LTTP: Tales of Vesperia

I picked up a copy from Amazon during the whole December deal thing and finally just got to pop it in. I'm only a few hours in but so far I love the presentation I'd love to see a Final Fantasy IV-VI in this fashion with an overworld like DQVIII's.

Characters are ok so far but a little cliche (ok, she's the innocent bimbo healer and he's the rebellious tough guy with a heart, now where's the white knight.....). Though the size of Estelle's head sorta freaks me out.

I like the idea of the side conversations that you get by pressing the back button. Though the presentation/animation sometimes look like something out of MS Paint at times. Voice acting is pretty good.

So far the battle system has been fun but with a few minor annoyances (IE: if I hit guard the dude should guard right away, not when it's convenient).

So a few questions, should I go out of my way to fight enemies or stick to the road, as I find if I stick to the road I can get most places without having to fight. Is this a game that requires a lot of grinding? Is there anything else I should know/not miss?

If you like to collect achievements there are special things/sequences you have to do during certain boss fights.

Yuri gets better as the game goes along and Estelle is a garbage healer imho just stick with items.

Doesn't really require grinding but you'll want to if you plan on crafting a lot of the items/weapons/etc

The games awesome, i enjoyed the fighting so i did it often. The games not really hard but you dont want to avoid to many fights cause it can creep up on you.

My favourite JRPG this gen - I need to get around to replaying it soon using my GRADE.

You'll be able to beat the game without grinding too.

And yet another reminder that I need to pop this game in.
That said, didn't we just have this thread 2 or 3 weeks ago?

Don't really need to grind, although battles blow by so quickly it doesn't really hurt.

Other than a couple of boss battles (most early on) it never becomes difficult, though.

Loved it - easily my favourite JRPG on current consoles. And I was surprised, as I hated Tales of Symphonia. I attribute most of that to the characters, as Vesperia actually has ones that aren't (too) annoying. And even Karol waffles between endearing and annoying.

As with all Tales games, I gradually lost interest as the game goes on and on...and on and on and on. Vesperia is amongst the best of the Tales games I've played, but again I could not muster the interest to finish it, it just gets so dreary.

It's the stereotypical JRPG, but done really well. Competent and polished in almost every area. Pleasant to look at and Judith=<3. Great combat system.

And for some inexplicable reason, no PS3 release yet in America.

It's not a game that requires a lot of grinding, but you shouldn't skip out on battles that often.

I hated the game, poor characters and even worse voice acting...ticks all the boxes as a stereotypicial JRPG.

?

I thought the characters were pretty good- compared to most other JRPGs even surprisingly good.
Yuri was a fantastic lead- in my opinion one of the best lead characters in a JRPG ever - and on top of it the story wasn't too shabby either up until the last third (the second part was great, the third...not so much).

I'm in the same boat, just started a few days ago now I'm like 6 hours in.

So Far

+ The side convos make it seem like you're actually travelling with a group

+ Battles are fun and don't take too long

+ IMO the presentation jumps between good and fantastic.

- So damn cliche

- My dog can voice act better (Also, I just beat ME2)

- Save the intro, not a single memorable tune thus far

Overall, it's shaping up to be a fun game though. Haven't played a Tales of game in a long while

Why the complaints about voice acting? They were mostly done well.

And it has Troy Baker as the lead. That invalidates your claim, good sir. GOOD DAY.

I love JRPGs, but this is the most cliche boring(gameplay and story) game i've played in a while. It's so sterotypical. My brother loves it though...

I think this is supposed to be the appeal of Tales of... games. Maybe it doesn't work if that's not your thing.

Yeah. It might just be me, but I kinda like all the cliché elements.

Honestly, I think the Tales games have the best combination of characters, pacing, and gameplay in the genre. For me, it's like every other JRPG has some sort major design or gameplay flaw that carries through the whole experience and sours it. I don't have that problem with the Tales games.

Great game, my favorite traditional jRPG of this gen.
The characters are pretty typical but some of the stuff that Yuri does is really cool. I didn't really do any grinding during the game, I would clear most enemies in the way but unless I was harvesting ingredients I needed I wouldn't grind.
Estelle is kind of annoying, so is Karol. I renamed him "Dipshit" which was pretty funny. I liked the pipe smoking dog and the ladies man though.

I don't get the complaints about voice acting. I really can't think of a single JRPG where it's done better, and not a whole lot of games in any genre that put it to shame.

Either way, though, great game. It's definitely head and shoulders above pretty much every other JRPG of the last five years.

