?

Normally cuts your framerate in half. You're basically rendering two different images so it takes twice the work.

When it works well it's glorious.

I played it on PS3 so...
The console versions of Crysis 2 use a rendering shortcut known as reprojection which allows the game to still run at or near its native resolution without performance hits. Depending on how picky you are about 3D, impressions of the believability of the effect have ranged from ok to absolute shit. Shit because the effect can be subtle to nonexistent, and there tend to be recurring instances of oddly warped shapes.

Nextgen games will have easier job with 3D, becasuse of DX11.1, they will not have to calculate everything twice.

Btw, Jeff Cannata [of TRS and Weekend Confirmed fame] played trough entire Assassins Creed 3 in 3D on X360, and he was amazed how 3D enhanced the game. According to him, there were no frame drops and no reduction of image quality.

Yep, I've played plenty of games in 3D on the PS3 (using the Sony HMZ-T1), and GT5 is probably the most impressive of them. It literally made my jaw drop.

Several customer reviews said this TV died after a few months. Still tempted to pick one up.

I would have actually been more likely to pick one up if best buy hadn't made it a BF deal. Now that they cleared all their stock, the protection plan is basically worthless. They'll just give you your money back if your unit is defective, minus the cost of the protection plan (AFAIK).

On topic, I enjoy 3D sometimes for movies, but I LOVE it for games. I really hope that they extend their 3D push next gen, though at the moment it doesn't look like a sure bet. Sony should come out with a cheaper playstation branded HMZ in the same vein as the playstation 3d display. I would definitely drop a few hundred on that.

3d makes everything better. problem is low resolution, or limited brightness, that hinders 3d ..

yeah I'm seriously bummed it didn't take off as I hoped. Only 2 (or was it 3?) years ago it was hyped as the next big thing in gaming and now it's practicably dead. I vastly would prefer a push for 3D over a push for motion controls. Especially now that there are more options like passive 3D (LG panels) that don't require those expensive uncomfortable glasses.

So what are the games that support 3D on the PS3?

EDIT: Found a list/site with specific 3D scores, dunno how reliable it is though:

I've got a nice Panny plasma, but I bought a cheaper LED for the kids so the can play games on my 60GB launch PS3 and old 360 ( the used to play their games on an old Trinitron, but that one broke down ). Must say that I was blown away...took some getting used to but it's quite awesome to play some games in 3D. The tv is an LG LM620S. Quite happy with the purchase.

3D gaming is amazing. I've got this 47" LG passive screen and playing GT5 in cockpit mode with the weather using a wheel and pedals is just something else.

Other great 3D games are Wipeout, Tumble, Sly Cooper, Killzone 3, Uncharted 3, Child of Eden, ICO and SOTC

I enjoy 3D movies where 3D is done well (Avatar, TRON, Prometheus, Tangled, How to train a dragon, Imax documents like Deep Sea 3D) but after trying out some 3D games I was underwhelmed to say the least - Uncharted 3 and Motorstorm 3D rift were ok, good depth but that was all I expected lot more especially from Killzone 3 (which took a noticeable gfx hit).
Maybe I haven't tried proper games yet - for example Assassin's Creed 3 is total trash in 3D (it's conversion not a true 3D), but I heard good things about Avatar the Game in 3D, might check it out.

I hope Sony pushes 3D further and comes back knocking with PS4 speculated 1080p60 in 3D, I want to believe because that's a potential gamechanger

Eh thats your opinion, but as an owner of 2 3DTV's I can say it has made my viewing experience much better in more cases than not.

Avatar, Brave, Dark Side of the Moon, Tron, Lion King, etc etc etc have all been fantastic on 3D blu ray on my D8000.

Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Crysis, Halo CEA, V2 Sniper, Skyrim, etc etc have also all been beautiful in 3D. Sure in some games you sacrifice some IQ, just as you do in split screen mode for multiplayer or coop. Nature of the beast. On, PC it is much better obviously.

Even with the loss in IQ I would rather play Uncharted 3 in 3D any day of the week for the added immersion. And I'm a huge IQ guy..

I would like to ditto this. I love 3D in games and movies. I just haven't tried 3D in GT5. I have a DFGT and a 3DTV with glasses (active shutter so no resolution loss for me)... but I have yet to try GT5 in 3D!

Yes... I will now bow my head in shame!

It didn't take off because there were too many people in influential statuses/places knocking on 3D. Almost every major critic has a distaste for 3D and so do a lot of old-school movie directors like Spielberg and Nolan. And the endless bitterness and rage from the internet crowd further exacerbated it. Now add the 3D surcharge on top of that at movie theaters. People want technological progress if and only if it doesn't cost them a dime.

Edit 2:
Anyone have a recommendation for a inexpensive DFGT wheel mount? Is DIY the way to go?

Try the latest Motorstorm. I imagine the game looks insane with all the debris that get thrown at you. Plus getting air must be pretty cool in 3d.

This thread made be buy GT5 for my new display also. Cant wait but so far I have been playing Wipeout HD. My goodness, I think I might be a believer of 3D. Holy crap it looks great. Shame I might not keep the display though as I just found great deal on a bigger monitor.

Yeah it's a shame so many are quick to dismiss it as a gimick, it really is something else when you see it in action and I cannot wait to see it on the next round of consoles too.

That is one damn sexy TV.

Thanks, it was an insurance upgrade after some damage to my previous one, so I now have a cheaper 47" 3DTV in the bedroom too!

I llked what I played of AC3 in 3D. Somehow it feels smoother running in 3D than 2D.

Black Ops 2 on the other hand, 5 mins in I was feeling cross-eyed.

Well shit, $99?

I've recently paid £249 for one of the Sony 3D Displays and thought it was a pretty decent price :(

Outstanding picture quality but it's already after only a few days emitting a pretty high-pitch noise constantly when on so will need to go back soon.
GT5, Uncharted 3 and Killzone 3 3D and Simul-view modes have impressed me so far.....

I just bought this TV:

A LG 42 LM860W ... it has 3D and everything.. really good looking and nice TV.

I tried Mortal Kombat, Uncharted 3 and Crysis 2 in 3D.. they all looked OK, but not much more.. It doesn´t really add anything to the games.

which games are the best 3D games (in your opinion) on the PS3..? I have Gran Turismo 5, but haven´t tried it in 3D yet.. and I also have Super Stardust 3D.. any other games..?

Ohhh and the TV has Dual play.. is there a list of Dual play games somewhere..?

Very nice set, mines the 960 and it's stunning! I don't think that there is much difference in the two, possibly the 860 has a slight inner bezel.

The way it does DualPlay isn't the same as the simulplay that the Sony set does. What you basically do is leave the game settings as normal, but start ANY split screen game. You then set the TV to dual play this then splits the screen for you and overlaps both images. Works really well on GT5 with minimal ghosting from the other player.

3d makes everything better.
It really doesn't. I played about 5 minutes each of U3, KZ3 and MS:A before thinking, "yeah, it's kind of 3D, but also kind of blurry, ghosting a little, and running a fair bit worse. Meh, not impressed".

Also, GT5 is a fantastic game when you actually get to play. Unfortunately the front end as a carnival of calamity, and ruins the whole experience for me. I can boot up Forza 4, buy a car, upgrade it, and head out on the race track before I've even got into the showroom on GT5,it's a joke. The menus demand way too much time and patience, I just can't be arsed with it.
