LTTP: SNES (Also, Castlevania revelation.)

I was a Sega Genesis man.

So I've been in a mood recently where I've kind of just been bored with modern games, so I decided to go back and play some older games, but I thought now might as be as good as a time as any to start playing through the SNES's library of hits.

So far, I've only played Super Castlevania IV, and that brings me to my other point. I'm not so sure Symphony of the Night is the best Castlevania anymore. Now, I have never been one for the "traditional" Castlevania games, meaning the ones without RPG mechanics, but holy shit is SCV IV amazing. Everything is so fluid, and it's difficulty is perfect. I'm currently stuck right now, and I have it on pause, but it reminds me of the Mega Man games. Basically, if take your time to learn the game, you can beat it. You actually need skill! It's pretty amazing, and it's basically perfection of that type of game. I love all of Symphony's RPG stuff, but I never felt that it hits the highs that this one does. Amazing.

Anyway, I was going to play Rondo of Blood next, but I don't want to get CV fatigue, so I thought I'd mix it up. I'm willing to take ANY suggestions. Remember, I never had a SNES before, so I'm a complete newbie to it. I'm willing to listen to any suggestions, and as to why I should play them next after SCV IV, so long as they're not games I played on Genesis like Street Fighter II or something.

It's kind of exciting, because all these games are technically old, but at the same time they feel new to me. They have those tried and true styles of gameplay that everyone loves, but they are still unplayed experiences.

Unlucky, op

Because I posted in Off-topic, or because of the people who replied?

SCIV is far and away the best traditional cv game.
Yeah, I remember playing the other ones and liking them, but not this much. How is Rondo of Blood?
Link to the Past. Now.
Why are you still here? I said now!

I was thinking about that. How long is it? I was not sure if I should go to that or maybe Super Mario World or Super Mario RPG or what. Many choices.

Jeez not another death thread

Zoinks. The turkey sandwich is malevolently orange.

Super Mario RPG second. Those two games are my two personal favorite games of all time. By a rather large margin actually. They defined my childhood.

Castlevania IV is indeed a contender for the best game in the series. In a pinch, I'd probably side with Dracula X, but it could go either way, really.

You think those back to back would be a good idea? They both are fairly long, aren't they?

That excites me because IV is simply brilliant.

Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Contra III, Mario World, Chrono Trigger... you got some good times ahead.

Rondo of Blood is quite good, but its very unlike SCIV. SCIV is pretty unique within the series, which is too bad.

(also, you posted in the wrong forum and should therefore be made the subject of fun)

How so? I thought it was a traditional CV game rather than one with the RPG mechanics.\

Also yes, what a fool I have been. The wrong button was highlighted blue when I hit post topic!

Also, the SNES Dracula X isn't Rondo of Blood. It's kind of/sort of a remake like SCIV is a remake of the first Castlevania, with all new levels and stuff. IIRC it's generally perceived as not as good, at that; much more difficult, and not necessarily in the good way. Probably still worth a go, though.

It is a traditional Castlevania, however it doesn't have the multi-directional whipping mechanics of SCIV. It's gameplay is closer to the NES Castlevania titles, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing. They're just very different in the way they play.

Dracula X better than Castlvania IV?

Why did no other cv game offer the free-directional whip that sciv did?

Dude, it's so fucking rad. I thought at first, "why the hell would I use this?" And about half an hour in your swinging it around praying to hit the floating eyeball before he shoots down at you, all while ducking hoping not to get hit by the dinosaur skulls.

This is one of the best things I've read on GAF!

I'm glad, I honestly didn't expect it to be this good. Like I said, I'm a RPG guy, but I just love how everything is crafted with the whip in mind, it just feels amazing.

I mean... sure, but I don't see the problem there. Would you say no to having sex with Scarlett Johansson if she said you had to keep having sex with her for the next year?

That's a good point.

Go for A Link to the Past, EarthBound, and Terranigma.

Also, check out SimCity. Odd suggestion, but I love it.

I don't know if I'm remembering correctly, but I thought Harmony of Dissonance had the freely movable whip as well.

I'll let everyone else mention the obvious ones.

But play these two disney games.

Easy, fun, and short...

This one might make you cry from anger at some parts.

Did they make a Genesis version of Lion King? I remember there was a Genesis Aladdin, and it was pretty good. Will check these out though, thank you.

if you played the genesis Lion King, I think it's the same.

Aladdin is different though.

I was also a Genesis kid.

I did some dabbling in the vast SNES library but not much. Got an old style SNES this year to get S-Video support. Somehow the hardware inside is busted and some of the graphics on screen are wonky and make some games unplayable.

I just snagged one of these.

S-Video connection does a nice job in making the HUD text in games readable like you were a kid sitting 3 feet from the TV in the 90s. Component comparisons I have seen online is more about color depth.

Genesis Lion King was pretty awesome. I remember how awesome I felt catching all the bugs from the Timon and pumbaa mini game

Both of these are correct.

Lion King is most likely prettier and sounds better, by virtue of being on the console with the better palette and sound chip, but if you've played it on the Genesis, you're really not missing anything important in the SNES version.

Aladdin on the SNES was by Capcom, while Aladdin on the Genesis was by Virgin Games. Both are excellent titles worth playing; I prefer the Genesis version, but really, the SNES game is way up there, too.

Nice! How are you liking it so far? It's cool to see the games everyone was ranting and raving over back in the day.

If you enjoyed Rocket Knight Adventures on the Genesis, you might enjoy Sparkster for the SNES as well. It's a great game almost nobody ever talks about.

Never played RKA on Genesis even sadly, but I'll add this to the list for sure. Maybe play the Genesis game as well.

I haven't gotten it yet.

Something cool to get is a GameSaver Plus. You can do save states for hard parts in hard games cause they still made those in the 90s. And it lets you plug in import games no problem.

Why did no other cv game offer the free-directional whip that sciv did?

Every jump in player ability seems to require an exponential jump in level design to maintain the same sense of difficulty and creativity. Nobody likes rules, but the rules make the game. That's why Metroidvania (with it's wide range of player-abilities) is all about hit points and attack/defense points.

SCIV was revolutionary, but people complained that the difficulty was inconsistent with CV I&III, so Toru Hagihara played it safe and went back to basics for Dracula X instead of refining the formula, and then he came up with Metroidvania.

Secret of Mana. Gameplay is tight, soundtrack is amazing, graphics are bright and colorful. It's a very action-y RPG with tons of depth in the magic and weapon system.

Do it. Favorite game of all time for me.

Pilotwings is a pretty sweet little game. It's not very long unless you get stuck, but it's rewarding when you do pass the license tests. I really dig the laid back nature of the game and music, and its between-challenge screens with the instructors. When you f up, they can be pretty blunt ;)

Appreciate the suggestions everybody! Thank you.

Also, on a side not, holy fuck is Stage 8 on SCV IV hard as shit!

That was fucking awful. So, I doubt anybody is going to know this off the top of their heads, but do you remember the spikes that shoot out from the ceiling in that little hallway in Stage 8 of SCV IV? Okay, so I kept on trying and trying, to find a pattern that would work, but to no avail. I managed to make it through a few times, but not really out of planning, more due to luck. Anyway, after dying multiple times, I just get pissed and decide to off my last guy (since I had 00 lives left) and I crouched and ran into the spike....except I didn't run into a spike. Oh no, I ran right under the spikes. Even though the spike is still going through the characters head, it's apparently not hitting me.

On stage A (10) right now and loving it.
