M. Night Shyamalan. What Happened?

Well?

He put some really good movies but after Signs he seemed to fall into a rut which only got worse with every release

I know some people rate The Village as one of the better movies, but it was terrible in comparison to Signs and the less said about Lady of the Water, the better.

And while we all got a few laughs from The Happening, it really only served to show just how far he'd fallen. I've yet to see The Last Airbender, but based on reviews/feedback, it's probably his most terrible movie to date.

So what happened? Was he just a flash in the pan director/writer? Did he use the twist™ too many times?

His greatest work is yet to come.

My GF for some reason thinks The Village was a really good movie. Bitches be crazy.

Personally I never cared for him. I thought Signs sucked and 6th Sense overrated but good.

He's one note, and the note turned sour after too many uses. So instead of finding a new note, he decided to just play it crazier.

Could just simply be that some people just have a couple good ideas in them. Which, credit to him, is more than most have.

He got too much praise and thinks too highly of himself. This causes him to put out bad movies cause he assumes everything he touches turns to gold.

Witta is gonna make the first movie with negative score!

He was always terrible. (edit: lol beaten)

His only good movie was unbreakable, and one great movie doesnt make a great director.

He also has a huge ego up his ass, appearing in each of his movies like he was the new Hitchcock or something.

Where is everyone getting "he got too full of himself" from? I've never heard anything like that, unless I missed something. Just seems to me like the quality of his creative works has declined since his first one, this isn't unheard of.

I'm still amazed that people thing The Sixth Sense is good movie.
I mean this movie doesn't have twist it has plot hole through whole movie that director is masking with lie.

Oh i know, but that's just a not-too-subtle tribute film in spirit, and i actually think the trailer is done that way on purpose, i expect some twisted unexpected.. twist in the actual film.

Going by works they already did, i really dont see it. Waiting for JJ's Schindler's List.

Tell me about it. It's terrible and filled with cheap scares.

Don't most people like the smell of their own farts?
Only the ones worthy of praise, you can't like all of them. That's how you turn into a douche. He started liking the smell of all of them, a costly mistake.

TLA :(

He didn't even come up with the "twist" in Sixth Sense until his third or fourth draft of the screenplay. His entire career is one happy accident.

I think this happened after a reporter called him out on The Last Airbender sucking, and M. Night was delusional when he replied.

He was always a hack. The Sixth Sense sucked other than the twist. Watch it again if you don't believe me. I'm amazed that this cheap trick fooled people into believing he was an amazing director. The Book of Eli (which I enjoyed) used the exact same trick but nobody praises whoever the hell directed that.

I did like Unbreakable.

I still need to see unbreakable. I loved Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson's chemistry in Die Hard 3.

Yeah, you really do.

EDIT: Didn't know that the Sixth Sense twist was an accident, I was going to say that was a really good one.

How was Devil? Premise looked cool but then I figured it would be shit

Pretty good actually, probably because it's not his movie.

I liked the village, i dunno - Airbender was shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit though, thankfully I didn't pay to see that.

When I saw him at NYCC this year, he was everything but full of himself and delusional. He was actually pretty honest about his career and Unbreakable. Unbreakable wasn't even a popular movie at the box office, anyway.

He also said that he makes movies for himself, but that he maybe should do something for the fans (like a sequel to Unbreakable, for example).

It was a very interesting interview. The guy knows how to direct, and I'm still a fan even though I don't like his last three movies. He made such an impression on me with Signs, Sixth Sense and Unbreakable that I still consider him a really, really good director.
