LTTP Star Wars Republic Commando

Been playing through this again, I bought it way back on the original Xbox and was blown away by it.

It still holds up today the squad based mechanics are brilliant and it's good to have AI team mates who can handle themselves, love the interaction between the four, particularly between Scorch and Sev.

I also like the fact that if you get hurt they will revive you, usually in these type of games if the main character goes down, you've had it, but the squad will fight on and come back for you.

This deserves a remaster or failing that a new game, there's solid gold potential here that is being allowed to go to waste.

One of my favorites on the OG Xbox, great game. Since Star Wars is coming back in full swing, maybe we can finally see a sequel!

Hmm I worry that since Disney have the rights, they'll have no interest in going for larger budget star wars games as they as a company have seemed to shy away from such things for their own properties. Would be nice though

Still holds up today. Got one of my favorite intro sequences in all of video games as well....perfect melding of narration and (semi-playable!) montage. Chills every time.

It is a shooter that had a lot of good ideas, specifically the squad mechanic. Very good, very fun concept.
Unfortunately it is otherwise a bit meh game, with low powered, uninteresting weapons, short campaign, kind of boring levels, lack of real story (it is just a collection of ops the Delta Squad takes part in). It is not a bad game by any means but it is kind of average.
Wonderful music though. Vode An especially is a great track.
EDIT And i'll echo the above poster, the intro sequence is great.

A shame the sequel got canned, and a shame the squad mechanic was never used in any other game (i know of, anyway).

Not a good Star Wars game...simply a good game, period. :D

Surprisingly competent squad-based shooter, I really liked it back in the day.

I loved the night vision effect the game uses in dark areas, the game needed more cool filters like that.

I had the game on xbox and loved it, I own it on steam but not played it much since.

I don't think they'd make a sequel. If anything they'd probably have it focused on the new era Stormtroopers which I wouldn't mind either. But I think they're done with the Clone Wars for a while.

I'm in the minority when it comes to Republic Commando in that I found it to be one of the most repetitive shooters I've ever played. After the first two hours, you've seen it all. The weapons, the squad mechanics, the firefights - I don't remember there being anything that really surprised or delighted me in the late game.

By the closing hours, the novelty of the game had worn off - the HUD, the squad member chatter, the general gritty Star Wars-yness - was great, but it couldn't sustain the bullet sponge enemies and repetitive combat scenarios (do this in a hangar. now do it two more times!). And that's a strong criticism to make for what is still a short ~6-7 hour game.

I think its biggest problem was that it had no unique identity in terms of actual combat, mostly because the squad mechanics were paper thin. It didn't have the sandbox nature of Halo, nor did it drift towards the setpiece-a-minute design of modern shooters. Strip away the Star Wars nature of it, and you're not left with a whole lot.

I think it's a game that's begging for a sequel to add variety, depth, and ideas.

The only negative with the game was how many shots it takes to bring down like anything. It just was odd playing a star wars games where even battle droids took like half a mag to put down.

Really wish they'd make a sequel to this. It was surprisingly fun and squad based FPS's with this level of control over them is still rare.

Fantastic game, though I agree with the damage output and campaign length issues.

Would love a spiritual successor. Ya hear that, Mouse?

Has the bump mapping bug in modern gpus been fixed?, it was kind of unplayable on pc because of that.

Set bump mapping to low and you can play it on any GPU. I'm not 100% sure but i think med and high settings do work on my laptop (GT630M). If you tolerate the lack of bump mapping.

Amazing game. have great memories of playing it just before the release of Episode 3

It looks really bad without bumpapping, this game and Pandora Tomorrow are the reason why i will always have an original Xbox around, at least until someone fixes them on pc.

Super Battle Droids in this game are absurd bullet sponges. It's almost comical how many shots to the face they can take while still slowly advancing.

Loved this. Felt real good, and the squad stuff was tight. Only real complaint is that some enemies take forever to kill. They went a little overboard there.

