LTTP: Super Mario Galaxy - wow this game is pretty good

Haha thats what you would think but I've really not had much interest in 3D Mario. SMW was like the peak for me and just never had much desire to play the 3D ones. I knew they were good but never really gave them a chance.

Figure what?

You don't have to always point at the screen. Only when you need to interact.

It could have been even better without that pointless icing of motion controls on top.
it really doesn't add anything beside making some basic actions a bit more annoying to perform.

You dont need to keep pointing at the screen while having your hands on mid air. you can rest your hands on your lap or whatever and just aim from there when necesary (you can aim all the time with no problems really) . I think most of us figured this out after a few hours with a Wiimote, makes it much much easier. (It does depend off your setup though, as you don't want anything blocking the Wiimote from the sensor bar if your hands are too low)

I've never understood how people think Galaxy 2 is better. The pacing is universally worse, it seems to think 2D sections in a 3D game are novel, and quite often there isn't even any platforming (Boulder Mario and the drill, pushing snowballs around).

I was actually sort of drifting away games prior to Galaxy. I probably wouldn't be playing games now without it.

Same here, I only bought a Wii because of Brawl, and while it was fun, it wasnt the best thing ever. I tried TP, it was great but still I wasnt interested on replaying. I casually bought SMG2, childhood is back, into gaming again.

Super Mario Galaxy thread?

I'm just going to keep evangelizing Dolphin.

The level design is amazing at times... but not in levels like this one. When the stages don't have any interesting gimmicks in SMG, they're inferior to those of SM64 and SMS.

One of the best parts about emulating the Galaxy games through Dolphin - beyond the mouth-watering visuals brought upon by vastly increased rendering resolution - is that you can use a regular gamepad the whole way through and it plays majestically.

I would love this game so much if I didn't have to use the Wii remote and nuncheck. But my hatred of that control scheme really dampens my enjoyment of the game.

Super Mario Galaxy is a masterpiece and the sequel is even better. Both are way better than 64 and Sunshine. God, Sunshine was my favorite game back them but now I can see it for what it is: a boring game. Everytime I give it another chance I'm so bored I need to play Galaxy. Screw exploration

It makes sense from a game design perspective, from an inmersion one and makes thing a bit more physical and fun. That's the way to implement new controlling methods and interface.

How do pull-stars work? Second analog stick? Seems less intuitive but functional. Can't really think of anything else that would matter much aside from gathering star bits, and that's usually not too important.

It works well, as the right analog stick is what is used to aim a crosshair in shooters, and you can toggle it such that the pointer only appears when you hold a certain button (like one of the triggers).

You'll figure that one out eventually

I found that if I slouch on the couch, and rest the hand with the Wii remote on my crotch, everything works nicely, I'm comfortable, and I look questionable to boot with a plastic white, star-bit gathering, electronic penis of power.

Well, that's the theory, but it really doesn't work that well.
In fact, as Zeliard already pointed, mapping some of these actions on a normal gamepad with Dolphin makes things better rather than worse in most cases.
And when you cross some of these rare cases where it doesn't work that well, you usually can't help but think "I would have enjoyed this game even more without having to do some of these things with the cursor/tilt/whatever". Or at least that was the case for me.

Controversial opinion incoming: This is probably my least favourite Mario.

I can't think of any memorable galaxies. The ones I do like good egg galaxy is perhaps only for the music. At the latter half of the game, I felt more compelled to beat it than actually enjoy what's going on (I think there were days I didn't even want to play it!). Powerups weren't much fun (boo mario and spring mario?). The dragging "Mario around different stars" really lowered my enthusiasm.

Oh, and I didn't find the graphics special. My first thought was "original Xbox game" like Conker or some really late Gamecube games (I always get SSX on Tour vibes).

If you think SMG looked like a PS3 games SMG2 will really make you think that, to me atleast theres a noticeable visual upgrade from the 1st game and it just looks stunning.

One of my favorite games of the generation. SMG and its sequel are a one-two punch that can't be beat. I'm hoping for an HD remake of both games for the Wii U. The games are already amongst the most gorgeous I have ever seen. Them being in HD would cause my eyeballs to melt.

I'd also like to see and SMG3 that utilizes the gamepad in fantastic ways.

It's the VR dilemma basically. It makes everything in some game genres so much inmersive... but damn! Why do i need to have this contraption slapped to my face and make all those head movements to look around?

The sacrifice this game demands from the player is to change the posture to some extent when aiming or making a motion controlled activity like rolling the ball around (or DevilRay racing). I can't really think of an instance in which i could blame the controls for not having my way with the game. Having the hands separated an resting instead of warping them around a traditional 2 handed controller felt better most of the time.

Visuals in dolphin, godlike as they are, don't compensate what you lose when playing with the 360 controller as i did some time ago.

My point is, this game is not a good showcase on why motion gaming sucks when there are tons of other candidates that handled them really poorly and not in enriching ways.

Art direction is insane. Probably the most visually striking game created by Nintendo and when up resed doesn't look outmatched by what the PS3/360 generation offered.

Every time one of these threads pop up, there's a dozen people saying, "yeah, I really liked it, but because of [super tiny minor detail] wasn't up to my arbitrary taste, so I don't think they're that great at all."

The level design blows my mind every time I play it. Variety, creativity, feedback, using the technology in smart ways, the game has it all.

Hum, no, it's not the same thing at all.

The problem isn't what sacrifice the game demands to adapt to the controls, it's more about what it gives back in return, which is pretty much nothing worthwhile.
Regardless of playing it with a Wiimote or a gamepad I would have gladly made without collecting star fragments at all, for instance. And not because "it made my arms tired" but because I didn't find that part fun or engaging, it just distracted me [sort of, considering I didn't pay it much attention, after all] from more enjoyable things.

My point is, this game is not a good showcase on why motion gaming sucks
No, but it's a good showcase on why forcing motion controls in a game that did mighty fine without them is pointless, if not even harmful.

One of the few games I've ever played that completely and utterly surpassed the immense hype I had for it going in. The first hour of Galaxy provided me with the most joy I've ever experienced with a game in my life.

What's even more amazing is that the sequel is somehow BETTER! Like, a LOT better. And that is really, really saying something.

So instead of quickly and effortlessly collecting star bits by pointing at them, you get to stop, move your thumb off of the action buttons and over to the joystick, and move a slow, plodding cursor around the screen to accomplish in several seconds what the Wiimote allows you to do instantaneously? You have a funny definition of the word "best".

yeah zeliard f you and ur dumb controller

The two galaxies are my favourite games of the 7th generation. I'll also second the comment about the graphics, I've always thought the two games look like PS3 games at 480p with poor textures; it's amazing what Nintendo did with the Wii's limited technology.

You forgot to mention hurricanes and locusts for a more dramatic effect.

Everyone loves this game and yet today a lot of people are adamant that Nintendo are all of a sudden incompetent or something. It's like dude they make the best games ever. Galaxy is phenomenal. It wasn't long ago. They've still got it.

If they didn't decide to gate levels through starbits, I would have never bothered collecting them. It's mindless busy work.

There were more game mechanics than just collecting star bits with the lightning-fast IR pointer. The pointer via IR is far superior in speed, accuracy and usability to the pointer via analog stick.
