LTTP: SNES (Also, Castlevania revelation.)

I was also a Genesis kid.

I did some dabbling in the vast SNES library but not much. Got an old style SNES this year to get S-Video support. Somehow the hardware inside is busted and some of the graphics on screen are wonky and make some games unplayable.

I just snagged one of these.

S-Video connection does a nice job in making the HUD text in games readable like you were a kid sitting 3 feet from the TV in the 90s. Component comparisons I have seen online is more about color depth.

I want a Snes like that right now. Where did you manage to get one of those?

Metroid Fusion is good but it doesn't touch Super Metroid.. or even Zero Mission imo.

So you put Zero Mission over Fusion? Yeah, I could see that. For me Zero Mission was still an amazing game, but it didn't hit the same heights as Fusion though. Who cares though, they're both near perfect games though in my book. So fucking solid.

Damn, I hope they make a new 2D Metroid for something soon.

yeah Fusion was an interesting experiment with the formula but I still found ZM more satisfying as a whole. of course, Super Metroid is untouchable.

I believe every region's SNESes can use S-Video and RGB.

Bit of history: You know that AV multi-out that the SNES, N64, and Gamecube uses? It supports S-Video and RGB. But S was only really popular in Japan at the time of the SNES's release, so the S-Video cable was only released in Japan. A SCART cable was released in Europe, I believe.

S-Video and RGB were stripped out of American N64's altogether. (I may be wrong about this.)

With the release of the Gamecube, the S-Video cable was brought to America, and it works with the SNES.

IMO, some of the best SNES games:
Donkey Kong Country
Legend of Zelda: LTTP
Chrono Trigger
Breath of Fire II
Demon's Crest
Super Metroid

Modern gaming still aspires to these levels...and fails in most cases.

Have you played Fusion? That's still probably my favorite, but I haven't played Super yet.

Come on, man. You don't think I've played JAM? :D Love that shit!

You really should play Super Metroid. Easily the best game on the system... in my opinion the best video game made before the year 2000.

Super Metroid is probably the best game ever.

Best single player game ever at least.

Been replaying it recently and I'm consistently amazed by how many options I have at any given point in the game. Why do games no longer allow me to sequence break like this? I saw a difficult to scale wall that was obviously climbable with some effort. 5 minutes later I have super bombs hours earlier than I should have otherwise. It made me feel like a fucking pro. Why do developers think this is a bad thing?

I know that Snes supports S-Video natively as I use it with GCN S-Video cables. The Snes in the pic I quoted seems to be modded for Component video out, which is what I was asking for. Perhaps I'm better off getting a SCART RGB cable and a transcoder for Component.

EDIT. It was actually RGB compatibility which was removed in N64s, but it could be modded back in certain early models / moderboards.

they don't think it's bad, but it's much harder to implement in three dimensions. certain 3D games do embrace this type of design, however.

Not a big SNES fan, since I don't like RPGs so much. Not a big SCVIV fan either. Ugly, brown color palette and some embarrassing mode 7.

Gradius 3, Axeley, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, EVO the search for eden, Contra 3, Super Punch-Out, and Mega Man X3 are all pretty fun.

I'm comparing it directly to later Metroid games which did not only not include potential sequence breaks but went out of their way to make the few sequence breaks discovered impossible when releasing later versions of the game.
Fuck you Metroid Fusion and later versions of Metroid Prime

It's true though, a few games like Morrowind certainly did keep the mindset of letting the player do whatever they want whenever they felt they were ready for it. Like you mentioned though, it's much harder to implement such things in 3d, especially if you want it to feel as satisfying as the 2d counterparts.

Super Metroid is probably the best game ever.

Word.

I've yet to find a game that has made me feel like I did the first time I played through Super Metroid circa 1994/1995. Nor a game that I've wanted to go back to and replay as many times as I have Super Metroid. It's pretty much perfect in my book.

Did you own any other Nintendo consoles?

Good suggestions, but if I was a poster in this thread, I would stick with what were SNES and still are SNES exclusives to take full advantage of this.

Super Castlevania IV is a good start.

I'd say try something like Super Metroid, truly a master piece. Seriously.