I don't understand all this Vesperia hate. I believe those people never played a Tales of game before because Tales of Eternia and Symphonia is pretty much the same. The day I bought the game, I was expecting something like the previous games and I was right.

With the exception of Legendia, the Tales' game are pretty solid. I really enjoy them.

Although the character designs aren't my favorite in Vesperia, the game is still probably my 2nd best Tales game. Symphonia is still probably my favorite because of the fond memories playing it on the Gamecube, being the only JRPG available for the system at the time.

I love Vesperia's art style and visuals, like a playable anime. Pretty awesome!

I too would love to see a DQ game with this quality in its visuals. And although it'd never happen, a Final Fantasy game, maybe a spin-off, with cel-shaded Vesperia type of visuals would be pretty awesome too.

I enjoy this game. I've shelved it for a couple different games but I'm about to enter the final dungeon (well doing sidequests first).

It's tough at times. I feel stupid but I can't figure out how to do any of the super moves. I think the burst artes is what I'm referring to. The anime style one done during Over Limit. I've read and re-read all the instructions and finally gave up.

Anyway, this game is fun and I actually enjoy the characters and voice acting. Really hoping the JP PS3 version comes across seas...

I've given every single Tales game a chance, and Vesperia and Rebirth were the only ones to really capture me. As an ex-Tales hater, I would like to express my love for Vesperia. Everything about it clicked for me, especially fatal strikes and the FF9 skill system. Getting Troy Baker for Yuri didn't hurt, either.

If you ever happen to look at a guide for this, you may notice that you've missed a lot of stuff.

This usually isn't the case for many RPGs, but in this case the experience you have with a "main run" and a "complete run" can really be quite different. You learn a lot of side details about the world/characters/story, find a few special items, skills, and pieces of equipment, fight people that you don't fight in the main story, get stuff like costumes, etc.

Though I wouldn't recommend doing any of it on a first playthrough. I always felt that they never intended for people to do this kind of stuff on their first playthrough because of the sheer volume of stuff to do, and how it elaborates on a couple things to give you a slightly different perspective in comparison to the first time.

On that note, what the hell were they thinking when they designed
Cumore
.

He stuck out like a sore thumb.

Yup.

Or in the beginning when Yuri tells Estelle to change into something less conspicuous, and she comes out in this weird white dress-pantaloon thing.

There's your reason.

Namco :lol

I feel your pain. :(

Seriously. I have it on the 360, but I'd do a 'complete' run through on the PS3, especially for the added content. They're denying Americans our chance to play with a pirate loli.

...I think I'm giving out too much information here.

I thought the voice acting was, for the most part, great. Probably the best VA in any JRPG I've played.

And, IMO, the story doesn't get too cliche and meandering until the last third, where it fully descends into total stock plot syndrome.
Although I did call who the final boss would be the first time I saw him. Just his appearance gave it away. I mean, really...could that be any more cliche at this point? Sephiroth has a lot to answer for.

My one piece of advice: If you want to get all the best weapons/outfits/titles/etc. make sure that you revisit all the towns possible and sleep in the inn a few times each every time you move the plot forward.

Vesperia has quite a few side quests, but it loves to have them take place two towns back on the off chance you might be visiting, and then lock them off if you progress the story at all. Also, it loves to make chains of quests, so if you happen to miss one link, you lose out on several other quests.

I'll just say that by the time you get flying transport, you've either completed a good chunk of the side quests or you've already lost the ability to do many of them.

While I certainly wouldn't say it is MOSTLY good, I did forget to mention that Yuri's VA is actually pretty good.

At least in terms of this generation it's true, and I'd say the same with ToS as well. ToA would have fallen into this category, but it had issues on the PS2.

Definitely my favorite JRPG this gen cause will it might not have excelled in any one area there were no pitfalls to be had. The game was a good length for JRPG fans, voice acting was descent, the story while it had some cliched moments was pretty solid throughout most of time played, graphics were drawn great for the franchise in HD, everything ran like 10 times smoother than all the other JRPGs out there, load times were virtually non existent, and the battle system got tweaked and upgraded another time.

Granted nothing really excelled for me though the graphics came close in how smooth the game was with the load times being hella short, but everything was just pretty solid through out. Other JRPGs like Eternal Sonata, Lost Odyssey, and Blue Dragon just all had stumbles here and there.

Best JRPG so far this generation.

And I love the post-combat dialogue. Estelle's are almost always genuinely hilarious IMO.

The fact that the characters seem so cliche just makes it all the better when
Yuri ends up murdering that corrupt dude.
I really didn't see it coming.
