LTTP: ICO

You now what I would have preferred to Ico's combat system?

Chase sequences.

Imagine that instead of having to beat away the shadow guys with a stick, instead, they show up and try and walk slowly towards you and Yorda. In order to get past them, you'd have to do certain puzzles quickly or avoid obstacles while running.

It'd be kinda like the Dahaka scenes in PoP: Warrior Within, except slower paced.

There was one area in the game were running was the best solution by far but there weren't puzzles in the area, just chasing to the door.

You're hired!

No wait, the other one. What a terrible idea.

They sorta do have those already as reaching the exits to a room kills all bad guys. IIRC you don't have to attack an enemy once in the game up until the
Queen

Hey guys i just start playing this game. pretty awesome for a 6 years old game:D

but i have a question: i play this game on my HDTV and i can barely see whats going on the screen :( is there any solution for this? does it damage my HDTV?

thanks in advance

I actually bought a PS2 for ICO. Bought ICO before I even owned a PS2.

It certainly wasn't mind-blowing, but it was pretty good.

You want mind-blowing then go play the latest graphical powerhouse. ICO is food for thought.

Sorry, I don't think it's food for thought, or an amazing expression of whatever, or whatever other contrived crap people come up with. It's a videogame, and I quite enjoyed it.

Graphics aren't the only thing that can blow someone's mind. A book can for godssakes.

This game is pretty much as close as we've gotten to those ideals so far, take it or leave it. May not be your thing, and that's fair, but I doubt very much you could think of more than a handful of titles that are arguably better in this regard.

How can you say that while sporting that avatar...? :(

I liked how Ico did (well, did and/or faked) nearly all the graphical effects that would define the generation - bloom, depth of field, light and water pixel shaders, cloth and water physics - but so subtly and sparingly that no-one really ever noticed.

There's something to be said for ten seconds of incidental animation on a save game couch still being more expressive, naturalistic and meaningful than pretty much every narrative cutscene in videogames to date, too, but it's too depressing.

Holy shit, I just bought Shadow of the Colossus the other day, and my little brother just walked in with a copy of ICO. I was pretty surprised to see it, isn't this game fairly hard to find.

It's impossible to find where I am. :(

ICO's the better execution of those ideas, even though it draws heavily from Eric Chahi's work. Obviously it has the benefit of greatly improved technology, resources and development time, though.

so it doesn't damage the tv,eh?

Why do you keep asking this? Ugly graphics won't kill a TV otherwise my TV would have been destroyed by the WII a long time ago. lol Seriously, unless you do something like force a PAL signal on a NTSC TV, there should be no damage.

Exactly, though you forgot to mention the moment leading up
to the final encounter with the Queen, coincidentally my favorite part of the game. After falling of the bridge, you finally discover a way to get back up to again, yet you find yourself back at the very same location where the game originally started. Not only that, but you practically had to kill Ico's "own kind" in order to save Yorda, a scene which was surprisingly dark and disturbing in a way. The matching ominous music enhanced the overall atmosphere as well, very much so in my opinion.

I almost wish there was a real sequel of this game some day...

Yes, true. Its another very powerfull and "felling guilty" moment.

Agree, it gives you a simiilar feeling to that old classic and actually i remembered it while playing ico.

Btw, i started Colossus yesterday and is looking amazing.

edit: I read elsewhere there are some colossus figurines at play-asia. Are there any Ico related ones?

Just wanted to pop in to say that this game is easily in my top 3 of all-time. Just such a unique, fantastic experience for me when I played it in 2001.

The atmosphere is unparalleled, IMO.
