LTTP: SNES (Also, Castlevania revelation.)

Yeah, that's basically what I'm getting from playing all these SNES games. It's just one amazing game after the next, and the best thing is, for me, they're all new games! The only problem I have is what order to play stuff, and that's no problem at all. That's the best "problem" you can have.

The only order I'd suggest is to try to exhaust the best before you move on the rest and try to pinball from genre to genre so that you don't feel they repeat or overlap or get burned out. I'd also try to oscillate between long and short games because I like to do that more generally.

The most important thing NOT to do is... don't buy 50 games and play 5 minutes of each of them. Stick to it like you're doing, at most one or two games at once, so you get the most out of them :)

Is Hard Mode Quest 2? Fuuuuuuck. What changes? I may attempt that some day, but not right now. I think I yelled "FUCK" aloud enough times for today.

Yeah. You can use a password to access it also so you don't have to play through again.
I don't think you take more damage, but enemies can take more hits and there are more of them.

God, one of the rooms in Super Metroid is just so poorly designed.

It's the room with the enemies that diminish your light if you kill them, and you have to use your ice beam to freeze those flying claw guys in order to jump on them, but their movement pattern is so random that just getting it right requires this awful amount of patience that at this point I'm not even sure I have anymore.

Dear Lord I mean I love this game so much but this room sucks, just to get the X-Ray Visor (or whatever it's called). I even managed to get it once but I failed to leave that awful room with it alive. Unless I'm missing something, then just fuck me.

if this is the room i'm thinking of, you're not supposed to be able to get through that room yet with just the ice beam. i know because i spent like an hour trying to freeze the flying enemies in just the right place so i could get to the other side and all that was there was endless spikes.

you're supposed to come back when you have the
grappling hook
.

In my opinion, Symphony of the Night is the best IGAvania and Super Castlevania IV is the best Classicvania. (Lords of Shadow is technically the best 3Dvania, but given how horrendous the competition for that title is, I'd much rather group it in its own category as the first Lords of Shadow game)

However, Super Metroid is the game that puts the "Metroid" in Metroidvania, so get that if you haven't already. Other than that, get the Mario games... Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and if you never owned a NES, get Super Mario All-Stars as well. Also pick up, Link to the Past, Final Fantasy II (technically IV Easytype), Final Fantasy V (Japan-Only on the Super Famicom), Final Fantasy III (technically VI), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, SimCity, and Kirby Super Star. All are great games from the SNES.

Whoo found an SNES at a thrift store today. Only problem is...I have no games to actually test the thing (all my SNES stuff was stolen long ago, with a busted Saturn, but thats another story).

Going to need to grab some of the better games not available on the NA VC (and some that are...really want an actual copy of Cybernator), do my import "mod" again, and then maybe grab some great import titles that are easy to play without JP knowledge.

Also was Dracula XX actually that bad? I've already got the VC version of Castlevania IV, but not sure if there are any noticeable differences there. I know I want Secret of Mana at some point, since the VC one is busted with late button response.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I wanted to not do two RPG's in a row, because that shit can burn you out quickly, not to mention the length.

I was a Genesis kid too and feel like I missed out on so much. Are those SNES/NES loaders worth it or would I be better off finding a regular SNES since those are super cheap anyways?

Also you guys should play Brawl Brothers / Rushing Beat Ran(?) Fun beat em up with catchy Jaleco music.

EDIT: Being a mostly Nintendo kid, I think I might need to revisit some non-VC/collection genesis and saturn titles as well.

I wouldn't say it was terrible. But in comparison to Castlevania IV, it was lack luster. Dracula XX had great graphics and a good soundtrack, but the level design was rather ho-hum.

the PCE Rondo of Blood was excellent though, I'm not sure why people complain about that one? Bloodlines on the Genesis, while not as good as Castlevania IV, was a much better game than Dracula XX on the SNES. Bloodlines was very underrated.

I had a Genesis long before I had an SNES, I remember saving up my own money just to get one for Revenge of Shinobi, when I was a kid. And it was worth it. But I did eventually get an SNES too as a Christmas present. So I had both machines growing up. The SNES was always my go to system for RPG's and Platforming adventure games. But the Genesis was the place where I went for the arcade-y stuff. It was great to the best of both worlds when growing up.

Go legit... those clones sometimes have issues with special chips / piracy lockouts, and can even have weaker colors / audio due to cruddy parts.

Yeah I need to find a cheap model 1 or 2 genesis (i'd like a model 1 since I got a model 2 for christmas around when Sonic 3 released) and grab Bloodlines and Contra Hard Corps. Good to know XX wasnt that bad though. One of these days i'll manage to get a Turbo Duo + Rondo, or at least get the Wii VC version if its not that different (have DX chronicles, but i'd rather play the original on the TV).

After reading around some you're right. They seem to have issues with completely accurately replicating the original. http://sega-addicts.murnaumusic.com/?p=5202 that seems amazing for convenience but given the choice I think I'd prefer legit if it's not the same, especially since originals are just as cheap.

Thread derail! Let's talk about how awesome genesis is. Contra Hard Corps is truly golden. I think I'll boot it up right now. I also miss play Thunder Force IV...

I can't believe how much of an improvement this s-video cable is! To anyone getting a SNES now, please do yourself a favor and find a GC/64 s-video cable. Even the generic ps2/GC/xbox connector types should work.

Got it.

EDIT: What about LCD + Svideo?

Does it look better than playing the games on Wii using component cables or about the same?

Some of my favorite games of all time.

