LTTP: Resident Evil 4 - This game is amazing

By the demo, yeah, look like a perfect evolution. I hope that the final does justice too.

So if Alone in the Dark or Deep Fear (Saturn) has, I don't know, Barry as a playable character and all other stuff that you mentioned, it was a Resident Evil game? Please...

Well... the original Alone in the Dark was the original inspiration for the original Resident Evil so...

Maybe some people don't like the evolution of certain titles in their beloved fanchises, people also saying God of War 4 "is not a God of War" because camera, weapons, child, mythology, etc.

Extreme "Purism" is a problem in itself. In my opinion, devs and publishers need to take more risks, not less.

What weapons did you use in the game, OP? Did you have any favorite one(s)?
I used the Red9 w/ stock, bolt-action rifle and shotgun/striker. I think the Red9 is just really cool-looking. The only reason I didn't switch to the semi-auto rifle is cause I had already upgraded the regular rifle by the time it became available, but I feel like my choice was redeemed somewhat when I killed
Salazar
in like 30 seconds or something. I bought the TMP at first but sold it later cause I wasn't really feeling it. I also used the free broken butterfly a tiny bit but never upgraded it.

Village: incredible.

Castle: great.

Island: eh.
I always stop playing at the island when I replay this game. It gets better a good ways in, but the first part with all the military ganados is the worst part of the game.

Come see us in the Resident Evil community thread, where somebody is always mind-fucking themselves out of a perfectly good game!

(PS welcome to the fold, TC)

I'm so ready to play this game again. Craving it. But I know that rad HD textures fan remake that that one awesome Gaffer is making won't be ready for some time.

What's the best way to play it right now if I don't care at all about Wii controls? The PS4 version just released, or the latest official PC/Ultimate version?

True masterpiece, in my top 5. Endboss is garbage tho. I beat him once, on my first run, but I'll never do it again.

This game on Wii is one of my favorite games to replay. I wish I could get hd version for Wii U. I don't think I wanna play it with standard controls.

Lol. RE4 didn't even have co-op. It had escorting.

Village: incredible.

Castle: great.

Island: eh.

Island is the weakest part of the game, but it's not bad, nor is it even mediocre. It's still good. No nostalgia here btw, I played the game for the first time this year as well. I always thought the praise the game got was hyperbole, but I was wrong, it's as good as everyone says it is.

I like the Island for its darker and slower parts. The lab area is fitting. The big fights with military guys are fun but kind of clash with the rest of the game.

People saying Island is bad is just hyperbole at play. The Island is good. Is it as good as the Village/Castle? Nah. But it's still good, and hell, even had some amazing segments during it.

Gamers need to get off this black and white viewpoint of things. It's not good for discussion.

Yup, personally love the fight with what's his face, roided out soldier dude.

Krauser. The two Krauser fights are satisfying but for completely different reasons.

Yep, that's him. Actually the only part I found slightly annoying were the dogs in the maze, but dog enemies are typically annoying to me and I don't think that section was poorly designed or anything.

One thing I'll never understand is why they changed the Ashley segment in the western releases. It became the worst part of the game, when in the Japanese release, it played like a traditional RE with fixed camera angles. I figure it was meant to be homage to classic survival horror.

Edit: I just realized I said two different parts were the worst part of the game, on the same page. Hyperbole~

(The Island intro is a bit worse)

I don't think the Ashley part was that bad in the western release, through I should go watch the JP version as that sounds like a nice homage to the fixed camera style.

Anyway just been exploring a bit of the Island and this game still continues to be awesome. I got through least a good chunk of the lab area I think, and I love that the game just suddenly went all very eerie and survival horror like lol, as those "things" are introduced. D:

I'm of the castle > village variety.

It's hard to describe but the village is much more interesting to me when it has the air of mystery leading up to finding Luis, and after that, whilst the gameplay is good, the atmosphere isn't the same. I mean, I wouldn't change it, but I think it's interesting to consider a version where they could have exposed what was happening a lot slower.

You're in Mendes' house within 5 minutes and then you're like 'Oh, ok. There's rhyme and reason to this'.

The castle meanwhile is a funhouse, and absolutely relentless up to the very end and I feel it makes up the significant majority of fun in the game, through sheer encounter design, even if it's at the cost of feeling far less organic than the village beginning.

Gaming needed RE4 folks whether you like it or not. It inspired many great games that came after. I didn't like RE5 and RE6 is the only main line game I've not completed.

I started with RE1 on the Playstation and the series needed a change that's why we got RE4 which 'IS' a Resident Evil game.

I've recently picked it up again as it's finally seen a disc release in Europe on the PS4. 2017 will see another replay of one of the greatest games of all time :)

The game constantly changes so much so fast, and it isn't jarring but feels fresh. I don't know why it works, it feels like logically it shouldn't.

It's very easy to understand...people over here in general hated the fixed camera of the classic games even more. You'll find enough evidence of that in this forum if you look around. People already complain about the controls in general, I can just see the reactions over Ashley's section if they kept the fixed camera.

Same reason why the default control setting in the western RE5 release were the "modern" shooter controls, including half-baked and useless strafing, which was added late in development, because playtesters complained about the controls, while the japanese release defaulted to the original RE4 control scheme, for which the game was designed around.

