LTTP : Tales of Graces f

Best combat system in the series. Nonstop, all combo, don't get a fuck, countering all day long to chain more combo.

Story though, you want to beat the naive nature out of Asbel because he could've prevented 90% of the problem. Same with Richard, such angst.

Shrug, Sophie and Cheria character make up for both of them though.
And the true ending actually has a good and concrete ending.

Hmm...I may have to reconsider then. lol. Depends if I feel Taled-out after Vesperia. or I could go right to Xillia

In the end it really depends what you consider important. Vesperia is kinda unique in a way that it's a solid overall package. That's why many people say it's 'the last good Tales game"

Graces F had best combat, but everything else falls short. If you consider story/characters as the most important part, you will most likely not like the game. If you consider battle the most important, you will most likely love it in some way.

Xillia is mediocre version of Vesperia with lack of extra/post-game contents. It has better character/story/graphics/music than Graces F, but not by much.

The Xillia games are just not very good Tales games. The gameplay is dull and going through the paces, characters aren't interesting, the world is bland (don't even get me started on the recycled assets in Xillia 2). The story is something else. It is really REALLY bad! It was the most convoluted piece of shit I've played. So much so that I started skipping all dialog halfway through! It is terrible! The combat system was ok but again this was bogged down by far too many systems going on in the background and because it's just too overly complicated to learn everything I just ended up mashing the x and o buttons. It was boring.

Story

Even the story seems better so far than Xillia. It's not amazing by any stretch but at least it's not covoluted in mumbo jumbo nonsense with sprites and other nonsense (so far) and you feel more for the characters especially with events happening early on. Hopefully the story remains strong throughout but I haven't progressed far enough to say. Tales games aren't known for their great storytelling but I really hated Xillia's story to the point I actually disliked the game because of it and found it offensive. This one seems serviceable so far. I've only just reached halfway through chapter 2. Voice overs are what you'd expect and the skits are interesting and funny at times.

Holy hyperbole, Batman. The Xillia hate in this thread is overwhelming. I enjoyed both Graces F and Xillia 1 for different reasons, so I don't really see the need to put down another game to elevate another one. They all have their appeal. I think Xillia 2's story is an atrocity but there are people who though that game's over the top drama counted as quality writing.

It's fair to dislike Xillia's story. But a boring world, really? Where you have Auj Oule cities based on central Asia and cities like Fennmont and then
Trigleph in Elympios?
That's way more variety than I've seen in most Tales games, and I've played through most of the series. Graces' three countries are basically European country, desert country, and snowy country. I'm confused as to how this adds up to a better world than Xillia.

Xillia's story also isn't nearly as complex as you make it out to be. Rieze Maxia has spirits. People live symbiotically with these spirits and can use "magic" called spirit artes. A new technology threatens to disturb this balance by killing spirits and unbalancing this symbiotic relationship. Really not that hard to understand.

I love Graces' cast for how quirky and ridiculous they are, but I don't see how they're necessarily better than Xillia's cast. At least Xillia's cast exhibited more than just black/white good and evil. And honestly, I really think Alvin is one of the best written characters in the series because the consequences of his actions actually catch up with him and he has to deal with them instead of the story writing off anything bad he ever did
like with Yuri
.

And you admit you haven't even gotten that far in Graces yet you're ready to declare it superior to Xillia in any way? You're free to enjoy Graces, but the Xillia hate is really excessive.

Different Tales games do things better than others. Xillia 1 and 2 the worst in the series as someone in this thread yet? Don't kid yourselves. Go play Tales of the Tempest and tell me that either Xillia is worse. Yeesh.

In any case, the first Xillia wasn't even completed which is why the game has so many flaws and the story drops off at the end. Xillia is in my top 3 in the series for its ambition, but unfortunately it seems that Bamco can't be bothered to finish games these days. Xillia 2 was created specifically because they didn't finish Xillia 1.

You mention a character as "worst" from Tales of the Abyss and don't mention Luke, the worst protagonist in history.

Because protagonists that change and feel bad about their actions are "whiny," right? I mean, Luke was only responsible for
the death of 14,000 people
. What a whiner. Kid should get over it. I bet Yuri wouldn't have cared if that had happened to him, am I right?

Tales feels like it's veering between still trying to tell an ok-to-interesting story with decent-to-actually-good characters and pandering to the worst jrpg/otaku garbage that japan has been churning out for the last five+ years.

Frustrating, because Tales has some really fun gameplay, but the candy coating has been pretty awful lately.

The worse part is that the Tales series combat is degrading on itself trying to reinvent the wheel.
ToX and ToZ paring up combo crap, limited action points and AWFUL non-linkable skills.
They don't want to admit that ToG is the best, and they can't go back to it anymore because it is in their mission statement to reinvent their combat system for each new game.

They seriously needs to drop the pairing mechanic in the future. They had 3 games to prove that it doesn't work well.

But ToG isn't the best.

It's ToD PS2. :3

Seriously though, they really could afford to not try to reinvent the wheel everytime. Vesperia is one of the best in the series because it's a really polished version of their PS2 Tales.

Graces still has the best gameplay of any Tales games as far as I'm concerned. It more than makes up for what I feel is a lackluster story overall.

This was the game that burned me out of the series.

I do want to try this series again when Zestiria hits Steam. Nothing from both Xillia's interests me in playing them however.

Luke is the only Tales MC that i remember that it's not the classic do-gooder; even Yuri suffers of the same. Luke is an ass, mean-spirited jerk. But his development through the game is exactly what Abyss is about.
For that, it's one of my favorites Tales lead characters.

Pascal is the reason to even play Graces (aside, obviously, of the combat)

Yuri is the only tales lead who is willing to spill blood when the need arises. He maybe a do gooder but he'll kill you in cold blood to further his goal.
