LTTP: Persona 4 Golden

I was very concerned going into this one that having viewed the Anime first would have ruined the experience for me. To my great relief, that doesn't appear to be the case. This game is awesome.

Visually it's good, nothing extraordinary seeing as it's a PS2 port but nonetheless, the OLED screen makes it look awesome, especially the battles. The enemy designs are really creative in true Atlus fashion. The story is still awesome even for me, as it's obvious the anime cut out A LOT of material.

Controls are solid, battle system is well thought out if not a bit simplistic. My only concern right now is the Social Links. I understand how they work, but right now, I'm anxious about skipping days and missing any key moments to start off a social link. For example Chie. I can't fucking find her. I know she appears on the roof of the school and in the store district on certain days but when I've checked on those days, she isn't there. Am I missing something? I feel like it would help if the game notified you a bit clearer about when and where you can initiate these things. They do so with job and club opportunities.

That's literally my only small gripe. The game is amazing so far and I haven't even scratched the surface.

Ugh this game was just TOO ANIME. Couldn't take it or the highschool setting. Ugh, so gross. College would've been so much better.

EDIT: Apologies, this is actually one of my favourite games of all time. ;)

Rise Naoto da waifu.

I know posting can be hard, so I thought I'd help you out by fixing your post for accuracy.

OP, it's an awesome game. I'm at like 85 hours and still not completely finished. I think I lost my chance at the "true ending" unfortunately. I'm not into anime in any way and I love it.

care to explain how the 3ds would have improved it? i dont see a different console fixing what was for you a bad setting.

Glad you are liking it. P4G is really solid all around.

As for the issue with Social Links, some people will flat out not be available on certain days. My personal preference is to try and focus leveling up your party's social links since there are some good things you can get once they reach certain ranks.

Knowing what to do is also the hardest thing in the game unless you're following a guide. I'd say go with the flow, make sure to get some time in the dungeons, and work on your other skills as well, since they will unlock more social links.

Dude ... no. The graphical design aspect of the game just pops on the Vita. I love my 3DS ... but no. In fact I am usually the other way around, I wish most games on the 3DS I played had a version for the Vita.

Don't sweat social links. You'll need two playthroughs to see them all anyway. Just focus on your party members and Dojimas, then everyone else is a bonus.

I just started this game about 3 days ago and I have already put in 14 hours. I love it. however I was spoiled to who is responsible for the murders. I hope I can still enjoy it as much I have felt my need to know more diminish a little with that knowledge.

Can't say I agree with any of that. Platform doesn't really matter at all as it's a port of a PS2 game and 3D wouldn't improve it much and the highschool setting doesn't matter as you would probably end up with the same format and plot points in a college setting and highschool doesn't make the murder mystery any less dark.

The game is pretty damn anime though but that doesn't really mean much.

By making it like P3P? No thanks, I want to walk around the town/school. Downgrading the graphics to chibis like they're doing to that new one would just turn me off even more(I'm still getting that spinoff though).

But yeah, the game is great. Also, it's recommended to beat the dungeons as soon as you can so you can have access to your party members' social links. But since this is your first play through, just play to enjoy the game. Don't rush it and just take your time.

So begins the cycle of every Persona thread:

Japanese college is nothing like American college, "Persona" has always been the 'young persons' megaten label.

Give it enough time, Atlus will port their titles to every system imaginable, including Ouya and FM Towns Marty.

I just finished this after 67 hours on normal. It's now my #2 JRPG of all time.

Also, Yukiko waifu, come on, nerds.

I haven't had a chance to play Golden, I enjoyed my time with P4 and I hope you too... kinda sad to hear you watched the anime, which was horrible.

Sadly one of the reasons I never really got into P3P. I picked it up on PSP before Vita came out, played around with it for a few hours but never fell fully into it.

Meanwhile, I tried P4G on Vita the day it launched and it wouldn't let go of me until I was finished it about 85 hours later. So I decided to get back into P3P after that and... meh, that extra lack of immersion still kills it for me. Would I be better off trying P3FES on PS2?

Woah don't ever skip days!
But you can use that feature they added to the Vita to see what everyone else did that day. If one of the bubbles said "hung out with Chie" or whatever, then she should be around somewhere.

I've seen that only once, and I didn't look at the speech bubbles until after I had returned home in the evening :( I was gutted.

I'm on my Newgame+ after completing it last week for the first time, I loved it. Had a Harem of all the possible girls except Marie and Naoto due to lack of time management, ended up choosing Yukiko for events, never ran into any trouble somehow.

Now that I'm on NG+ I'm getting through it pretty easily and managing my time really well to get all the social links and trophies, I want this to be the first game I platinum.

Great game, easily my favourite RPG from its generation and the extras included with The Golden make a great game even better. My only complaint is that despite the new dungeons being more varied than Tartarus they're still generic as hell and pretty boring to slog through.

College Persona would actually be awesome.

Though the only game I physically could not play because it was too 'anime' was Disgaea. That shit is disgusting.

You got like six replies that took you seriously. I'm surprised Levito, I really am. But anyways, Persona 4 Golden, best JRPG on the Vita, best JRPG on the PS2, possibly best JRPG ever. Stay away from Persona 3 Portable if the presentation was a big attraction to you, OP.

Oh yeah, that will feature will be your best friend in getting the most from your social links. Check it pretty much every day after school or when it's available as it's a good guide without cheating with a guide.

And as above, do something every day.

You can actually max out the social links on a single play-through but the only way you'll perform such a feat is by both following a FAQ and having the patience to save/reload, save/reload to get great blessings from the fortune shrine.

One tip on social links to the OP - make sure to have a persona in your inventory (doesn't have to be presently equipped) of the same arcana as the social link you're working on. You get slight affection point bonuses answering questions during social link interactions that way.

Also - while I didn't use a FAQ to decide which links to level and when, I absolutely used a FAQ to know what answers would grant the most affection points. Same for the random questions in class and the exams. Those are the kinds of things that aren't spoilers but can make things go a little better for you, especially considering the tight scheduling the game places on ya.

Also - try to save going into the TV for a rainy day, and only go once per month/cycle. Make sure you clear everything that one time so you don't have to waste extra days going in to the TV.

I don't want to say too much else for fear of spoiling something.

I'm just starting my second play-through on newgame+.

Pfft, my Yu has gone through the whole game breaking hearts. Gets basically everyone to start to fall in love with him, then pulls away. Not interested in romance, sorry everyone in the whole damn region!

I like to imagine he's just really focused on his schooling and doesn't have time. And solving heinous supernatural serial killing sprees is basically a full time job.

I got 25 hours into it and am probably going to give up- the dungeon I am in keeps kicking my ass every level and I really don't want to bother grinding. Shame because I really want to see how it ends.
