LTTP: Silent Hill 2 - I got a letter...

As far as story I think Shattered Memories is second in the series. Like SH2, Shattered Memories' ending effected me emotionally. I had a lingering melancholic feeling for days.

Has anyone ever heard Mary's voice calling James' name while in the hotel at the end? Just one, off-cue instance? I think it I heard it just as I was heading up the stairs to another floor while the hotel was still in its 'normal' state before James watches the video.

Not being sure whether I genuinely heard it made me feel sick with unease. The memory itself upsets me.

I've been tossing up on whether to get the HD collection or not. I've never played a SH game but SH2 is highly regarded and looks genuinely scary, so I'm definitely interested..

...however I recently played the Devil May Cry 1 for the first time in the DMC collection and was surprised by how displeased I was with the controls and camera. How have the SH2 controls and camera aged? Is it a struggle or does it work?

The HD Collection is crap, avoid it like the black death.
That said, SH2's controls are pretty borked now as they were at the time, though the games' strenght it is certainly not in the gameplay/combat as it is for DMC, so i think it's still very enjoyable.

Probably one of the best games ever made really.

And guys with the PC version, we need your modding skills. Ito himself just dropped THE bomb on Twitter.

When asked if Mary's body was in the trunk of James' car, he replied with: "If I remember correctly, it's on the back seat ( not in the trunk)."

Anyone able to check it out to see if it's even possible? :P
Probably just an idea the team had, and not modeled or anything, but would be fun.

Holy shit, megaton.
After years of speculation, he basically confirmed it?!

He did! But with that small "twist" to it.

So fucking good.

What the shit!?

But... James comes to Silent Hill whilst Mary's body is in the back of the car, with the whole "Is she really here?" playing in his mind? I mean... wasn't there a three year timespan in which Mary was dead? (The whole Laura/Mary part in the hospital, was that 1,5 years back or something?) Man I already forgot :O

Nope, James killed Mary three days (or was it three weeks?) prior to the happenings of SH2, and then repressed the memories of what he had done.

Noted, thanks for the tip. Will have to see if any of my friends have it on PS2.

Yeah I remember hearing the voice when trying to open a blocked caged door (?). Shit is HAUNTING because it is so unexpected. D:

Anyway, enough talk and faux-pretty writing. I loved the game and it's burned into my mind. The story, music and feeling will stick with me for a long time. I want to play something else (or another Silent Hill entry; probably gonna do Silent Hill 1 next; any non-spoiler opinions on it?) that's as story-strong as this.

Unfortunately, that's it. You've played the absolute best.

Both SH1 and 3 are pretty damn good games, but they can't compare to SH2 on any level. Let SH2 fully sink in before rushing to another game. Because there's no comparison.

I definitely will; too often have I played a sequel after another game just because I didn't want it to end. I stopped doing that. I know that SH2 is in a league itself, so I have to readjust my expectations (rather, have no expectations as I should with every game!) when starting a different game in the series)

Such a classic. Fantastic horror and characters. Terrific and personal plot. Arguably the best method of delivering multiple endings yet - last time I remember enjoying multiple endings this much was Westwood's Blade Runner.

And Pyramid Head. And that atmosphere of deep, cloying, bone cold dread.

The Exorcist of videogames.

I liked SH1 but apart from the atmosphere it was your usual horror film plot - SH3 too - but when I played SH2 I realized early on I was playing something destined to be a classc. Nice feeling and not one I have that often.

SH2 didn't bother with standard horror plots and narrative and races to stop evil characters completing their dasterdly plans. It was all about the characters. About the horror real life choices can force on us and the horror of every day experience.

One of the few videogames I've ever felt was genuinely mature in its themes.

Love this game.

Maybe someone here can help me with some issues I've been having with some PC copies I picked up of silent hill 2 and 3.

I did everything in this post but I still cant get it to show up in full resolution Widescreen. Thankfully the sound issues and framerate Issues I've managed to fix but It'd be nice to play with full screen without stretching.

I launch the Patch and then launch the game and then it doesn't do anything.

Would there be any fix for the controls? I cant seem to make a gamepad work or configure it in game either, the Xbox pad works but the attack button is set at START and action button is A, this configuration is so absurd.

If you can't get past the gamepad problem with conventional workarounds, try xpadder.

You can remap the whole gamepad to keyboard keys and go from there.

Yeah. It happens when you're on the stairway with the locked gate leading to their room.

Set the resolution in the options to 640x480. It needs to be set that for the widescreen patch to work, but the instructions don't mention that.