If you want to give a traditional RPG a shot, I'd definitly be looking into Super Mario RPG. Isn't this on Virtual Console?

Earthbound is a good option too.

I'll suggest Pilotwings. It was probably my most rented game. Still never beat it. I like the N64 version more though. I think this is on Virtual Console also.

Another traditional RPG you could check out is Illusion of Gaia.

Have you ever played a Star Fox?

Super Punch Out is one of my favorites. I can play that about 10 times over.

Fun platformer I owned as a kid was Tiny Toons Buster Busts Loose. Never beat it though, sigh. I need to now.

And as posted previously, seriuos, if you have not played Link to the Past on Game Boy or Virtual Console or the Gamecube discs (it was on that special edition disc wasn't it?), play it now. It is truly an epic.

It upsets children these days when the super bombs don't roll down the cliff and into their lap.

I know what you mean though. When I was a kid, I would spend hours trying to do bomb loops to bounce myself up to ledges I shouldn't get to. At least a week went into seeing what was at the top of the area you depart from your ship in. I didn't know it would be so easy later...

Yes, I realized a couple minutes ago you were referring to the component, so I lazily edited my post. :lol

Anyway, I think I found the source of that image. Apparently, it was only discovered a few months ago that you can mod an SNES for component. The discovery of this mod was posted here, I believe.

If you want more detailed instructions, there are some here (in Spanish... Use Google Translate). It's actually a very easy mod...

For maximum awesome, you can also mod an SNES for S/PDIF digital audio. Though that's a much harder mod for very little reward.

Final Fantasy III/VI
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Shadowrun
Super Mario World
LTTP
Super Metroid
Super Mario Kart
Donkey Kong Country

play the Donkey Kong Country trilogy (especially DKC2), Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Megaman X, Super Mario Kart, A Link to the Past, and the list goes on.

Did you own any other Nintendo consoles?

It's funny, we had a NES, a N64, I bought a Gamecube, and every single Gameboy version, besides maybe the GBA Micro. We just didn't have what many consider to be Nintendo's best console.

Super Castevania IV is my favorite game of all time. Glad to see you like it.
I can definitely see why. Really amazing so far. Going to go try and beat the rest of the game now actually. (I'm on Stage A.)

Not gonna harass you about posting in the wrong forum, just going to say

Chrono Trigger

A Link to the Past

They're so good, I know people always say it, but it's true, they're just amazing

edit:

How did I forget,

Donkey Kong 1, 2 and 3. All great, 2 is best, but all great

no yeah I've played a lot of the games. super mariokart, donkey kong, and other games were staples at friends' houses. but I never owned one.

I played a lot of Super Mario World at my friend's house when I was like 8

I know part of it is nostalgia, but that game feels huuuuuuuge in my memory, 100+ levels? Man, sogood.gif

Genesis does what Nintendon't!

I'm gonna take a breather from Casvlevania until tomorrow, I was starting to get pissed. I don't want to get into Link to the Past yet, because I want to give it my full attention, so I'm going to give Contra III a try.

Of course Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island are must plays. I'd add Zombies Ate My Neighbors if you didn't play it on Genesis? That is a great game. I feel like everyone covered any other suggestions I could make already... haha. I enjoyed the SNES, but got it way after it released. Back when Gamestop/Funcoland would sell older used games and systems. I had a Genesis when I was young, but didn't get the SNES until I'd say 10 years ago. I did enjoy it, but didn't put as much time in with it as I'd have liked. Played quite a few games I missed on the GBA though.

Find a way to play Terranigma.
Seriously.
Do it.

snesfreak

With that name I have to check it out. I actually heard of this game before from Clan of the Gray Wolf.

Oh and Contra III....

eBq9q.gif

...it's so beautiful. It's so fast, I can't think a game that just starts off that quickly and bang it's on 11. You feel like such a badass with just the regular machine, and there's hell to pay once you get the Spread Gun. Nice to see that the Laser still sucks ass too.

What's stopping you now?

I sort of agree. I never liked the linear aspects of Fusion much. Zero Mission is good, but it becomes great if you replay it in hard mode. It disappointed me that hard mode wasn't available straight from the start. Because it made the game a far more enjoyable experience for me.

