LTTP: Hajime No Ippo, best sports anime ever?

Pardon my math :P. But I agree that they really are different series, however in my opinion I don't think that Ippo would have made the same impact in the late 60s as Ashita no Joe if they released it during that period. It should be noted that Kajiwara also wrote Kyojin no Hoshi, Tiger Mask, and other sports manga/anime during that period as well. Many classics, and Ashita No Joe where very much like other manga during that period; not unlike it. Really, Ippo should be appreciated for its entertainment value not depth, which makes it more appealing to many people. However, with that said the recent Ippo stories are stretching it incredibly thin, not only have they made side stories of every single minor character in the series but now they have Ippo fighting characters named Papaya.

I said other anime, in general, not just sports series although I think Ashita no Joe is far better than similar sports series of the time. When people refer to Joe, they refer to it as a great anime, not just a great sports series and it's compared to anime of various genres. I think that Ippo would have had the same impact but we won't ever know unless set of impossible conditions happen to be met. :lol

Dokaben (ドカベン) and Kyojin no Hoshi (巨人の星) also had the well developed, highly dramatized, and epic battle as Ashita no Joe. Both were published during the same period. Atop that, well developed characters and depth in story existed since the time of Tezuka Osamu and didn't start with Ashita no Joe. Don't get me wrong, I love Ippo, its just that Ashita no Joe has stood the test of time, you can read it today and the impact remains the same. :)

yep, HnI is the best sports anime evar. Major comes close though.

I hope they do a Brian Hawk/Takamaru special.

That's interesting, is sports anime thought of as a subpar genre that can only be compared to other sports anime, or the comparison will come out negative? Like the red-headed stepchild of anime? (This doesn't seem possible to me, since there is no consistently decent genre in anime anyway.) Because having no real reference as far as other sports shows go, I thought Ippo was great on its own right. Hmm.

Personally, I think its the other way around. I think sports manga/anime have a special place in the hearts of Japanese culture. There are a plethora of manga that depict the act of sporting as some sort of ritual in humanity. The "neketssu" that has manifested itself in Kyojin no Hoshi (and repeated in manga since); the strength of will and the soul that can overcome physical deficiencies, and the the ending of Ashita no Joe is known in Japan like the ending of Casa Blanca is in the US. The complex love triangle in "Touch" between the twins Ta-chan and Ka-chan with Minami (and the subsequent death of one of the twins) is a cultural icon. Referred to frequently and parodied in pop culture.

No, sports isn't a subpar genre. It's just that a lot of anime is critiqued within its own respective genre.

I didn't think either of those were as good as Joe myself. Though I think that's because of the content.

I didn't say that other series didn't have well-developed characters or weren't highly dramatized. I said that Joe had a tight story with believeable characters and was culturally resonant with the time frame. Depth != Cultural impact. I don't know where you get the idea that I was saying shows prior to Ashita no Joe were shallow.

Perhaps I misinterpreted, and for that my apologies. However, the themes and impact of Dokaben and Kyojin no Hoshi are equivalent of Ashita no Joe. They are all culturally revered series, and with similar themes. I would arguably even say that Kyojin no Hoshi has had a larger culturally impact then Ashita no Joe being that baseball was culturally more relevant to the public at the time then boxing.

oh and this is certainly the best sports anime I've ever seen/watched. Slam Dunk was good, the prince of tennis was decent havent watched Eyeshield 21 tho and Im problably missing more, but Ippo just incredible and on a whole other level of awesomeness when it comes to sports anime.
Don't bother watching the Eyeshield 21 animé (as it's pretty bad) and go for the manga instead.

By the way, anyone who loves Ippo owes it to themself to seek out any and everything by Mitsuru Adachi. You'll surely love KATSU!

Can somebody tell me where to start on the manga (what chapter) having just finished the Anime?

Volume 35, Round 315.

if you have already seen the movie/specials with Ippo, the only big difference between them is
Mashiba vs Kimura fight special happend before the Movie (Ippo vs Sanada), so the order is different but its not big deal.
