Also, what about Voyager?

Voyager is a wildly inconsistent show and it never really fulfills its potential but it's a guilty pleasure of mine. There's plenty of good eps and several excellent ones. I like it much better than Enterprise because the characters are more interesting. You can always rely on the Doctor and Seven of Nine for a solid episode.

DS9 remains the best Trek show, for its main cast, superb supporting cast and its consistency.

Wtf is this? Enterprise was awful, and above TOS? Did you bang your head?

I can see where he is coming from, as important as TOS is, I would never recommend it to someone that didn't already know/appreciate it. The show obviously hasn't aged well and there is a large barrier of entry. As far as Enterprise goes, it's last two seasons were great and the best TV Trek outside of DS9/TNG (and the odd episode of Voyager).

Enterprise improved in the last two seasons, but I'd hardly call it great. Only good thing was the Romulan stuff. The augments stuff was boring, the Klingon stuff was stupid. And in the end, it's still a lousy cast of characters.

If anything, I'd say that the fourth season was weaker than the third, which at least had some interesting characterization and a good recurring guest star. Because of all the plot-based mayhem in the arcs, there wasn't really a lot of room for the characters (who are all boring to begin with) to do anything other than their jobs.

There was one episode he was in that I liked, when him and some other cadets were flying ships in formation and tried a maneuver that got one of them killed and they all had to deal with the repercussions.

Wesley after Season 1 was OK, once Gene was kicked upstairs and his role was minimized. But in the end, the story of a teen trying to get into Starfleet, like so many things, was done a lot better on DS9.

"The First Duty" is a great episode too.

I don't think TOS should be directly compared to the other 4 series. It was made in a very different time with different production values. The later 4 series also cared much more about building a coherent universe that made at least some sense.

oh god if you're that sold based on the first two seasons, the rest of the show is going to blow your fucking mind

there's like

four episodes worth watching in the whole first two seasons of TNG

that may be an exaggeration

but not by much

Do you think maybe it deserves a re-watch every year? I dunno, I got my blu rays about a year ago and have only watched them once, but I was thinking of doing an annual viewing.

Or do you find that every few years is more effective?

I still haven't watched mine, and I bought them when the UK set came out.

Man call me crazy but I even enjoyed the goofy holodeck ones where Picard would dress up

There were a few stinkers though no doubt. It gets better 3 onwards

Love when Ron Moore jumps on too and goes more in depth with the klingon stuff with worf

In the episode where they unfreeze those cryonics people from the 20th century, it's revealed that no humans in the Star Trek future drink alcohol, and that television doesn't exist. I call bullshit. Television, in one form or another, will always exist. 300 years in the future people only watch live plays? Nothing is filmed and then displayed on screen? No way man.

Edit: maybe the TV line was just a joke because Star Trek is a TV show and they were making fun of themselves.

Not quite that bad lol:

Encounter at Farpoint
Hide and Q
Datalore
11001001
Heart of Glory
The Arsenal of Freedom
Conspiracy
Where Silence Has Lease
Elementary, Dear Data
A Matter of Honor
The Measure of a Man
Contagion
The Royale
Time Squared
The Icarus Factor
Pen Pals
Q Who
The Emissary
Peak Performance

The Measure of a Man & Q Who are "best trek ever" contenders too. S1 & 2 are pretty rough though, code of honour is a top "worst trek ever" contender for sure.

BBC has been doing S1 and S2 episodes during the day...when I took holiday from work I say and watched them...I enjoyed them but it made me hungry for the later episodes/seasons

Still...so good

I've just begun Voyager. This last 8 months or so I've "officially" watched through every episode of Star Trek outside of the original. So far I've watched TNG, DS9, Enterprise, now I'm on Voyager. OP you're going to have alot of fun. One of the best years for TV I've had in my life.

I'm only on episode 12 of Voyager so I can't really judge it.

But my current rankings are TNG, DS9, Enterprise.

I actually enjoyed Enterprise unlike many Trek fans. Some of it notably the choice in aliens (my God the Andorians being just straight up blue with antennas, Orion and the stupid genetically altered multi-part) was pretty bad. But there was some good stuff and it felt more grounded or "authentic" in a loose sense since its entirely fiction. When compared to the other series. It had a lot of potential and I really liked some of the characters.

That's a good list. I'd also toss in "Where No One Has Gone Before" and gleefully remove "The Royale" for being an unwatchable piece of garbage. :p

holodeck

also you're on a ship full of the best and brightest in the Federation. They don't watch tv.

Yeah, that's not bad. I was disappointed when I first watched it as it's not close to as good as the trek book it's based off (The Wounded Sky). Without the traveller/Wesley nonsense it'd be a lot better too.

The Royale is like one of the most divisive eps ever lol.

The science fallacies don't help either, the planet's surface is colder then absolute zero and older then the universe because someone didn't bother fact checking (it's also weird rewatching now that fermat's last theorem has been solved, even though certainly not by his method).

