So despite loving the original movie, I have never bothered to watch more than a few random episodes here and there of SG1. Now, thanks to the power of Amazon prime, I am starting a watch.

Past the halfway point of season 1, and so far the show is entertaining, but mostly entertainingly bad. Every episode so far seems like a knock off of a early TNG episode (which were mostly knock of original Star Trek episodes.). I am continuing with the promise that it gets better, and becomes the good entertaining, not the bad entertaining.

So far the only negative is "Fire And Water" where we get to see outside Cheyenne Mountain, and that it's not Colorado Springs. :( But apparently Colorado Springs got them back by making the NOT Stargate fountain at the base of the Mountains.

There have been a few episodes I've enjoyed outside laughing at it. Enemy Within, The Torment of Tantalus, and The Nox (Hey Kids! It's Quark!).

It gets better as it goes on. I liked the series because it took all the parts about the film that I loved (the alien cultures and the rule through tech) and runs with it, while abandoning the regular Emmerich/Devlin cheese.

The show never achieves greatness like TNG or BSG would do, but it never really has a truly horrible period either. It was consistently entertaining.

The closest the show ever gets to greatness is Window of Opportunity (season 4), Heroes, and Lost City (both from season 7).

EDIT: And as it goes on, Michael Shanks makes the character of Daniel Jackson his own instead of doing a James Spader impersonation like he did for the first season.

First season is ass.

Gets better, though. Part of it is the quality of the writing goes up, part of it is that it stops taking itself so entirely seriously all the time.

Those are all favorites, but they fall behind Abyss for me.

The show had its highs and its lows...but I loved it. Admittedly, 9 and 10 were more of a sequel show once RDA left.

Peak SG-1 and early SG:A were pretty great.

Storywise the biggest negative so far is Apophis. I hope he's offed soon, or at least get a new actor. The guy is just terrible.

Gets uniformly better the second season onward, like others have mentioned. I agree that it has very few "highs", but it is very consistent.

Love stargate.

And yes, gets much better after season 1. I love Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping.

I think most will agree that Window of Opportunity is a great damn episode though. Right?
You could show that to anyone without any knowledge of the show and it still works.

I have bad news for you...

On the plus side, better villains do come along, and the mythology gets expanded a LOT.

It's never quite as good as the best of Trek, but it eventually becomes a really fun adventure show in its own right.

though I will say Window of Opportunity is a better comedy episode than any attempt Trek ever managed.

Don't worry about that! Even if he is the main villain, there isn't extreme focus on him. As someone already said, the lore gets greatly expanded, and things become amazing.

God I love stargate. IMO it's the best Star____ franchise. Screw you Wars and Trek.

S1 is rough. I rewatch Stargate all the time, but very rarely does any of season 1 get played, so that should sort of tell ya.

But it does get better, possibly peaking in season 4, and by that point it has fleshed out enough of its universe to be an entertaining watch clear through the end of the 7th season or so.

Keep watching, all it does is get better for the next 6 seasons. If you like the movie and the ideas behind it, you will be entertained. But at season 8 and beyond, it seems only the few of us that are hardcore SG fans enjoyed those last 2 seasons.

Gets loads better.

There But For The Grace Of God - which is very near the end of Season 1 - is the series Best of Both Worlds - as in its the turning point when quality increases dramatically.

Fantastic series, but end with season 8 and watch Atlantis if you wish to continue with stargate. Was originally intended to end with 8, the Ori stuff in 9-10 is all bad filler.

Any one in here also like Universe? I enjoyed it, it's a shame it got ended early. I loved Rush.

I thought Atlantis was mostly rubbish. Never bothered with watching a single episode of Universe because of how rubbish I thought Atlantis was.

I love SG1. Fucking one of the best Sci-fi's I've seen. I just love the relationships between the characters, that was the best part about the show.

I would have Jaffa Kree'd the shit out of Amanda Tapping and Teryl Rothery if ya know what I mean!

Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, and Stargate SG-1 Season 9 and 10 are decent spinoffs.

The last few episodes of Universe are incredible though. Not just incredible Stargate episodes but incredible sci-fi stories in their own rights.

I thought Atlantis started strong. Those episodes at the start,
like the one with the old Elizabeth Weir from the other timeline in the stasis pod.
That stuff was neat, but they just went buckwild. Show got crazy, Wraith were a terrible 'enemy', fucking rebel Asgards came out of nowhere, and borrowing replicators from SG1 and bringing them into the Pegasus galaxy just seemed lazy as fuck.

The idea pool just seemed dry at that point and the show was shuffling staff like mad. Elizabeth gone, Amanda Tapping in.... Amanda Tapping out, Woolsey in... Doctor dead, Doctor cloned and back, Rainbow Francks gone... Kaley from Firefly out of fucking nowhere (I didn't mind that one) Ugh.

I just finished Hathor, and it was hilarious.

Ive also already referred to Emancipation as "Angel One Two"

Haha yeah. SG-1 season one does really parallel TNG season 1.

At least SG1 builds up to the brilliant "Within the Serpents Grasp" - whereas poor TNG shat "The Neutral Zone" onto our screen as reward for putting up with the whole first series.

Replicator bugs were pretty boss. Still prefer the Goa'uld as the villains for SG-1. Wraith were the best of all series.
