LTTP: The WWF's "Attitude Era"

Well I'm now at the point where Raw has been rebranded to Raw is War and has gotten a big production value boost, coming up on Wrestlemania 13.

I think 2000 was the best year of the Attitude Era.

The storylines weren't as hokey, you had a large influx of talent other Feds (Benoit, Guerrero, Jericho.. etc)

Triple H and the Rock having hectic matches at the beginning of the year.

The Dudleys, Hardyz, Edge &Christian carrying the tag team division.

Kurt.

Angle.

Bitches wanna fuck me call me Kurt Angle

To be real though, I started watching Smackdown in 03 because it's what I could watch. Kurt Angle was my boy.

When you where younger who was that random mid carder you rooted for?

Mine was Crash Holly (RIP)

Didnt learn about his death until years after the fact as well but I didnt do the internet back then and WWF brushed that one kinda under the rug as far as ex wrestler deaths go for whatever reason.

I was such a mark for Steve Blackman.

Oh wow, I completely forgot that Ken Shamrock transitioned to wrestling after his early UFC days. As a lifelong MMA fan it's weird as hell seeing him here.

FYI, Shamrock actually started out as a pro wrestler. He then transitioned over to MMA, then back to pro wrestling.

When I was younger...

Bret Hart (post Hart Foundation singles push)
Tatanka (for his entire undefeated run, I was crushed by Ludvig Borga and Tatanka's heel turn)
1-2-3 Kid (Love early Kid stuff... I was seriously elated after that Razor victory and marked so hard for that storyline)

I basically loved any baby face. Loved Crush when he feuded with Doink at WM9, despite that shit show of a PPV. And was a huge fan of the Steiner Bros and Smoking Guns around 1992/1993.

As I got older, my random mid-card favorite was Matt Hardy single's push when he did the V1 thing, thought that was so cool though wasn't really into wrestling as much.

Favorite mid-carders.. Shamrock, Ahmed, "just2cool" tag team, The Godfather. Wcw it was definitely Raven.

'95 ish WWF actually had better mid carders for me. Bam bam, Tatanka, Goldust (kinda falls apart in attitude era), Razor (bite tongue calling him mid-card).

No words on Bret's screaming cursing tirade on Raw? Which was what forced them to have a TV tape delay.

Brett's whole heel turn post mania has been great. HBK also did an absolutely brutal 10+ minute promo on him that sounded an awful lot like it was 80% authentic.

To go home show for Mania 13 is better than the actual event. Especially that final segment. Every time I watch it I want to order WM 13 even though I already know it's a bunch of mediocre matches and one great match.

Wasn't that also the first show with the new Raw ramp and production?

Watching Summerslam '97 right now, damn Owen really botched that piledriver and fucked Stone Cold up. That was brutal.

Yea this is a great match, having Shawn Michaels in there as ref was a great idea.

The next night on Raw is where I tell people to start to see the Attitude Era. This is about where it fully begins. Enjoy this. This is where the building blocks to DX and Austin/McMahon get laid down.

I was into the WWF until there was a RAW night where the Undertaker was brought back from the dead by Paul Bearer. It sucked so much that I've never watched it again.

1997 in the bag, onwards to 98.

It was interesting to watch the screwjob, as a Canadian I heard all about it back when it happened, too bad the broadcast cut out all the juicy bits.

It's kind of downhill from here. You'll get maybe maybe 3-4 PPV before it begins that downward trend. Have fun with Over the Edge 98 and that super awesome Sable vs Mero match.

Just watched the 2002 Thanksgiving episode of Smackdown, and, well,

At this point WWF still had not beaten WCW once in the ratings war. Nitro is on a 80 week winning streak. You'll know the Raw that finally beats them for the first time when you see it. It's a big one.

Do Dgen X ever change their walkout? The rapid cuts between the walkout and the video clips is headache inducing.

So King of the Ring '98. Mick Foley is fucking crazy. What. The. Fuck?

The only part of that whole thing that legitimately disgusts me is that Foley comes back out to interfere in the main event, which means McMahon and company cleared him to go out and do that.

I was stoked for Austin/Kane first blood. I delayed my family leaving on a vacation trip by a day, just to watch the PPV..

When this match came on, my Dad eventually got pulled in watching it. Then yelled to my brother, who started watching it. Everyone watching the replays mouths agape. Foley stole the show with his Evel Knievel act. Although I don't really know that it makes great wrestling. Prefer the HBK/Taker Hell in a Cell match.

Also, you may run into the Owen Hart ppv. Never really wanted to see that one again. It would be strange if the WWE network has it.

It does have that PPV, though an edited version of it without Owen's segment and a "in memory" Owen graphic at the beginning of the ppv..

HBK/Taker remains the best HIAC match ever, and possibly the greatest wwf match of all time. Storytelling leading up to it was perfect, storytelling in the match was perfect, the action itself was great, the run in at the end was incredible, the commentary was superb..just a match where everything went right both leading up and during the match.

Definitely one of the best. That and Hart/Austin Wm13 are in a serious battle for match of the year, and probably the best two matches of their surrounding years. I'm a fan of the attitude era to come as well, but always felt wrong that 97's best two performers weren't a part of the WWE anymore after WM14. The era could have been that much stronger.

"Are you kidding me?! He wants to go back up! Mankind is going back up!"

[huge pop]

That match is crazy, a mess and obviously not great wrestling but it is special.

Earlier in the thread I said that the Mandible Claw is the dumbest finisher I've ever seen. I think I may now have to replace that with the Peoples Elbow.

I'm gonna run full speed off both ropes and then completely stop removing all momentum and slowly drop my elbow on them.

Ok Rock. Ok.

Honestly any off the top rope move that takes 30+ seconds to set up and deliver is worse. If you have two minutes to drag a guy into position, climb the ropes, ready yourself and pose before leaping through the air, wouldnt you just pin the guy and win the match instead?

He's saving all the built up running momentum by stopping and pushing it to the elbow focal point. Physics.

Mandible Claw isn't as bad as the original:

The People's Elbow became stupid once it actually started being used as a finisher. I preferred it when it was just a gag move Rock did to get heat.