I also feel like the original Super Mario Kart was the best game in the series for me. IMO it had the best balance between racing skill and combat/ evasion, and the coin play mechanic was also a great touch.

Oh and Contra III...

It's still one of my favorite games in that series. Contra: Hard Corps on the Genesis was pretty fantastic too.

And don't forget Turtles in Time. It's one of the best beat-em-ups on the SNES.

I would have to say that my favorite Mario Kart is Double Dash still. It has all the accouterments of a Mario Kart game, but it had some other nice new mechanics, and it had an amazing sense of speed. I love 2D games, especially 16 bit, but I can definitely say that racing games have gotten way, way better going into 3D. SMK and F Zero just feel smushed down (the point of view and sense of speed) after playing MK 64 or F Zero GX. Still fun to play for sure, but I wouldn't ever put them over newer iterations.

I actually played Turtles in Time back on the Xbox 360 all the way through. I used to play with friends back in the day. Awesome game.

CTL+F 'super metroid'

*realizes majority of thread is praising Super Metroid*

I haven't seen you say you're going to play it immediately, Izick. What gives?

Obviously he is saving the best game of all time for last.

I assume this as there is no other logical reason to not be playing it already.

The SNES was the golden age of gaming so you've made a good choice. I'll list all the games you need to play, many of which just like CV4 are the height of their series and genre!

Contra 3
Pop n twinbee
Turtles in time
Axelay

Mickeys magical quest
Aladdin

Super mario world
Mario kart
Fzero
ALTTP
metriod
Starfox
Yoshi's island
Donkey long country series

Fuck there are so many games!

Go to gamefaqs and find everything by Nintendo, Konami and capcom as a starting point!

DO IT NAOW!

You should play Illusion of gaia, the Lufia games, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Demons Crest, The Capcom Mickey Mouse platformers. Then of course the usual suspects like Super Mario World, Link to the Past, Super Metroid and so on. So many amazing games for the SNES.

I don't know, I never had any problems with the simple mode 7 graphics of SMK or F-Zero, myself. But I never really cared for how the balance in Mario Kart shifted to more of a game of chance than actual driving skill. But that's just me. F-Zero did get better with later iterations though, that I can agree with.

Wasn't the XBox 360 version the 3D remake? I haven't played that one. Though, the SNES version was actually better in some respects to the original arcade game. As it featured some additional levels and bosses not seen in the arcade.

If you enjoyed Rocket Knight Adventures on the Genesis, you might enjoy Sparkster for the SNES as well. It's a great game almost nobody ever talks about.
Like Aladdin on the Mega Drive this is one of those cases where the SNES game is completely different to the Mega Drive version. Konami would say it was obvious (despite the boxart being identical) given that the Mega Drive game is called Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2...except it is only called that in Japan...and IIRC on the logo after the prologue fight.

Then again with Contra and Castlevania having different Mega Drive games it could almost be given the Sparkster would be different.

Well I'm with ya OP.. I had a "holy shit Castlevania IV is brilliant" moment one year ago. I had dabbled in it a lot in emulators, etc... But it was a new moment of revelation about how great it was.

In some ways it was more legitimately a "horror" title than the Hollywood monster fetish of the NES games, or the self-referential CV fetish "anime" theme of later titles.

The best console ever made!

Play the DKC series and Lufia 2.

God nobody play the Donkey Kong Country games.

Graphics were mind-blowing at the time but these days look cheap and plasticy.

Gameplay was never good and the level design is non-existent.

Have to heavily disagree with this part. DKC has some of the best controls in a game period. DKC1 is pretty dated at this point but DKC2 has more interesting levels, better playable characters and the best music in the series. DKC3 is okay but I'd play that last.

Yeah I also disagree with the revisionism that DKC is a bad game. I've played it recently.. The platforming gameplay is good.

Yes, there was a certain amount of deprogramming that the lot of us had to go through after the graphics-augmented positivity towards DKC when it launched. But I am so over that. It's a fine game.

DKC is indeed a fine game, and I break out the first two for a quick run through from time to time, but you have to admit, it's a little bit...vanilla.

Yes. True. But I personally think we should have gotten over that revelation in 2002 or whatever. The fact remains that it's better than most non-Mario platformers.
