lttp: Splinter Cell: Conviction - now I know why they call him "5hitman"

No, it doesn't.

oh lol

of course it does. there's no reason to discuss it just because it vastly better and offesr much more stealth gameplay options while the stealth game Conviction doesn't.

I enjoyed the title myself. As a stealth action title, it feels great to play. I never really enjoyed the series trial and error gameplay so I found this to be quite an improvement. It's no Thief, but it's still a solid little game.

For an Unreal Engine 3 powered title, it's a sham since nearly everything else using that engine looks better and runs at 60fps on my PC.
It isn't Unreal Engine 3. It's using a heavily modified UE2 engine (which powered previous SC games).

Nice write-up. I've only played the demo, but it was enough to turn me off from buying the game, despite the fact that it can be found for super cheap this days. It seemed to be in line with the rest of Ubisoft's recent output, they sure are on a roll this gen~!!

HR offered more stealth gameplay options than Conviction? No it didn't. Not at all. Light and sound play a much, much bigger part in the stealth in Conviction, for example.

Seriously, you're kinda dumb.

Splinter Cell was my favourite new series from last gen. Sadly, I don't think I can be motivated enough to continue with this. I haven't even gotten very far.

yeah, I agree with light (not with sound) but you can fluently move around obstacles in DXHR while in Conviction you have to use clunky automatic system which didn't work properly most times as I remember.

Okay.

Conviction is a terrible game, for me at least, I played up until the soldier flashback and it was "ok" until then (actually it was pretty mediocre) but that flashback killed the game for with how terrible everything about it was, the shooting, the graphics, the feel, the performance, etc, everything was so bad I couldn't continue.

Agreed. DO is the best part of Conviction and very playable solo.

No offense, but that's a really harsh attitude. Deniable Ops has provided me with hours and hours of fun. I almost never touch the campaign any more. It's a huge part of the game to ignore.

As I said, the DO maps on realistic, no guns, no gadgets, no alerting anyone...
well worth the price of the game IMO. I still play the hell out of them.
I went through the story then never touched it again, no need since you can play the DO maps like the old games, nothing but stealth. In fact, the Infiltration missions demand it.

The DLC was great too. Love the new maps.

Edit- Ledsen, awesome thread! You know what's up.

Funny enough I got this game for free from a friend and played the 1st hour (maybe) of it before I stopped playing just last night. I don't think I can continue it. I would have preferred stealth, but I can play action. However, the action just wasn't working for me. I can't comment on how good it was since I didn't play much, just that it wasn't for me.

ETA - thanks to this thread though I will check out the DO

You saved yourself from pain. Conviction is the Invisible War of the Splinter Cell franchise.

Conviction was an awesome game and my favorite behind Chaos Theory. I was gad they changed up the gameplay and mechanics.

I've played all the major Splinter Cell games and I freaking loved Conviction. My favorite so far. I only wish I could have played Chaos Theory co-op before legacy Xbox Live went down.

I didn't really like the old SC games all that much, but Conviction was awesome. The Mark and Execute mechanic was really, really fun.

Don't care, the main game was compromised and that's all that really matters.

When the so called "side content" is better and longer lasting than the campaign, then no it's not all that really matters. But suit yourself, you're missing out on an amazing true Splinter Cell experience for no reason. Everyone should just play Deniable Ops and ignore the campaign if they don't like it.

100% agree

I really enjoyed it...

I see it's $20 on Games on Demand and the DLC is on discount. I think I'll go by GameStop and pick it up cheap.

I was kinda thrown off for a bit because the game was so much different from the rest of the series, but yeah, it's fun for what it is. I really liked the cover system and the mark and execute thingy.

The PC port is kinda crappy though

lol wut?

am I the only one who actually enjoyed the game?

Are you the only one that didn't read other posts? You could be.

Thanks to this thread I feel like playing the game again, thanks OP.

