No, the girl with her hands on her hips in the op's pic.
Great pick, ryoko is my favourite too. She was supposed to be the love interest before the creators turned it into a harem series, which is why she probably has the best chemistry with tenchi.

Outside of tenchi in tokyo, tenchi universe/tv is the worst and I'm surprised to see it get such praise on gaf.

Tenchi Universe was the most solid overall. Nothing is worse than GXP, which was so godawful that it was quickly pushed to a graveyard slot to avoid dragging the other Toonami shows down with it (easily the worst thing that they've licensed post-revival, and I'm including SAO when I say that). Easily one of the worst anime I've ever seen, and ultimately wasn't even about Tenchi beyond a cameo episode, but that still managed to be the least of its problems.

I once considered Tenchi in Tokyo the worst, but GXP makes that look like the masterful work of a brilliant auteur by comparison.

I remember this airing on Toonami or CN back in 98 or 99 I think(?) when I was 9ish and being completely captivated by the show. I didn't really know what anime was let alone 'harem', but the show was like nothing I had ever seen before. Even as a 9-year-old I remember the music being pretty slick too. That being said, I haven't actually seen the show since. And although I haven't watched anime for like 5-6 years, nostalgia is a thing and I should really check it out now that I can probably better understand it.

I liked the first several episodes of GXP but the quality quickly spiraled down and the ending made me geniunely angry, which rarely happens to me. It was also one of the last anime series I watched before deciding that I wasn't really into anime much anymore, back in 2005.

What was cut from the Toonami versions?
Among the main things that stood out were the addition of digitized swimsuits for bathing scenes, as well as having any instances of sake referred to as tea instead (even when it was still clear that characters were drunk off their asses).

Pretty sure I saw Daughter of Darkness first, though it may have been In Love since I can't find any evidence of DoD being on TV. I must have been, 14, 15? Really hooked me. I spent a small fortune buying a few OVA VHS at Suncoast, then my family bought a computer with a DVD player. For the price of three of those tapes, the complete OVA series was the first DVD I ever bought. Sadly it did not come with the cool trading cards like the VHS did.

I've only seen an episode and a half of the third OVA. Mostly because the new voice for Ryoko is heartbreakingly awful. I hear it's pretty terrible in general though. Tenchi Universe is solid, and both of its movies are great. Daughter of Darkness is probably my favorite, though I suspect few would share that sentiment. I've never watched (that I can recall, at least) in Tokyo, GXP, or any of that Magical Sammy stuff to comment on it.

Also have really fond memories of downloading Tenchi mp3s off of Napster and listening to them nonstop. Good times.

Tenchi Muuo together with Saikor Moon was my first Anime I watched back in the day. Then Tenchi Universe came out and I fell in love with it.

Kiyone Makibi is the best out of the bunch and has a really sexy voice (especially when she gets angry at Mihoshi) and was hoping she would end up being Tenchis wife :(

I do hope that they add her in Ova 4 but that is too much to hope for.

So... Universe > Ova 1/2 > Tenchi Muyo Movies > Ova 3 > GPX > Tokyo

I haven't seen the other spin offs sadly

Magical Project S is a fun tongue-in-cheek take on the whole magical girl genre. Tropes galore.

My parents rented me the Tenchi Muyo Universe tapes when I was 6-ish (didn't have cable and wasn't a guarantee it'd be on Toonami when I was at a friend's place) so I was probably way too young to be watching it (my parents assumed since it was a cartoon it'd more or less be around about the same level of maturity as Pokemon) but regardless I wound up loving it. Saw the original OVA stuff years later (thinking I'd bought Universe, annoyingly enough) and while I didn't hate it, I couldn't' really get into it either because so much of it was different, even if it's technically the 'real' one.

Movies are pretty good, though seem to get progressively worse with each one. Tokyo was god awful. Haven't seen the other spin-offs and alternate takes.

I haven't watched a lot of anime (like maybe 20 episodes total across all shows) but I did watch a good chunk of Tenchi Universe when it was on Adult Swim several years back. Its silly but it definitely made me laugh a few times.

Tenchi Universe and Tenchi Muyo OVA were my best friend and I's total obsession for a while back in high school. It was the first anime series I ever owned, and it still holds a lot of nostalgic value for me...but I can't really watch it, or anime like it, at all anymore.

The first movie still holds up pretty well though.

Blast from the past. Loved this show when I first saw it on cartoon network, but hated how they ended without resolution. I never went back and honestly forgot about them over the years, but now I want to watch them again. Thanks for this thread and I know what I plan on watching this weekend.

Love Tenchi Muyo, enjoyed GXP and War on Geminar is great

Ryoko is the best

One of the first anime I ever remember watching. Had all of those Pioneer releases on VHS. I remember spending my birthday money on that first Pioneer OVA DVD box set.

While the OVAs are still pretty fun, I'd say that Tenchi Muyo in Love 2 (Forever) is easily the highest point of the series. Transcends the original series by a hefty margin.

Just finished OVA 2 last night. It was a lot of fun! It wasn't as good as OVA 1 overall but still a very fun series. More slice of life, but still great regardless. The opening episode was FANTASTIC as well!

Watched half of OVA 3...eurgh, this one is a doozy. More boring than anything.

Ooh god just finished watching OVA3. What a clusterfuck.

Episode 1-5 was boring as hell. Noike is awful as expected, just Mary Sue. Not even the gags were enjoyable.

Episode 6 was the BIGGEST clusterfuck I've ever seen in any anime/manga series. Holy shit. So many unanswered questions. What's with Sasami's mom? Kagato?!

So basically the series boils down to Tenchi being the center of the universe or something.

Bleh.

Ahhhh, childhood nostalgia. Toonami. Them were the days.

I remember Muyo was my favorite even though Universe had the most fun, overall. Hated Tenchi in Tokyo.

I'd rather keep it a memory though. I doubt I'd like it as much nowadays.