Edit: Basically, this:

I can't tell you how great RE4 is because I can't get shake the awful controls. I'm spoiled by fluid movement and characters that behave like humans. This was designed to feel like you're a slow and clunky robot person, as a cheap way of instilling fear in the player.

I can't remember the last time I strafed around corners in real life, or saw someone doing it, btw.

TPS controls as we know them today did not yet exist when this game came out.

EDIT: I should say they weren't yet a standard. That didn't happen until Gears of War did it nearly 2 years later (or Rogue Trooper a few months before that).

I don't know why the hell I didn't go through this earlier lol. It going to storm into my 10 favorite games ever at this rate! I am just so hooked now.XD

I think my favorite thing about RE4 is the replayability. Obviously lots of games offer that but as far as an RE title something about RE4 keeps me coming back. Perhaps that's why I've bought it like 5 times at this point. Whenever it comes out on a new platform I'm like 'ok, yeah I'm down' and have fun with it.

Different ways to handle things, different ways to upgrade. Tricks you learn after you've played it a bit. I can't competitively speed run it and don't really play it that way, but it's fun to play through it a different way each time, and it still has the drama. I really appreciate games that reward people for really getting to know their intricacies, and this one does that extremely well.

I have mixed feelings on RE4. Sometimes I enjoy the game, sometimes I'm bored of it. Loved the atmosphere, files, killing Regenerators with infrared scope & snipers, treasure hunting (which added a sense of optional exploration to the game), the weapon upgrade system and how some weapons have powerful exclusive upgrades, the Merchant, Luis Sera, the occasional puzzles. Tank controls and Tetris inventory were fine to me as well. In my recent playthroughs, I got sick of the gunplay...which felt dated compared to The Evil Within's. This game had the best Mercenaries mode with argubaly the coolest characters. A shame the North American ver. didn't have an option of having the classic camera angles for Ashley's part, as some posters mentioned earlier. Story was fine to me, felt like it fit in well with the series imo.

I'm one of those fans who would like Capcom to make different sub series for different kinds of RE, some action horror, some classic fixed camera survival horror, etc. I respect what RE4 is for what it is, despite my mixed feelings on it.

Arguably the best game of its generation.

Surely that would have to be Halo? Unless you mean specifically Gamecube games.

I played through RE4 when it re-released on Steam, but I've been patiently waiting for http://www.re4hd.com/ to finish before replaying it again.

This latest update, though, means I might be playing it much sooner than I thought. 2016 might not be all bad after all.
At this point, I’d say this is the most we can do with this game!

I could be mis-remembering due to nostalgia, but I'm preeeeetty sure the latest versions let you map aiming to the right joystick, which makes it much better. The newest PC version also has pretty decent Mouse+Keyboard controls too. It makes aiming almost too easy, though.

I've owned every single Playstation version and the Wii version. If it comes out on a system I have I rebuy it. I'm a damn sucker for this game.

Also, once the ganados get chain guns and military weapons and shit is when they go too far. Having gun fights with zombies just isn't fun, especially with the controls the way they were made. I felt that was when they tried to extend their reach too far. It's easily the worst part of the game. Luckily it doesn't last too long.

In RE4? There are, like, six enemies in the entire game with guns.

The one you fight towards the beginning of the island is admittedly kind of a slog since he's alone, but I think the ones later on (and the one in the castle) are pretty fun.

Big Halo 1 fan and...I'd say RE4 is leagues ahead of it.

Imo, that's how their level design for all of the RE games are like. The beginning part is awesome and it progressively becomes worse as you go through later parts.
Yep. Especially in the old games, the beginning has plenty to discover, you are low on resources, and multiple paths can be taken. Then by the end you are in some boring factory/lab/industrial warehouse armed to the teeth walking down a bunch of linear hallways

This is definitely not popular opinion, but I feel like Mikami made RE4 the old hat when he outdid himself with The Evil Within. Similar basic third person shooting mechanics of RE4, but scarier, more threatening/challenging enemies, more interesting story, humor that is more funny and less cringy, better characters, etc. And you REALLY need to conserve ammo in TEW and use items sparingly, not every single grunt monster or random bird in a tree you shoot will drop ammo and currency. In fact stealth is usually plan A in that game. No merchant either, you pretty much need to find everything which makes it more intense. I don't know why it got such mixed reviews, it capitalizes on everything that made RE4 a good game but adds in better story, more challenges, etc.

I love RE4 as much as the next guy but I can never agree with the Island being the weakest part. It is easily my favourite area and I always look forward to getting there. Village might have been my fave if it was a little longer and the Castle for me, went on a little too long while the monks are my least favourite encounters. Island was super varied and just generally fantastic, and it has the best enemies in the series (generators) and some of the best boss fights.

I liked TEW enough when it came out, but I don't think it's anywhere near as strong as a game as RE4. When it gets rough I feel more like I'm fighting the controls than being challenged, the horror aspects are so overdone that doesn't even feel scary and then it hits a huge nosedive in quality come Chapter 11. But I still think the game has its highlights and is worth playing if you like these sorts of games.

And I thought the story was almost incomprehensible garbage but that's a low mark comparing it to RE4 ;p
