LTTP: World of Goo

I think I've owned World of Goo since it had that pay what you want sale a couple of years back and have since bought it again roughly 5 times (it's always turning up in bundles). Despite this, I never really played the game. I usually get to somewhere in chapter two and then just give up for no real reason other than I've probably completed chapters 1 and 2 about 10 times and get bored of the game.

Anyway, after getting the game for my touchpad in the humble android bundle, I deciced to play it again this time push through to the end while commuting on the bus. Thank god I did.

Now having finished it, I have to say that World of Goo is probably in my top five list of indie games this generation. Everything about it feels designed to perfection. The game never stops throwing new goo balls at you and forces you to use them in crazy ways that you wouldn't expect at the start of the game. Every puzzle feels unique and challenging without being overly difficult. I could always solve a puzzle after playing around with the goo balls and the levels attributes in a couple of minutes so it sort of felt like portal in that respect.

So yeah, I could fawn over this game for hours upon hours but I just want to say:

If you own World of Goo (and you probably do), GO PLAY IT THROUGH. It remains to be one of the most enjoyable puzzle experineces of the past few years. Seriously, play it!

Also, the epilogue of the game is amazing. Some of the best puzzles in the game are there. You can tell the designers thought "hey, you haven't used these early mechanics in a while so lets bring them back and make them way more hardcore". So much fun.

I have finished it twice, great game with lots of charisma.

There isn't any user created levels right? Because that is what it really needs.

I played if for ~45 minutes or so and it just didn't hook me. I don't see the appeal. I told myself I should come back to it some day, but I really don't have the motivation. Game looks nice at least.

It's probably one of my top ten games I have ever played. It's the only soundtrack I have on my mobile and I use part of it when I get a text message. I love it.

Game's great. Probably my favourite indie game of all time. I love how it never really lets you learn anything. There's always some new mechanic or trick to learn in every stage.
I also prefer my games with low resolution and sub par controls.

What's this "sub par" nonsense? It has a pointer. It's like a mouse but more accurate.

Got it from the first (or second?) Humble Indie Bundle. I remember getting stuck on some cyberpunkish level, with big computer monitor or something similar... But up to that point, it was awesome, I agree.

GOTY 2008.

My favorite game of 2008, played it countless of times, it's just so great and endearing!

This was my GOTY 2008 as well. The soundtrack, the light story, and the level design were all incredible.

Everyone said what I had to say already so only thing else I can add is my favorite song off the soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shN6FbzVquw

Naw dude

My favorite game of 2008 as well.

Incredible soundtrack as well. One of my favorite tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEwf60vArfM.

Wiimote pointer is a lot faster and more accurate than a mouse when it comes to directly controlling a cursor on the screen. The mouse's main advantage is that it's easier to use for indirect control, i.e. dragging a scroll bar or moving a cursor by moving the entire screen (like how you aim in first person shooters).

Yeah, World of Goo, especially when it was released, was one of those indie games that I think really blew a lot of people away (myself included). Its just not the kind of package you expect from two people.

I love World of Goo! Really impressive game for a 2 man team.

Never beat it though, it's still installed so I'll have to finish it eventually.

That makes no sense whatsoever.

Tell me why directly controlling the location of your cursor is less accurate than controlling the speed and direction in which your cursor moves.

Go on, tell me.

The mouse is directly controlling the location of your cursor. What are you trying to say. Only if you have mouse acceleration on does it control only speed and direction.

Why do you think Starcraft 2 players play with a mouse and not a Wii remote?

That makes no sense whatsoever.
You don't understand the difference between direct and indirect control? Or you don't understand why the Wiimote is faster than a mouse at controlling a cursor? Moving a cursor with a mouse requires you to physically move something with your hand, whereas using a Wiimote only requires you to slightly tilt your wrist. You have a lot more accurate control over your wrists than you do your hand.

Why do you think Starcraft 2 players play with a mouse and not a Wii remote?

Apart from the obvious fact that it doesn't natively support Wii remotes, the game requires a lot of indirect camera movement, which is better suited for a mouse. Though it would be easier to select troops, buildings etc. if you played it with a Wii remote.

Starcraft 2 pros almost never camera scroll.

Also, just try to ignore the fact that the Wii remote has a ton of input lag compared to a mouse.

I have exciting news for you! You can actually move your mouse with just your wrist as well!

No it doesn't. Are you confusing it with input lag from your HDTV?

You still need to use your hand in conjunction with your wrist, which decreases its accuracy. Unless you're using a gyroscopic mouse or something.

I've played Cubello on Dolphin, using both a mouse and a real Wiimote to control the cursor but otherwise using the exact same setup, and the difference was night and day.

2D Boy, if you made something this wonderful in 2008, then why is it now 2012 and we've yet to see something new? Pleeeeeeeease, WoG is such an incredible experience; gorgeous visuals and haunting, yet beautiful music with challenging gameplay that remains accessible makes the fact that all we've got out of you in the in the past 4 years is a handful of ports physically hurts me.

This and Lostwinds 1+2 makes the Wii Shop worthwhile for me.
Oh and SBCGFAP 1-5 as well!

Beat this on Wii 3 years ago or so and just the other week I couldn't pass it up for 25 cents (or was it 50?) On my phone.

Fantastic game! Though the collision detection seems a bit weaker on android

The mouse is directly controlling the location of your cursor.

No it's not. If it was, you wouldn't be able to increase or decrease mouse speed.

And there's no input lag for the pointer on a wii remote. Some games have a bit of lag because that's just the way those specific games are programmed for whatever reason. It's not inherent to the Wii.

Fantastic game. The Wii controls work wonderfully, despite what some in here seem to think.

Great art style and one of my favorite soundtracks ever. I would very much like another game from 2D Boy.

Man, I wonder what 2D Boy has been up to the last few years? They did the iPad/iPhone version after the PC/Wii versions, but beyond that, nothing!

Hopefully it'll kick ass, whatever it is :-D
