LTTP: The Hateful 8 or Sam Jackson's Black Dingus

A couple days ago I got the chance to finally sit down and watch Tarantino's The Hateful 8. I have to say I loved every second of this movie. However, the part that stood out the most to me was Samuel L. Jackson's Dingus monologue. Good lord how did he not win an academy award for that? The pitches his voice hits when he's telling the story. The baiting the joy the anger. It might have been Sam Jackson at his best.

Overall I give the movie a strong 9/10 and consider kt Tarantino's 4th best film.

I agree, thought it was a top 5 Samuel Jackson performance at least and should have resulted in a nomination. That was one of the awards where I thought "man, maybe #Oscarssowhite" is on to something. But I think the academy was kind of against that movie in general.

I also rank it fourth coincidentally.

Rented it and sadly didn't get the chance to watch it, having not realized that it's three freakin' hours.

Some day soon, hopefully.

I've heard mixed things.

Absolutely hated this movie. I'm not from the south, but it felt like another excuse for Tarantino to open up old wounds so he could hate on southeners. The dialogue felt masturbatory, and there was a ton of build up for what ended up being an extremely lack luster ending. I like tarantino movies, but for some reason this one was rife with everything I didn't know I hated about them. What were supposed to be cathartic scenes with a release of tension just fell flat for me.

Honestly the first hour and a half is dedicated to a lot lf set up. It's actually a pretty slow film with massive payoffs and a mad dash to the finish line.

I think it might his best directed film, but I am not sure its my favorite Tarantino film. I need to watch it a few more times.

I agree that Jackson is amazing tho.

Samuel L. Jackson is a highly underrated actor that doesn't get his dues but it was definitely Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy Domergue who stole the show.

Anyway, personally I Ioved lots of things about the movie but it all sort of fell apart in the third act. Enjoyable but lower tier Tarentino.

It was great and had me captivated

"Old" wounds?

okay not old.. but it seems like he just grabbed his footnotes of things that he didn't get to do in django and made it into a movie. i loved django, but its definitely a "fuck the south" movie, just like this one is.

Lived in the South my whole life. Born in Mississippi and raised in Tennessee.

Fuck the south.

Can't it just be a "fuck the south as it was back then and fuck the people who want it back that way" movie?

Great film. Think I might favour it over Django due to it running nicely parallel with resvoire dogs.

Amazing movie. One of those films that clicked with me in every way possible and loved every second of it. So tense, so funny, so well acted, everyone was firing on all cylinders here. One of Tarantino's best for sure.

Definitely on the lesser end of the spectrum of his movies, but I still enjoyed it. He desperately needs a new editor though and his self indulgent schtick is becoming self parodic at this point. The second half goes wildly off the rails with irritating flourishes like his narration, and the mostly pointless flashback sequence. Movie did not need to be 3 hours long, and it was a waste of 70mm film considering 95% of the movie is set in claustrophobic interiors.

Still, the cabin develops a nice sense of place and serves as a dynamic setting for the shifting character relationships, and I felt the movie had a bit more of a nuanced take on the same themes that Django had.

I love Tarantino and I loved the film but I remember saying to my brother that if Tim Roth's character
turned out to be the bad guy he'd go full cockney. Lo and behold...

I don't know if this is the Best Tarantino movie but it's certainly the Most Tarantino movie. It's definitely worth seeing.

I liked the movie but why did he refer to it as a "dingus"? Was that term used back then? I know Tarantino isn't all about historical accuracy but it just sounded goofy.

I walked out of the cinema during the interlude after the rape story cus everyone seemed to find it hilarious or something and I was just like umm... no.

Look at the title. Consider the ending.

Repeat until the lightbulb clicks on.

It was very good but not his best for me. Too long and meandering for no actual reason than he wanted it to be, too little differentiation between the dialogue (always an issue with QT films) but despite a fine cast I felt this time too often it felt like everyone had the same "voice". Speaking of which Qt narrating parts didn't help in that regard.

Magnificent in parts, in clear danger of losing its way in others, but yes still overall very good.

It's very good, but I do hope he switches things up a bit for his next film, bringing things back into more modern times, and lays off the n-word for just a bit. Yeah, yeah, period specifics and all that but damn, let's take a break shall we?

Oh poor racist southerners. Won't anyone think of the white man?

"Hating on Southerners"

Kinda funny considering the ending.

Really liked the movie. Great performances all around despite some of the archetypes being a bit too Tarantino, almost perfect direction in general and, in my eyes, well-written and well-paced. The worst thing that stood out was Tarantino's own narration that came out of nowhere and which ruined the mood a bit.

I had gotten tired of Tarantino and I've liked some of but haven't really loved any of his movies since Kill Bill vol 1, so I was really surprised when I loved the hell out of this movie. Samuel L Jackson's character and Walton Goggins's character need a buddy cop movie together.

The only bits I didn't care much for was Tarantino's narration.

Terrible movie. Almost no tension, boring setting, predictable plot, and stuffed with Tarantino's favorite types of characters: archetypes playing up their single notes to the extreme.

He's done better and hopefully does better again in the future.

Well he is sort of a Southerner. He was born in Tennessee and has a Tennessee reference in almost all his movies.

It is a damn slow burn, but man if the payoff isn't worth it. Loved it.

Wait you think Warren was telling the truth? He told as over the top story as he possibly could to make the general attempt to kill him.
