LTTP: Resident Evil 2 (Dreamcast)

Cool.

My DC looks great on my 50" except my TV has GREY bars in 4:3 mode. :( so distracting.
I was stuck with that too on my Panasonic plasma for awhile too, then, a few months after I got it, I just decided to look harder in the menu options (lol) and found an option to darken the bars to a black.

Is it possible such an option is buried in your tv's advanced display settings too?

I can't believe how fast I am flying through this so far, no real sticking points.

Uploading some gameplay now for you guys interested in how it looks through VGA on a 46" LCD.
looking forward to this

The best Resident Evil in PS1 era.... the atmosphere, characters, levels and story plus the music ( save room ;_; ) were all perfect!

I would pay so much money for new RE as powerful as 2, but I know this would never happen :(

oh Resident Evil you once were so amazing and epic and non action.....

Man the inventory management system is still a pain, I don't know how people have the patience to play with Leon.

Anyways, still making good progress, have all 3 pieces for the chief's office and just opened up another huge area.

I find Claire to have the more painful inventory, where as Leon's is streamlined. Leon really only uses three guns; handgun, shotgun and magnum. By midway through the game, you can dump the handgun altogether and go shotgun/magnum only. Claire's grenade launcher having three types of ammo always gets on my nerves when trying to sort the inventory as I usually try and carry one type of ammo loaded into the launcer and another type spare, and I always run into the one type of ammo I'm not carrying with no inventory slots. The bowgun is awful too, same for the dual slot spark gun. Thankfully, you can easily play through either of Claire's scenarios using just the pistol, sub-machine gun and grenade launcher.

Yes, Leon is definitely superior when it comes to inventory. Not only does leon have to deal with less weaponry, but his exclusives are upgraded versions of the three main guns, whereas Claire is stuck with the same old launcher, bow gun, etc.

To the person you quoted, I'm pretty sure Leon and Claire have equal slots as well.

Should be able to catch up to where I was in 60-90 minutes. Really is worth it to have his guns, I think I was thinking of RE 1 where Jill had more inventory slots than Chris...

I never played it on PSX and I remember getting it for the DC after I completed Code Veronica as I wanted to complete them all. I got this and Resident Evil 3 together.

At the time I always thought the graphics sucked but I guess that was cause code veronica looked so nice. Also RE2 was way too easy!

I as much as I love RE2 and have played it to death I always have to resist the urge to buy a dreamcast and this one game, that I own several copies of already, just to try the HARD mode out.

Thanks but I'm from Austria, over here they're rare and pretty expensive.

I could buy one via ebay from Hong Kong..not sure if I wann do that.
Ahhhhh, gotcha. I personally ordered mine from eBay, and got some funky Hong Kong item that's basically the same as the one racketboy was selling(they were out of stock at the time) and the quality has been great.

I cant speak for everyone but the image quality definitely beats out the PS3 on my tv. Something about the way my tv handles and scales/overscans video from hdmi leads it to look far less crisp than video via vga.

I think it's half ammo pickups and less herbs around, someone correct me.

WHAT THE FUCK.

Seriously, you're playing on "Baby's First Survival Horror" mode! YOU DON'T NEED THE FLIPPING SHOTGUN! YOU DON'T EVEN NEED THE FLIPPING SHOTGUN IN NORMAL! *slow descent into madness*

Seriously!
IT ONLY IS 8 EXTRA ROUNDS!
Unless you really like to R1+Up Zombies, it isn't worth the ammo or health expense.

Pretty sure RE2 DC's considered the definitive version. The GC version was a port of it.

AFAIK, it (GC port) isn't. But I could be wrong. I know the GC port felt like PSX FMV's + Dual Shock version extras after having the non-DS Biohazard 2 for YEARS.

eh, dunno about that. i don't believe they were down graded in any way. they just weren't comaprable to other PC titles at the same time.

And that's why they're "Meh" ports. Same with MGS's PC port: Not a bad port, but now a days it isn't great. And it wasn't too great at the time either.

Pretty much just ordered a VGA box (along with VGA cable + that shit), and Resi 2. I've been looking for a reason to come back to the DC, and now I've found the answer with Resi 2 and DC on the telly.

You are just more hardcore than I am, and clearly have more experience with the series.

Defiantly in uncharted territory here. It is really amazing how much easier this game is 10 years later. The puzzles, the enemies, everything. This may be in my top 10 of all time when I finish it.

The CGI still looks decent:

And I had no idea who Aida Wong was:

it was pretty awesome when she just threw the Doctor over the railing!

Some great scenes in the last hour or so, especially
when the alligator attacks you and luckily I saw the gas tank a moment before. The way to defeat him made complete sense and I was able to do it the first try!

So I just took the air tram and am in another area, back to it! Then to Resident Evil 3: Nemesis...

Any good 3rd party controllers I can get for my dreamcast so I can play this? Playing through JSR reminded me how much the 1st party controller hurt my hands.

