LTTP Star Wars Republic Commando

I'm surprised that more shooters haven't tried to copy the squad of distinct, memorable characters, and the often hilarious banter. A lot of shooters try so damn hard to make you care, but Republic Commando succeeds effortlessly in making you love your squad.

Also, especially for the time, the animation in Republic Commando is pretty amazing. One particularly cool touch is that your squadmates have special melee finishers for certain enemies, my favorite being the one where a squadmate grabs an enemy with a shotgun by his arm and shoots him point blank with his own weapon.

I like ordering commands just to see the hand signs.

One of the better SP focused FPS ever, i loved interaction with the squad.
Still dont understand why they didnt made a sequel, especially after COD 4's console FPS boom.

Mu favourite part is when your in the Republic cruiser hangar and the Trade Federation ship just drops out of hyperspace and starts sending over landing parties. So tense.

For the best part of a decade before they closed, LucasArts were in a constant state of turmoil. They were frequently changing management and staff. We just had the longest console cycle ever and they only managed to put out 2 Force Unleashed games and Fracture. They were in such a state they couldn't even outsource a sure-fire hit like Battlefront 3.

Such a shame, I really hope EA doesn't fuck this up. I need my SW fix.

What's best way to play the game? OG Xbox or PC?
I remember hearing PC version wasn't great on newer OSes (I think on Rebel FM?).

I didn't even realise that it was Raphael Sbarge who was scorch!

Top game and had it for OG xbox when it first came out.
Loved the emphasis on the helmet view.

I am a sucker for stormtrooper based fun.

Bang on, OP. This game was awesome on OG Xbox. I think I'm gonna get it on Steam.

It's also in the Humble Bundle, definitely worth a look.

Such a great game, I have very fond memories of it. The blood splatters on the helmet and the little helmet wipers were brilliant. :lol

I really should replay it. What I wouldn't give for a remaster.

Yup, I went with the bundle. Some really good games for $12!

Disappointed to find I can't use an Xbox controller though :(

I used to like the little animation of the windscreen wiper removing the blood from your helmet such a cool little touch, also the end of the genoshia mission with the bomb diffusal was hard as hell

I just got to
Kashyyyk
and HOLY SHIT is this game good. I love the tactical elements, and the fact that Delta Squad actually has personality. And the game really does a great job of putting you in situations where the odds are against you, but if you utilize everything at your disposal you can end up feeling like a real badass Clone Trooper.

My favorite line from Scorch so far: "Yayyy, Wookie life-debts for everybody!"

Also, I've heard that
Delta Squad is in an episode of The Clone Wars.
Does this kind of make Republic Commando canon by association?

I remember renting this game back when it came out. Super fun and it has one of the greatest theme songs in all of gaming. I remember reading that LucasArts wanted to do a sequel called Imperial Commando but I don't know if that was a rumor or not.

I think it was true but they scrapped it before it even entered production. An Imperial Commando book actually came out as a sequel to the Republic Commando books.

Spent an hour in the game today, never played before.

It's boring so far. Feels like a bad Halo clone in the Star Wars universe. The level is very linear, repetitive enemies and objectives. Combat is not fun at all.

Is there anything better later?

Yes, you later go play Dark Forces, cos that's the good Star Wars FPS. Edit: the Nightdive remaster was ok (man, so glad they got Powerslave done so good, most of their stuff isn't as) but I didn't like the new graphics, especially the cut scene stuff, so The Force Engine (TFE) source port was my choice.

Republic Commando could have been cool if it tried to be like Rainbow Six 3 or something like that contemporary, but yeah, it was a miss with some nice premise and style that ultimately falls flat without good combat or squad management or anything much to it with how scripted and linear it is.

The first level was the worst imo.

I liked the game, specially the fact that's a Star Wars game with a bit of a darker tone which is something we don't get at all nowadays.

But yeah if you think it's boring already just move on, might not be the game for you.

Ok, one less game from my backlog!

If you want cool squad games with a nice balance of tactics and action, check out both the Rainbow Six Vegas games and the Brothers in Arms games. The later's specially cool if you watched and loved Band of Brothers.

A totally underrated game, by the way

Got on PC back in the day. Hell of joy doing the missions and directing the other guys

It was this, Far Cry, Half Life 2 and Doom 3. Also, Halo 2, MGS 3 and Metroid Prime 2 on consoles. Holy shit, what a time
