LTTP: Metro 2033 | Wow, this sucks

UPDATE: For any newcomers to the thread, I'm enjoying the game more now. But man, the start of it is rough, and really gave me the wrong impression.

Just bought Metro Redux in the 70% PSN sale, because I had heard a lot of good things (mainly from GAF) and have gotten started a bit on 2033. And yeeeeeah, this is not a good game. The story and atmosphere is pretty cool, which is why I'm still playing, but the gameplay is honestly garbage. Hits have no impact, I can hardly tell when I've shot one of these werewolf mutant things enough to make it dead, enemy AI feels cheap, and most combat feels frustrating more than anything else.

I'm now stuck waiting for some damn gate to open with Bourbon, while these fuckers come swarming in, and I'm just dying over and over. Even lowered the difficulty (I started on Hardcore, since I enjoy a challenge if it's a fair one). There's also some damn annoying bug where my guy keeps automatically switching to the portable charger right in the middle of the fight, which is not making things any easier. I KNOW I'm not pressing the button combo for it. Very, very annoying.

I'm not really a big FPS guy so maybe I was dumb to even pick this up. But I do love the Half-Lifes and such, so I thought maybe this could be something for me anyway. So far it's not.

Does it get better with Last Light?

Last Light is a lot better. There's too many boring encounters with monsters in 2033 but you fight mainly Reich and Red Army in LL and they are a lot more fun to fight.

Dude game isn't hard at all, have you not played an FPS before?

More frustrating than hard, I'd say. The gunplay just doesn't feel good at all. But this current section I'm on I think IS rather difficult. Swarm of enemies that kill me in a few hits if I let them get close, I have to constantly reload, my guy keeps bringing out the portable charger in the middle of me shooting stuff (why does this happen?), etc.

Last light is great, but metro 2033 has some problems in terms of gameplay and with its story/characters

I don't think the game is that difficult but metro ( especially the originally version) has some bugs and random difficult spikes, quite Euro janky

If it gets to much you can just skip to last light. Barely any missing story

I pretty much went through both games with only a few kills. So yea the game is great. I think you need to adjust.

I beat the OG metro 2033. This month I beat both reduxs.

Also see if you can use KBM on this game on PS, that may be a better experience.

Yeah I played it for a bit but when the first major combat encounter ended I just realised how unenjoyable the gunplay was, didn't touch it again.

Eh, can't really agree with this OP. Wanna elaborate on why you think the gameplay feels bad? Like, you say the shooting feels weak, but in what way? That was not my experience at all.

10/10 atmosphere
5/10 gameplay / gunplay

Last Light isn't much better tbh. If they could make the gunplay feel more punchy then they'd have a great game on their hands.

Don't agree. I really enjoyed the first Metro 2033. Loved the atmosphere, and I enjoyed fighting the mutant freaks. The game also looked incredible on PC when I played it too. Metro 2033 was one of my most used benchmark games at the time.

i never play / suck at first-person shooters, but i've still thoroughly enjoyed 2 series: bioshock, & metro. not really sure what your problem could be, other than maybe turn down the difficulty? - i was just blown away by everything about both metro games :) ...

Hits have no impact, I can hardly tell when I've shot one of these werewolf mutant things enough to make it dead

It's supposed to be that way, the book the game is based on very clearly expresses that the mutants don't show any reactions to getting hit by bulllets

Thought 2033 (Redux) was better than last light. Better story and much better and impactful ending level

I recently played both of the Redux versions and this was ultimately how I felt as well. Last Light is still great and is probably a more solid game mechanically but the story and atmosphere made 2033 more enjoyable overall.

This clearly is not the game for you. Overall census says you are wrong, but I think you dial it back to easy or just move on to another game. Metro 2033 is fantastic game and Last Light will pretty much be the same fare.

Are you playing the original or the Redux version? I found the core gameplay to be much better in the Redux one.

Huh, ok. Well, I guess that "makes sense" in that case, but to someone like me who hasn't read the book it just feels like poorly made gameplay.

The game is pretty easy to be honest. And you're playing redux which has improved combat. The original 2033 could be tricky in places but the revamped versions, last light redux too, have pretty solid combat mechanics.

I felt like all the enemies, monster and human, had pretty decent reactions to gunfire too. Maybe it's just not the kinda FPS for you. It's definitely not as straight forward as some others.

Are you playing it in ranger or soldier mode?

If you dislike the gameplay, read the original novel.
This.

Novel explains that there are military grade ammo used for trading in lieu of money and the various Metro factions in warfare and the home made variety which are rubbish but plentiful.

From memory, there is a two tier ammunition system (as in bullets) in 2033 but 4A Games don't really explain the concept very well. This is why you hunt for military grade ammo in bunks and rail platforms etc throughout the game.

Best weapon fires ball bearings which is very useful if your playing in Hardcore Survival mode.

This guide might help too: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=815825092

HE KEEPS BRINGING OUT THE PORTABLE CHARGER RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF ME TRYING TO SHOOT THESE ASSHOLES! I'm NOT pressing the button combo for it. Seems to happen after I use melee attack. Surely this isn't supposed to happen, and the game is just a buggy mess?

