LTTP- Sleeping Dogs: This Bark is strong

One of my favorite games. Wish it got a sequel and still hope United Front Games and Square Enix will do something.

Great Game. It's actually my favorite GTA style game....including GTA.

Fun story, cool setting and good gameplay. Both the hand to hand combat and shooting was great. The driving itself could have been better but I loved that you could jump from one car to the other and the over the top explosions when shooting at other cars during chases.

A shame that it didn't get an actual sequel. What a waste of a talented dev and a cool IP

I wish they made a sequel. Why hasn't that happened yet?

Because someone decided it would be a great idea to make a crappy MMO based on it instead of a proper sequel

Sleeping Dogs surprisingly handled a lot of things exceedingly well, especially the atmosphere and the soundtrack. However, one of its best parts was that damned dojo where breaking arms and physically busting knee caps in between the exaggerated kung-fu strikes is considering "sparring," all while Wei Shen's friend (the sifu) is endlessly trash talking his bloodied pupils. The hilarity of it all motivated me more than anything else to collect those jade statues.

"Strong like BEAR! Not LIMP like noodle!"

Fantastic game, I bought the DE on sale recently and I'm looking forward to going through the whole thing again.

Finally got to try the DLC too, and unfortunately I have to agree that it's pretty underwhelming, at least the two bigger ones were, haven't gotten to the tournament one yet.

Awesome game, highly recommended, in fact I may have to delete my game save so I can play through it again...

Absolutely loved it when it first came out, a real surprise gem. I tried replaying it a few months ago and it felt quite dated already which was a shame.

Got it free with plus on ps3 and beat it. Bought it on ps4 and have been meaning to go back, one of my favorite games of the past couple years.

It went under my radar at launch on PS3, so I picked it up a few years later. I really enjoyed it and realised after that it was indeed a spiritual successor to True Crime.

Yeah and that's a damn damn shame. Wasn't that MMO cancelled anyway?

Just unbelieveable though. True Crime was dead, the new one is picked up and turns into Sleeping Dogs and turns out great. People seemed to love it and i recall the sales not being too bad at all..yet of course Square Enix was expecting unrealistically high sales. Weren't they disappointed about Hitman Absolution, Tomb Raider and Deus Ex HR's as well? Yet they all got new games.

Yes, the plug was pulled on Triad Wars even after the Sleeping Dogs moniker was removed from it. I'm not sure who the decision was made by to make the MMO but it wasn't a good one. The reveal trailer from UFG was really upsetting to me. lol, especially where they mention that they were listening to what people liked and wanted.

True, none of those games hit the target but by now with the re-release and sales it probably passed the numbers. I would think that the lesson Square Enix would learn there is to get better with projecting their sales targets. Are we waiting on Square to greenlight the game? Or waiting on UFG to deliver? No clue what they are working on now that Triad Wars has been canned.

Wut? The DLC where you travel to the island doing the tournament is amazing.

only dlc I saw was snake and the other ghost one

not sure if there was a tourney there but the dlc is garbage or sure. So even if this tournament thing is decent, why would you say wut to what I was talking about?

One of my favorite games from the last generation. Started a new game the day after I finished it. A sequel would be a day 1 purchase for me.

I'm playing through it for the third time right now, first time on PC. I'm still figuring out stuff I didn't know before. I didn't know you could upgrade you're apartments!

I only noticed that on the second play through myself when doing the definitive edition on ps4. I'm actually getting ready to do a 3rd play through and first time on PC coincidentally. There were more mechanics I found in the 2nd play through so I wonder if I will see anything new on the 3rd time.

EDIT:

And as far as the DLC go, the tournament/Enter the Dragon dlc was by far the best but still wasn't super great. There was a really badly done part of it towards the end as well. The real star is far and away the main game.

It was pretty good, my only problem was the Melee combat became not challenging in the end, you get way too strong and enemies never really surprise anymore...

That
marriage sequence
was freaking epic !

GTA clone, yes, but with a satisfactory melee system and lots of personality. Good memories about it, will have to replay some day.

Really enjoyed my run through this game - great combat, good store, awesome environment. Granted you were playing as the worst undercover cop of all time (how many innocent bystanders probably died due to me?) but it was one of those things you could get over pretty easily.

Skipped a large chunk of the gathering crap, but thankfully that stuff was clearly totally optional.

Do wish there had been more races as the driving engine was really enjoyable.

So after this game sitting on my backlog shelf for ages I decided to finally start it. Loving it so far. Hong Kong has such a great vibe to it in this game.

One of the best games and nicest surprises of its year, and honestly of the last gen. I enjoyed it a lot.

I've practically 100%ed it twice.

I'm grateful to Square Enix for saving this game. It's hard to believe it was once cancelled.

This game was so good man. I played it on PS4 (including the weird fight tournament DLC). Even the side stuff was pretty fun, I remember getting close to 100% and unlocking a bunch of dope outfits like the Bruce lee jump suit or the Reservoir Dogs suit + skinny tie.

I just wish we could get a proper sequel. Probably won't happen at this point =[

It wasn't the complex thing ever, but the melee combat was so satisfying. I would literally go around looking for those hidden lock boxes just so I could get into huge brawls with the groups of thugs that would be near them.

Lol. I did the same thing. Usually to test out new moves in actual combat like elbow drops or heavy, sprinting weapon attacks

I loved Sleeping Dogs and it introduced me to Bombay Bicycle Club, which I'm thankful for. Shuffle started playing during the Emma Stone date and it was such a perfect song for the moment that I thought it was scripted, then I found out it was random.

