Luther Series 4 starring Idris Elba |OT| Wotcha, John

Issues with the episode were quite obvious. They were trying to do to much and once and it felt like they just quickly and quietly wrapped up everything in the last 15 minutes.

Some nonsense storyline from the past; the Alice thing that didn't get resolved, the killer stopped etc. I enjoyed George's banter with Luther but didn't like how he capitulated to him.

This whole thing needed at least two more episodes. Since the series keeps getting shorter, I expect the next series to be one episode and then the final series to be a web blog.

Bit of a let down compared to episode 1. Sure the cannibal stuff ended well but the Alice stuff was handled pretty badly. I just wish maybe we were getting one more episode to maybe close that arc up?

It seemed from the end of the episode that they were getting it up for another storyline later down the road, maybe for the movie (although I heard if they were going to do a movie it would be a prequel, who knows now really).

Still real good television though.

I'm thinking that, if Ruth Wilson returns, they'll spin it as if she needed time for something, maybe a loose end that need to be tied up. So she got Megan to pull this whole routine, the latter's final sentences to Luther sounded like something Alice would've had her say.

And if not, they have an out. For me, this is the Luther/Morgan show, but I can understand them not wanting to be tethered to that until the last breath. Still, I'd rather no more seasons if they had just finished the show with Season 3. Related, when the flashback happened in the first episode of this season, I was hoping that the entire case would've been part of it. That way they don't trivialize the S3 conclusion.

Just watched both episodes back to back and as a Londoner I thought it was ridiculously unbelievable.

Se7en style computer nerd serial killer goes around London brutally murdering people? C'mon now, that kind of shit just wouldn't happen in London. Everything felt like a bunch of early 2000s horror film cliches - blood splattered walls, blood trails on the floor, obvious clues, the tech nerd killer's geek cave with 10 monitors complete with"self destruct" mode and pictures of all his victims neatly plastered on the wall.
The killer also happens to conveniently own a maze-like, abandoned warehouse for butchering people.

And then there's the way he got the spyware onto the computers of his victims - how many white middle-class Londoners contact a service called "Geek Squad" to sort out their wifi in 2015?
Modern technology more often than not works straight out the box these days.

The second episode lost me. A mysterious psychic replaces Alice and just happens to be an attractive woman who wants to play mind games with Luther?

The cinematography in both episodes was impressive and Luther is a good character, but everything else was ridiculous.

You seem a bit confused.
The killer had made a bunch of abandoned buildings into what were essentially safe houses. It wasn't a maze-like warehouse, it was a dilapidated hospital IIRC

Uhh, Geek Squad is an actual thing, unless you guys don't have Best Buys. You can literally go to geeksquad.com

She wasn't actually a psychic. She was just a girl who stalked Luther and Alice since he was an investigator in a case involving one of her classmates years ago

What are you talking about. Geek Squad is an actual thing

Just found out about this. Surprised it's a real thing tbh.

The reason I find it unusual is in my experience middle-class families / couples living in London normally know a family member or friend with tech skills.
They wouldn't use a service like this imo.

Such a shame they couldn't get at least 4 episodes, there was too much there for 2 episodes. Even 2 hour long eps would have been better.

Enjoyed what little we got, hopefully we get 4-6 episodes for season 5

So no one else was bothered that when the killer escaped his flat it was impossible for him to replace the air vent grating as well as the fridge before escaping? I'm sure theres no way he could have done that from inside the vent or am I missing something?

Why not? Fridges aren't smooth on the back. You can still fit your fingers between ventilation ridges from the other side as well

How could they have fucked that up? lmao

It was an open contract for anyone who wanted in, so the guys Luther took out probably weren't pros.

Related, but I wasn't happy that Luther gave all the diamonds away. He probably could've kept some, although I understand why he did it. They no longer had value because Alice was gone and his happiness is dead.

So disappointed with that wrap-up. Talk about your it'sfuckingnothing.gif endings. What were the burner phones doing in the safety deposit box if not setting up a scene where Luther calls Alice? Do they honestly expect me to believe this new chick got the better of her? Come on, mate.

Still love this show for the brilliant isolated scenes it manages to pull off, but the overall quality has just been so hit and miss since series 1. Like, everything with the Guy Richie criminal guy was fantastic, the "'avin' a laugh?" scene was amazing, and I could watch Luther taking out incompetent hitmen all day, but then it comes to the big dramatic moments and I'm alternately rolling my eyes and just being dumbfounded at what they expect me to buy. How do you end a season on a scene where a man says "I'm coming for you" to the woman he's sitting right next to, and then just walks off? Might as well have told her he'd "get her next time, Gadget", then looked straight down the barrel of the camera and said "Stay chooned for Loofah series 5, guv!"

There is still 1 more episode...

That whole Alice subplot was shit, didn't enjoy any of it

The main case though was great, but it felt so unfocused becsase of the Alice thing, sadly a meh ass comeback. Hopefully we get more Luther

enjoyable, but felt way too rushed together at the end and ultimately inconsequential to luther as a character. like going back to square one in a lot of ways.

at this rate they either need to get idris elba for a full series, or just cap the whole thing off with a big finale. it just doesn't have the punch the amazing first series had, and i think that is in part to do with the shrinking availability of their lead actor.

edit: y'know what? just do the film actually.

I could watch Idris as Luther read the phone book so I'm just happy to have gotten more, but yeah it felt super rushed and all over the place. They needed at least 2 more episodes to make these storylines work and give everything space to breathe.

Hope we get a more substantial set of episodes eventually, or that movie.

Luther in a nutshell.

S1 - Oh shit, that was awesome
S2 - Wait, why?
S3 - Um, no one asked for this.
S4 - Only two episodes? What is this?

But . . . that song at the bank though.

Like people are saying isolated scenes were fantastic but I can't say I was a massive fan of S3's ending anyway so to have 2 hours dedicated to the "Where's Alice?" subplot was a big shame.

It was a joy to see Luther again. I liked his struggle against John (and the Jobbers that keep interrupting his investigations). The cannibal storyline was nice at the beginning but it was lame when we learn he is just another nerd no life psycho. It felt it was a pretext to get John back in the game and prepare him to get in the greater storyline that is Alice's disparition except they didn't deliver on it, we still know nothing more.
While I'm happy to see they are still making the show, they clearly did not make enough of it.
