What about taxes on winning a prize? - That depends on where you live. In the U.S., there are typically taxes to be paid by the winner on the value of the prize. In Canada, if the contest or sweepstakes has a skill-testing question, it is usually deemed to be a game of skill and not a game of chance, so there typically are no taxes to be paid. (The Province of Quebec generally has it's own regulations regarding contests and sweepstakes). No matter where you live, it is always best to check with your local tax office regarding potential taxes on winnings from a contest or sweepstakes.

I was just reading about Michael Larson like two days ago, and watched his episode of PYL. Awesome stuff.DrForester said:This is the greatest man to ever play a game show.

In 1984 this man was able to watch, and memorize the light pattern of the board in the show "Press Your Luck" He managed to get on the show, and managed to amass over $110,000, making 47 spins, only hitting a whammy in his first spin. CBS's winning cap at the time was only $25,000 (keep in mind, it's 1984), so he would not be invited back the next program, but was entitled to his winnings. CBS tried to accuse him of cheating, but Larson was able to argue that what he did was no different than cracking the books for Jeopardy, so they ahd to pay him in the end.
The mans story ends sadly though as a gambling addiction and a few real estate scams cost him his money and he eventually died of cancer. Still, his appearance was quite epic.

hahah I watched this a few years ago... it's epic, and very shortly in you can tell he's totally abusing the system since he stops it on the same square almost every time.DrForester said:This is the greatest man to ever play a game show.

The Wiki said that a large chunk of money was lost when someone stole it while him and his wife were at a Christmas party. It didn't go into any detail though. Have you heard more about what happened?DrForester said:This is the greatest man to ever play a game show.

Huh? I was honestly saying good job. The cash winnings will off-set the cost of the cars and other prizes so he gets to enjoy them without paying the big taxes. Some people are forced to give up the prizes because they can't afford the taxes (like the Oprah incident!). Luckily, though, this is in CA where you have to offer a cash alternate prize, anyway.kpop100 said:Interesting how easy it is to spot the jealous/bitter people in life.