I love the HK Blood Opera vibe and wish the characters had more to it (especially the girlfriends most of whom turn up for one at most missions). Though Wei and his immediate friends have a lot going on; his best friend was really well written.

I don't understand why more open world games set in more real life location hasn't attempting to replicate the more involved melee combat system. It's way more fun to me than most open-world IRL game's run-and-gun. Of course sleepy dawgs had that too, but it was absolutely second to the brawling.

This game was an underrated gem, I enjoyed it a lot and I hope to see another game with Wei Shen. The shooting is pretty much the only thing that I would want an improvement on, as it felt a little unsatisfying compared to the melee combat.

Fjordson out here acting like you're an OG Triple OG Sleeping Dogs fan. I still remember when you were fighting me to the death wearing your GTAV cape taking about "Meh sleeping dergs is ok i guess nyehh".... that's my impression of you.

Anyway, Sleeping Dogs is great. My favorite open world game last gen, and I'm not expecting a sequel because this universe is nothing but chaos and suffering.

RIP Pork Buns

I only finished this a week or two ago after a hefty hiatus, powering through the story. Didn't even realise after I'd finished that I'd completely skipped most of the dating side quests, including one that showed me how to hack cameras(!).

Really enjoyed, probably on a par or slightly lower than Saint's Row 2 for me in terms of open-world "GTA clones".

Haha, originally I didn't like it. I think maybe it was the 360 version that colored my initial impressions or something? I quit playing it super quickly.

But once the PS4 version came out I was determined to give it more of a chance and ended up liking it a lot.

Went through Sleepy Dawgs last night again... did all the main missions in one 4 hour sitting.

The best part of the story is really the pacing... it's one of the best 'movie stories' in an action game IMO. The main missions (so not every required mission but basically all those important to the story) being 5-6 hours kinda highlights how Sleeping Dogs is basically paced in Infernal Affairs parts 1 and 2... (the movie that The Departed was based on).

Most of the missions are a fast taut and satisfying 15-20 minutes and the story doesn't waste too much time at any given point in the plot. A lot of games may take longer trying to develop things... e.g. We need extra missions to try show that Wei Shen is earning face with the Triad; We need extra missions to build up a relationship or a death.

Sleeping Dogs and characters like Wei Shen, Winston, Dog Eyes, Peggy, etc are a perfect example of fast pacing that still creates 'attachment' -- or what better described as movie-esque emotional response.

If something like GTA V is essentially a better example of a drama that spans numerous episodes and perhaps even has 2-3 distinct seasons, Sleeping Dogs is paced like a movie.

One other thing that I've found on revisiting the game recently and also last year is that it's actually surprisingly gorgeous and enjoyable HUD-less. Which is more difficult than most games because of its QTE and waypoint reliance, and there's no HUD customization (just an off/on toggle).

But combat...
shootouts: https://youtu.be/FnaXq_x36VE?t=4664
and melee: https://youtu.be/FnaXq_x36VE?t=1093
...Look and feel great without a HUD and the gunplay (with its added inaccuracy) is actually somehow more satisfying and looks even better... seriously, if you own the game, give it a try... turn off those ugly crosshairs and go try one of the shootout missions HUD-less.

Not to mention the city in general:

Such as night market neon, just looks gorgeous.

It might be the best open world game last generation and you're right about the characters being great. I still remember what happened to Dogeyes and how sad I was about
Winston and Peggy.

I really want to get back to playing this game. Started playing it on PC and had so much fun with it. Only played like 5 hours of it though but I intend to return to it

Only comlplaint is the lack of verticality. I bet the city looked great at night in the air.

Sun on yee for life mother fuckers!!!

YOU FOUGHT THE LAW AND THE, LAW WON!

Since this was one of the games I bought in the recent steam sale I was about to play it next after Far Cry 4 but I want to play Deus Ex HR - Director's Cut first.

But I can't wait to get to this game again. Going to enjoy it a lot just like the previous playthroughs. I really want this game to get a sequel. Definitely one of my favorite games I have ever played.

United Front Games, what are you doing?

Yeah, I kind of wish there was more verticality in the game to a certain extent. I enjoyed some of the rooftop traversal and fighting high up on the tops of overpasses.

I had interest way before the game launched but didn't try it until it was GwG.

Very impressed with the quality and little details. Combat and dialogue were great.

I remember in 2013 on how I was like "after games like Sleeping Dogs there's no way in hell Rockstar will continue to have such shitty (melee) combat in GTA V, I mean at the very least they should have grappling" then GTA V came out.

To be fair, GTA V has some pretty satisfying one hitters :P

Love smoking people with a baseball bat haha.

But yeah, it was stunningly simple (and easy) after not only GTA4 but Sleepy Dawgs, too.

Actually it struck me that Square Enix actually produced a few great games with Chinese gangster settings around the turn of the decade.

Kane & Lynch 2 Dog Dogs in Shanghai.
Deus Ex Human Revolution in Hengsha (Shanghai river port area IIRC)
Hitman Absolution in Chinatown, New York
Sleeping Dogs in Hong Kong

For a while there thanks to Eidos it seemed more likely to see a Square Enix logo in front of a game with a shootout with a Triad gangster than a chocobo ride with a Black Mage.