Awesome game that's severely underrated. When you get good at using stealth, last known position, mark and execute, etc..., the game makes you feel like a fucking boss.

The campaign was disappointing, but Hunter & Deniable Ops modes redeemed it. Some pretty amazing levels in there most of you never even got to.

Not only was it dumbed down, it was also offensive. Beating up a black man in the shadow of the Lincoln memorial? Really? Beating up a young woman for the sake of appearances? Again.. seriously?

I'm downloading the game now. I'm going to go through some SP tonight but I'm very curious about the MP since a lot of people are mentioning it. If anyone cares to join up for some games feel free to shoot me an invite.

Deniable Ops can be played solo, and I actually liked it more that way. Infiltration is a great challenge for the stealth gamer - if you are detected, you start over. Can't get more stealth-oriented than that.

I'm playing the DO maps right now.
Super fun. I love walking guys over to ledges and chucking 'em off.

I hate this game so much. As a SC fans it disappoints in so many ways.I think the best way to describe Conviction is a My First Splinter Cell for children. Severely dumbed down AI, extremely linear levels, removal of features of previous games (moving bodies, Lethal or Non-lethal, Pistol EMP, hacking, Night/Thermal/EMP vision) and Mark and Fucking Execute. Because nothing feels more like Splinter Cell than clearing a room full of 5 people in 2 seconds.

As said above I feel that DX:HR is a much better Splinter Cell game than Conviction. Being able to stun someone and then move them into a vent before someone patrolling sees felt so good. And hacking a terminal to deactivate cameras and turrets just felt so right. It truly is a worthy sequel to Chaos Theory.

No doubt DXHR is a great game, and it is better than Conviction, AND Mark and Execute is overpowered, but I did have a ton of fun with Deniable Ops. It's not as linear as the campaign. It's no Chaos Theory - I hate that you can't move bodies - but it does keep you on your toes and thinking quick. Like I said, Infiltration is awesome - you can't be seen or trip alarms AT ALL. Quite refreshing.

Honestly I think Conviction was baller as fuck, it just wasn't a "Splinter Cell" game, per se. It should have been a spin off, or a licensed Bourne game, or something.

It's an awful Splinter Cell sequel but as has been mentioned, pretending it's a 24/Bourne game makes it quite fun.

It sucks that you can't move bodies or whistle to get their attention, but you can wait and grab them as a human shield, walk them somewhere dark, then take 'em out.

I'll never forgive Ubisoft for what they did to Splinter Cell.

Removing Spy Vs Merc completely killed the game for me. I could have enjoyed the single player and co-op for what it was, but DONT fuck with Spy vs Merc. It simply is the best multiplayer you can find (IMO)

Lets hope SC:6 can bring it back, otherwise I wont even bother.

Pretty much this. It's still a good game though, i really enjoyed it.

Hmmm... so nobody else got the sense that the OP made this post after playing through just the first level? The tutorial?

In any case, I liked Conviction. Not as good as Chaos Theory IMO, but still pretty damn good. The direction for the game was to make Sam feel powerful instead of weak, and they accomplished that.

Run around guns blazing on the normal or harder difficulty mode, see how long you last. Even as you're killing everybody, you're still using cover, shadows, silent kills and (later in the game) gadgets to try and keep a low profile, even if you are dealing out death at a much faster (and less clunky) pace. Stealth is still there, it's just more about lethality than hiding cause Sam is such a pussy.

I understand that Conviction isn't for everyone, but it's a fun, well made game. And for those who really dislike the new direction, there are HD remakes of the originals coming out this holiday. Everybody wins.

Me and my friend borrowed it and played the co-op. We ran around punching dudes in the face, and were constantly in stealth.

It was fun as hell. I never played the SP though.

Interesting tidbit.

All UK Toys R Us stores were told to pull this game from sale today by the companies buyers. Sounds like a dispute with Ubisoft. No other Ubisoft titles are affected.

Actually since they didn't include Spies vs Mercs, nobody wins.
