With Dream Team coming out in a few weeks in the US, I decided to dust off my DS lite and order Superstar Saga off eBay to start the series at the very beginning. And if I'm to be honest, as good as it is, I'm finding it to be as good as it is annoying.
I'm about halfway through (so please use spoiler tags for plot points), and the game is kind of wearing me down. I love the humor, I adore the nonstop Nintendo references (Super Border Jump Sunshine), and the cameos (
), but I find myself getting frustrated with something every hour or so. Some complaints I have:
- Dungeons that consist of rooms connected by hallways, and little in the way of clever puzzling or a sense of place (I'd consider Paper Mario 64/TTYD to have legitimately great dungeons)
- Long enemy attack animations that make battles seem longer than necessary
- The Peach Teehee Valley kidnapping section
- Very little explanation in the way of Advanced Bros attacks - I don't think the game ever explained how to use one at all
- Bosses that heal themselves a bit too often (a pet peeve of mine)
And some other stuff that I've probably lost track of. It's a solid game, but I just can't play for too long at a time. And this might just be me, but it seems a bit on the challenging side, too - there's a lot more trial and error involved than I expected. I hear that Bowser's Inside Story smoothed over a lot of these parts, but was also a less interesting game in a lot of respects.