Both games are fairly janky with bad to mediocre gameplay and mechanics. They arent difficult tho. I havent played them on consoles however

Try turning off your headlamp off. Maybe you're getting low on power if you've had it on the whole time. Also, I usually have it off most of the time when I'm sneaking around.

I never finished 2033, but I really, really like Last Light.

edit: I know the original release was really, really buggy, but I don't think that was the case for the redux version.

To be honest I didn't like 2033 a lot either, despite loving the atmosphere and overall concept (linear narrative driven fps, a journey trough an extremely harsh world). I have yet to check out Last Light but 2033 soured me a bit. And I played it on PC (steam) and then later tried again on PS4. The gameplay of 2033 just feels impactless and the leveldesign and some of the enemies just annoyed me at times.

I don't understand how that's possible. Maybe with the human enemies, but I've already been in a whole bunch of forced monster encounters. Don't know what to do but kill them...?

The above applies to this as well.

There are a few unavoidable encounters but from what I remember you can sneak by most of the enemies, humans and mutant monsters alike. For a type of later enemies it is better to avoid the fight with.

Can't help with the bug though. Did play on PC and it didn't occur there.

You say you're not much of an fps type of guy and then you go for the hardcore setting on a particularly hardcore, and extremely unforgiving and immersive, fps and then you come to gaf to call it a bad game when you're simply bad at it.

The game is masterfully crafted and the difficulty fair. I'm also not much of an FPS guy and I beat the game on hardcore on my first and second play throughs with little difficulty. You just have to approach situations logically and intelligently. Sorry to regurgitate this overused gaming jargon OP but I've never seen it fit a particular situation more than this very moment: git gud.

Ranger mode in Redux with limited HUD is the only way to play.

This guys knows what's good.

Oh come on. I know shitting on games is cool on neogaf, but the Metro games are both perfectly good games I would even call them great. I played the first about 4 times from start to finish and the second one only once... both are great FPS games worth playing.

Ah, right, thanks for reminding me. Finally completed this encounter after switching to the good bullets that make enemies catch on fire. You're right, the game does a terrible job explaining how this works. It's just mentioned like once, and not really expanded upon in any way. And the way you do it, holding Triangle and pressing R1, is just... what. It doesn't make sense, maybe because the Triangle menu is never explained. And now I also don't know how to switch back to regular bullet in order to not waste all the good ones. Literally no idea.

I play that shit on Ranger dude, git gud

Also, it's a real survival game, it's not gonna play like HL2 or CoD

I'm with you OP, I started 2033 redux this steam sales and it feels very eurojank. Like you said the monsters have no hit reactions at all (and no "but that's how they are in the lore" doesn't make the gunplay feel any better magically). I might give a shot at Last light, seems like it's better according to this thread?

Try turning off your headlamp off. Maybe you're getting low on power if you've had it on the whole time. Also, I usually have it off most of the time when I'm sneaking around.

Pretty sure it's just supposed to warn about the battery level, not automatically bring out the charger resulting in your death (since you then can't shoot until you switch back). That bug better not keep happening, or it's gonna make this impossible to play.

Yes, I did initially go for hardcore difficulty, because I love a fair challenge, and was hoping this would have that. But they're is no way to approach forced combat against a stream of mutants "intelligently". This was literally just a square space in which I had to kill all that kept coming. Just hoping most of the game isn't like that.

And me not being all that big on FPS doesn't necessarily mean I'm crap at them. I've played and enjoyed several, I just stay away from your typical CODs and all that.

Just in this thread there are several examples of people agreeing with me about the bad gameplay.

Did not like the game on the 360, got the redux version on PC and loved it for some reason, everything just clicked with me. Great game, give it a chance.

I understand that, and that's partly why it enticed me (typical COD stuff doesn't interest me at all), but I don't understand how I can "survival" my way out of a forced encounter with 20 mutants in an empty square space.

I didn't like Ike it on 360, but tried again on PS4 and loved it. The Library is so good. So immersive, I kinda just got over the feel of the gunplay (kinda like bioshock lol). Good thing the sequel has tighter mechanics.

Just in this thread there are several examples of people agreeing with me about the bad gameplay.

And in this very thread there also many more posts disagreeing with the notion. We call that cherry picking my friend, but hey you know what they say about opinions.

Look I understand dude, and that's one of the most boring parts in the game if I'm being honest. If I remember correctly there's not another part exactly like that in the rest of the game, so if you stick with it after this you'll find that it's a great game, particularly some of the end game stealth-able sections. That's when the game really starts to shine, and the ending you get will tell you a bit about how you played the game as well. It's a wonderful game, and I implore you to keep going if you beat that part, it's all better from there. Good luck to ya.

The game forces you to figure some things out on your own.

As it should. 😊

It should not force me to figure out basic gameplay stuff like how to switch back to regular ammo. Can you not do this? If so, why?

Fake edit: Now it suddenly allowed me to do it with Triangle + R1. I SWEAR this wasn't working a few minutes ago. Another bug I guess.

I partially agree with OP but at the same time the damn game can be incredible at times. The
library or museum, not too sure rn
level is what ultimately convinced me to finish it.