Agreed. The Mouse doesn't seem to want to revisit much in the Prequel universe but maybe with new era (old skool?) Stormtroopers.

Brought this game of GOG last week to co-incide with their LucasArts special!

I remember playing a demo of it back when it first got released...but then finding out it was getting a re-release on GOG I decided to buy it!

Just a dam shame it doesn't have from what I have read here...xbox 360 controller support!

Picked this up in the Star Wars humble bundle, had been wanting to play it for years, so thanks for posting that.

I'm about halfway through and I'm enjoying myself, but dude, these enemies are bullet SPONGES, and the amount of ammo they give you is criminal. Definitely lessening my enjoyment of the game. Unless I'm missing something in regards to how I'm supposed to be killing these big dudes.

Its one of my favorite games of all time, it really needs a sequel.

But if anybody's thinking of reading the tie in novels, don't. They're average books, but have almost nothing to do with the game or even the premise.

Oh, absolutely. After all that mess, too.

If it's any consolation, the game is no longer canon, which means that Sev was never left behind. Of course, that could change if they decide to revisit and bring back elements of the story.

These characters are immortalized though, thanks to TCW.

I actually liked that, it makes them actually intimidating instead of just swole battle droids like they are in everything else

One way to get around the Bump Mapping issue is to play on an Intel GPU. Its worth even a drop in performance as without it the game looks really plain.

They tell you that you need to focus fire on those guys, and they mean it, dammit :P

Love this game. What's this about about the bump mapping not working? I've got it set to high and it looks... okay, considering it's from the OG Xbox days.

There's a lot to like about it, but my biggest complaint is that the main repeating blaster feels wimpy as fuck. In SW, blasters are generally killing things in one or two shots and each bolt seems very powerful. In RC, to make it more like standard FPS games, they give you a weak, very rapid firing gun by default. I think this more than anything makes it feel less authentic, if that makes sense? An odd thing to complain about perhaps, but when combined with the Super droids it feels like the enemies are barely reacting to me a lot of the time. I don't mind that they're difficult opponents to be feared, I just wish it was for other reasons (like being very deadly) rather than being ultra tanks.

I got the impression the reason they made everything tanky more than quick and deadly was to incentive giving your squad orders, otherwise ordering your squad to focus fire on something would take more time than killing it yourself. I can understand the complaint, but I think it really fits the squadplay of the game.

If they remade it more in a ghost recon style where there's a bit more stealth and you had greater tactical variety in squad commands and positioning and such I think it could work well without bullet sponge enemies - although you could definitely still have bosses that were tough as nails.

Definitely a remaster I would buy. Redone textures and lighting etc would look beautiful.

I would so buy up an Unreal Engine 4 remake of the game.
Higher res textures and some added effects is about as good I would expect because I imagine the original High Poly models are lost.

I wonder if i still have the disc for this game.

I was always interested in playing this, actually. Thanks for informing me about it being in the Humble Bundle. Totally got it.

Weird thing about that - I remember that being my main complaint about the game - otherwise it's an all time favorite. I played it on the PC first time around. What's bad about the gun is it seems to have no recoil animation, and it just looks like it spits out lasers.

Here's what I'm talking about on PC: notice how it looks like it's skipping animation frames. Sometimes the gun jerks back, sometimes it doesn't.

It's even worse on Xbox. Sometimes it just doesn't animate at all.

However, I was recently poking around videos on the game out of curiosity, and found some footage where the kickback was very obviously and deliberately animated. I can't find it off the top of my head. No idea if it was a mod or what, but it seriously looks like the game shipped with a messed up firing animation for the rifle - which is weird, because nearly every other gun animates pretty well (especially that trandoshan shotgun, mmm).

You have to push the action button while aiming at an enemy to focus fire on them. Otherwise you'll shoot at them all day. And use grenades against Super Battle Droids, especially the green ones. Whatever they're called.