But it's just a cheesy, super fun episode imo

Farpoint is pretty bad any time Q isn't onscreen, even though it's necessary. Hide and Q is alright I guess, but is probably the weakest Q episode in TNG. Datalore, too, is more important than it is good.

11001001 is completely legit, I agree. Heart of Glory never did anything for me. I don't even remember Arsenal of Freedom. Conspiracy was really good.

Now that you list the episodes out, Season 2 was better than I'd remembered, though Where Silence Has Lease was lame, the Icarus Factor was just okay, and The Royale was terrible.

And keep in mind, even with that list, those are the good ones out of 48 episodes

Glad you're enjoying the series, and I admit I'm kind of surprised you've enjoyed the first season so far.

I feel like the cast, crew, and show writers don't really get into their groove until season 3, then it's one of the best science fiction shows on television. Even so, it's a wonderful show and so different from OG Star Trek. Man, now I want to watch it again.

One of my go-to zen shows when really tired. I should start a thread regarding the deck building game I played as a teen.

The best of any Star Trek.

Watching it every week as a kid with my family was quite an experience.

My family got together with another family and watched every ep back in the day. After the show the parents would throw us kids in the yard/basement to play essentially unsupervised into the night. I didn't realize until much later that all the adults were looking to this gathering as an excuse to drink and have a good time - which was very uncharacteristic of both sets of family. Good times.

Prepare to have your mind blown if you're already impressed. There's some good stuff in seasons 1 an 2, but the overall quality quantum leaps starting from the third season.

Yes. I'm so sick of this "Seasons 1/2 are unwatchable" drivel that's been banded about. There's only one truly awful episode and that's "Code of Honor" (no superfluous u's in there thanks). If there are truly bad seasons of TNG I'd call them 6 & 7 since those two feel like the wheels failing off the wagon.

Season 2 is watchable enough. It's them getting the hang of things.

I will say that season 1 is nearly 100% crap though.

Skip anything with lwaxana troi and save yourself some time.

TNG used to be my favourite but my love of ds9 has grown so much now, quark is worth the price of admission alone.

"Haven" is okay but far from being good Trek. Everything else she's in (in TNG, at least) is garbage. I did kinda like her in DS9's "The Forsaken", though. They really toned down the character and Barrett's performance (especially in the turbolift) was respectable.

Half A Life says otherwise.

Personally I think Farpoint's debatable; I loved it as a kid, and it was a decent pilot, but I'm not sure it's held up all that well. Datalore, on the other hand, I think's total garbage. Again, I had fond memoires of it from my childhood but was shocked at how bad it was when I re-watched on DVD. It provides backstory and a set up for future events, but makes the entire command crew look like complete morons in the process.

I thought she gave a wonderful performance and it's one of her best episodes if not the best.

What happened to OP?
Nothing happened, I'm just working my way through the season slower than I anticipated. Just watched episode 12(The Hotel Royale) and 13, both fantastic episodes. Though 12 was definitely better. .

Annnnd Royale continues to be one of the most divisive trek eps ever.

You're on the right side of the divide though.

Wtf is this? Enterprise was awful, and above TOS? Did you bang your head?

I, personally, have a hard time getting through TOS. It's mostly because TOS episodes are paced very differently from the rest of the franchise. There's usually no B-plot in TOS so episodes feel like they drag on for a while. That and to be honest, TOS really isn't that great. Season 1 is hit or miss, usually more hit than miss. Season 2 is good. Season 3 is shit. Plus, TOS feels incredibly dated these days. You really have to be able to view it from the perspective of a 1960s television show.

The other reason I put Enterprise higher than it is because seasons 3 and 4 of Enterprise are legitimately great.

That's a good list. I'd also toss in "Where No One Has Gone Before" and gleefully remove "The Royale" for being an unwatchable piece of garbage. :p

The Royale is glorious fun cheese

I like The Royale too. It's weird af and cheesy but there's nothing offensive in the script and the actors have allot of fun.

Just got finished with Season 2. Man, that season finale was pretty disappointing. While reliving Commander Riker's "accomplishments" is certainly fun, can't believe they ended it on a glorified clip show.

My thoughts on the rest of the season are that there were 4-5 standout episodes, but otherwise it was okish. 1-2 episodes were just all around bad.

Everyone seems to agree that season 3 is when the show really picks up so I'm going in with healthy expectations.

EDIT: At least they had the decency to end the episode on a joke about Data not understanding a joke.

Season 3 is nice.

A Matter of Perspective is a guilty pleasure.

Yesterday's Enterprise is brilliant.

Sarek and The Defector are my favourites.

Enjoy.

From memory they ran out of budget and had to make back money on the finale by using old clips.

Season 2 ended on a clip show due to the fact there was a writer's strike in 88 and it not only lost them a proper season finale but cut down the episodes that season. You'll notice it went from 26 (then the norm for ep per season count) to 22.

And to be fair, they at least tried to come up with a creative way of doing it instead of just "remember when...."
