lttp: Metal Gear Revengeance

I agree, although I'll also agree they clash with the pacing of a crazy Platinum game a bit. Maybe more for a second playthrough.

To be fair even in the original MGS games listening to every codec pretty much destroys the pace.
Yeah, but that's part of the fun, too. There's sort of a sport in finding the most random and inappropriate times to call someone and see if they have a comment on it. In true Metal Gear fashion, they very often do.

Like, to take an early example, if you call Boris when you're fighting the first Gekko, he'll comment on what a fantastic advertisement this will be for Maverick and Raiden should make this look good. Raiden is not amused. And of course call everyone during boss fights. Especially Doktor.

It's worth mentioning that the soundtrack manages to flesh out the boss characters even more, so even if you think the music is "buttrock" (it isn't) you gotta admit that it's pretty damn clever to give characters depth and motivation through music vocals, each song is from the perspective of the boss you're fighting and that's pretty damn rad.

Very fun action game, extremely overrated generic soundtrack.
Absolute nonsense. Probably one of the greatest soundtracks ever for the way it works in perfect tandem with the action, intensifying through different stages of a battle, for the lyrics that are all about the characters' backstories and motivations and the game's themes, and for how fucking awesome it all sounds if you're into catchy high energy hard rocking music.

Hell yeah.

I legit feel bad for people that can't appreciate the soundtrack. This is a video game-ass video game. It's a celebration of everything that makes this medium great.
Seriously. It's like listening to people go on about how lame the Lord of the Rings movies are. It's genuinely sad that everyone can't connect with these wonderful things.

Rising does do codecs better than most of the Solid series at this point, to be honest. This is MGS1 to 3 class codecs. After MGS3, the codec quality just started falling.

MGR fixes that and goes all out with them again. It's awesome.
Yes the codecs are fantastic. Super interesting and often really funny. One of my favorites is the conversation you get after the helicopter bridge chase in the first mission, where, if you listened to enough prior codecs, Courtney will tease Raiden for going on about his incredible new cyborg body.

Honestly, Platinum just needs to not make the dodge move something you need to buy from an ingame store. I do not blame anyone who quits The Wonderful 101 after having to do the first stage without block or dodge because you have to buy those.

I think it was a mistake in W101, but in MGR if they had the dodge unlocked from the beginning you would just have people spam that instead of ever learn to parry. This way they are forced to learn parry as their only defensive move, instead of just treating it like a god of war style game.

I disagree. It's definitely not the kind of music I listen to regularly but it's used perfectly in the game.

I think this game has a sort of earnestness about it that's pretty rare. It doesn't put on any airs.

God, I need to go through this game again.

Soundtrack, bosses, it's all so over the top and I love it.
I'M FUCKING INVINCIBLE!

Okay, I'm considering playing this on my laptop.

Can I play this in 60 fps? I'm not sure if my laptop can handle it. It's got a 960m.

960m should be plenty. It's not a very demanding game, and it's mostly CPU-bound (particularly when chopping stuff into lots of bits).

It is a last generation game, so you should be fine. There's also options to turn down how many cuts will be rendered and how long they last for, so if your CPU is on the lower end, just turn that down, or be less extreme in how much you cut. While you can turn an enemy cyborg into 200 pieces of former cyborg, you don't have to do it every time, after all.

Glad to see the thread pop up as I just started play this on the PC. I'm at Monsoon and am really have to to learn to parry for this battle. Up until this point it hasnt been much of an issue.

Time to git gud.

BTW, so far I love the Platinum spin on Metal Gear. It works really well.

The soundtrack would be great if there was an option to mute the vocals. I try to listen to Rules of Nature and get pumped... until the shitty singing starts and kills the vibe.

.... You're weird. Each and every boss song has pretty much perfectly fitting vocals.
Glad I'm not only one who thought Sundowner's shit-eating grin was goofy as hell. Dude looks cross-eyed when he does it.
Sundowner is well in touch with his inner child. He says so himself.

When it first came out, as a huge MGS fan, I thought it would be the worst thing to happen to the series... Then the PC version comes out, goes on sale. I give it a shot... Pretty sick!

Meanwhile, MGSV comes out and is actually less entertaining than Rising as an MGS game.

It's a little wacky, but it's fun anyway.

How can that be? I don't like (more accurately, praise) a pretty bland soundtrack.

But heavy guitars, guys! It's so metal and edgy!

Nah fuck all that. It's perfectly paired music with the frenetic action that's taking place on screen and puts you in the experience.

Same with any number of great movie soundtracks from 500 days of summer to the social network. Music that appropriately suits what's happening on screen is a moving experience. Even more so because games are interactive.

Has nothing to do with being edgy metal

Soundtrack is fucking perfectly suited for the game. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but Gaf has already spoken on this one.

Do the codec calls ever end? Breaks immersion.

Also, I bought the defensive upgrade. How do I use it? A+X or is that a different move.

Still getting used to the targeting and camera system.

Codec calls were there to hide load times on consoles. You can skip through, holding B I think?

You're right on the defensive upgrade. Should be a backstep slash type of move that gives you some I frames.

keep your finger on the foward button and just slash the shit out of everything. You will autoparry almost everything, even on higher difficulties.

No it doesn't work that way, the left stick must be centered back after every parry attempt, every time you want to parry, you need to do the "push left stick+attack" once.