Oh, how I miss the days when Kirby was on a box art without a scowl on his face.

Also, in response to the OP, if you like painfully difficult strategy RPGs, OGRE BATTLE. There is a reason that it is one of the most ridiculously expensive carts to get your hands on, why it was remade on PSX and why, despite being a low seller, it was on Virtual Console REALLY early in the Wii's lifespan. It's an AMAZING game with a learning curve like no other and is part of the reason that people consider Matsuno a godly game designer.

I enjoyed a good challenge in SCV IV (it feels like its been a while) so I'll definitely check this out as well.

EDIT: That reminds me....should I try Super Ghouls and Ghosts....is it just going to drive me insane?

Besides all the obvious picks:

Nobody ever talks about this game. It's quite possibly the best platformer based on a licensed property. So freakin' underrated.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but this game is the shit.

I'm not sure what happened to Konami. They used to be fantastic.

Edit: Actually, I see it's been mentioned a couple of times. Still worth the play.

Just another casual of video games going mainstream I'm guessing. Like you said, others have recommended it as well, so I'll definitely give it a look.

Also, has anyone here played the SNES version of Shadowrun? I've seen a little bit of it, and I wondered how it compared to the Genesis game.

Oh wow, that might clear things up. Still, they kinda make it seem like you're able to get past it with what you've got up to that point.

SNES version of Shadowrun was made by a seperate developer and is a different game. It's certainly worth a look if you're interested. Pretty awesome game, had a ton of fun playing it.

This thread rocks. Just recently picked up another SNES since I regretted selling mine off a few years ago. Man have the prices of these games gone up in just a few years though. I've currently got 16 games and still have quite a few I want but they are the more rare/expensive ones. Hindsight is 20/20 and I should have kept the one I had!

BTW I have mine hooked up via S-video to a 27" flat screen CRT and it looks fantastic.

So glad I've been collecting SNES stuff over the last 10+ years. Not saying I got everything cheap but not crazy expensive. Several of the games are my originals from the 90s, too. Learned my lesson after selling my NES stuff in the early 90s.

I use S-vid out on a Sony CRT and its great. I can also tell you S-vid works quite well on my Panasonic plasma. Not perfect but entirely playable and solid enough picture that it does not detract from the experience.

I would really like to try that component out. How much do they run on eBay?

If you like shooters check out UN Squadron.

I second this, UN Squadron is phenomenal. The gameplay, graphics, music: everything is amazing. Such an underrated classic.

The best thing about the Super Nintendo is the wide variety of quality games from different genres. I suggest playing only a few games at a time and jumping between.genres to maximize your enjoyment.

Super Nintendo is what Genesisn't :P

Most of my recommendations have already been posted, but I didn't see Final Fantasy IV (II on NA SNES) or Final Fantasy VI (III on NA SNES). Check those out if you haven't played them before.

Haven't played it personally, but I hear the Genesis version is superior.

If anyone is looking for some newer SNES controllers, take a look at these

I picked them up at one of my local game stores and I've been impressed with them.

They're made by Retrobit.

So to be clear, these are battery powered wireless controllers that work with a SNES?

Ahh one of the SNES games that have been with my system it's whole life along with Mario World, SFII, Tom & Jerry and Turtles in Time.

It's super hard!

Yes, they're 2.4ghz wireless controllers for the SNES. They run on two AAA's.

Just bought that double pack off Amazon.com for $32 (shipped to Canada). I don't play my SNES as much as I'd like since the cord on the controller is a major inconvenience.

It's not immediately obvious, though, is there an on/off switch, or do they automatically sleep/wake?

On the bottom left of the controller (under the d-pad) is an on-off switch. They will also go into sleep mode if they're not used (just pushing a button will turn them on).

The X/Y buttons are like the buttons on the US SNES controllers (they dip, just forgot the name).

I finished off Mario World after I picked them up and I didn't have a problem at all. No signal drops, the d-pad is responsive (which surprised me the most).

EDIT: That reminds me....should I try Super Ghouls and Ghosts....is it just going to drive me insane?

It's hard, but doable. Definitely harder than SCIV, but very much worth playing.

I found NES GnG more difficult (especially due to the late game glitches).

Super Metroid: One of the best games ever, fact.
Link to the Past: best Zelda game ever, fact.
TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (TMNT on Genesis/SMD is different)
Contra III: The Alien Wars (again, Contra Hard Corps on Genny is a different game, this is 100x better)
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (yes, Ghouls 'n Ghosts is different on Genesis/SMD)
Super Mario World: godly.

Just for starters. Super Famicom is my favourite console ever (Amiga+SFC+SMD was the best combo ever as a teenage kid back then, my best gaming memories are from those times). There's a billion must haves but what I mentioned above are essentials and I don't know if you like rpgs/jrpgs so I left them out.
Super Castlevania IV is awesome but Dracula XX is lackustre, if you want to play the real Rondo of Blood (which is great) you'll need a PCE-CD.
edit: if you have the means you must play The Secret of Mana together with two friends/gf+brother/whatev. 3 players SoM was a blast.

Well, you sold me! :D

Secret of Mana, Chroni Trigger, Final Fantasy lll, Super Metroid, $uper Mario All star, F-Zero, Contra lll, Super Punch Out, and A link to the past.

It's kind of funny how many remakes or collections of NES games there are on the SNES. I was playing Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, and basically everything is the same besides the music. It's funny that a lot of things haven't changed in the industry.

(Either way, NG is still awesome.)