Only third party controllers I've ever come across is the astro pad which I have the misfortune of owning. It's the same basic shape just... very low quality and the analog stick doesn't have any kind of limit to how much it spins which just makes it awkward rather than ergonomic.

stealth edit: juts picked it up again for comparison and it's sort of built a bit wider so it's on the whole a lot less cramped and the triggers are more comfortably placed. If it's the tight placement and the inward directions that you need to place your hands on the beast that are causing the discomfort then I'd say give the astro pad a shot despite feeling a bit shoddy, you might find it more comfy.

Out of interest, which version of Nemesis will you be playing? And are you going to do a Claire B run before you move on? Because the B run is amazing when played straight after A, even more so if you haven't done it before. Having the alternative perspective really brings the game to a whole other level.

I love how much grander Resident Evil 2 feels in comparison to the first. It really was like the huge blockbuster sequel. Everything gets ramped up and it feels very much like an action movie at times.

I dream of Kamiya making another classic survival horror. I know that his idea for Resident Evil 4 became Devil May Cry, so he probably wanted to get away from the formula even then, but he and Mikami's directed games in this series are amongst my favourite games ever. This, Resident Evil, it's REmake and Resident Evil 4 are all masterpieces.

I have a folder with all the pre-rendered backgrounds from the game, and sometimes I look through them and reminisce about the events in each location like it's some sort of morbid family album. That's how much I love this game, and that's also how nerdy and sad I am.

Dreamcast version of RE3: Nemesis.

For the Claire's B quest, tt depends on how much I enjoy the last few hours, most likely since I was already 3ish hours in on her quest.

Game update: I am in the underground Umbrella facility now, such a cool environment change!

I find myself partial to the GameCube version for skippable cutscenes alone. Any version will do these days though.

I will say that the whole RE podcast you and the 8-4 guys are suppose to do is part of me finally playing through these.

You are just more hardcore than I am, and clearly have more experience with the series.

Thing is main part of the fun of the old RE's is the fear of dying and limited ammo/herbs.

Nothing as awesome as being fucked up badly having almost no ammo left and having to escape some zombie trying to kill you, that is what SURVIVAL horror should be about. Not having nearly unlimited ammo, being able to save whenever you want and all that pussy ass shit.

I am by no means a hardcore gamer and get easily frustrated with unfair games but never had any problem with any RE.

You're basically cheating yourself out of the main reason some people love the old Resident Evil games.

This thread reminded me I have the Gamecube version of this game, time to play it on dolphin! On second thought the pre-rendered backgrounds will look awful in 1080p lol, guess there's only one way to find out.

So what's the verdict? I have the Cube versions of RE2 and 3. Is it worth hunting down the DC versions? Which are better? I do like the idea of VGA!

To be clear on the B scenario, it changes up a ton of stuff you saw from Scenario A, you see a ton more areas, and it really works around the A playthrough and gives a more definite end to the game.

It really depends on how much you're going to play it. The game looks better on the Dreamcast and there are plenty of extras, but if you're not going to play with those then you may just be better sticking with the Cube version. If you can get the DC versions and like RE2/3, then by all means go ahead. It's definitly the superior version of the two.

As for RE3, the Dreamcast has two extra costumes, you can pick your costume from the start and play the Mercs minigame from the start. The Gamecube version is a straight port of the PSX original, so you can only wear costumes as you unlock them with game replays and you can't play Mercs until you finish the game. I haven't played it though, so I can't speak on the graphics quality. The DC version was sharp and clean, though.

I realized that you are right as I am getting towards the end of the game and I haven't died once or found a ton of challenge, I will play on Normal when I restart Claire's quest.

From playing the first 4 hours of her quest already I can definitely tell. Different puzzles and people you meet (like the little girl who thinks the best plan when there are zombies around you is to run away from the person with a gun...).

There are the differences between Claire and Leon's scenarios, but even comparing Leon A to Leon B or Claire A to Claire B, there are significant differences and even more unseen areas.

You played Claire A, IIRC. You really should play Claire B. It adds in another perspective to the Leon A scenario.

And since you're playing on BFSH mode, you pretty much can breeze through it. IIRC Claire B is kinda rough due to Claire's non-one man Army ability in terms of weapons and some boss changes.

Still doable and it's much shorter (unless exploring everywhere) than the A scenarios of both characters.

Also while in Leon A, make sure you put your fingerprints in the Umbrella computer and then go to the locked lab on the other side of the "first floor" of the Umbrella lab and put Leon's hand on the scanner there. It'll
NOT
pay off in Scenario B.

Alright I am convinced, maybe after I play through RE3 and CV.

CV comes after 3 right? For some reason I am thinking that it comes in between 2 and 3.

It's a side-story
and one that kinda fucked the rest of the series
, play it whenever. But it's not as good as the others in the sereies, yes: Even 4.

(In before Code Veronica Defense Force. It sucks and has a shitty antagonist. dealwithit.gif)
