Mac Steam has been released. Steam Play for cross-client ownership. TF2 out on Mac!

If it is Steam that's coming, and not just Mac ports of Source games, I would fully expect my library to work fine (at least the compatible games) on my Mac. As soon as I log into Steam on my Mac, my whole library should be there. What difference does it make of what OS you're on?

I think we're gonna see an announcement of Portal 2 with release the same day on Mac and PC, with Valve announcing they have ported all their own games to Mac, and Steam is releasing that day. Hopefully Valve will encourage publishers to make a port to Mac in the future.

That's what I was thinking. Of course only the Valve Source games would work. I guess they just ported their Engine and putting these games out for OSX should be a trivial thing.

Pleeeeeease let me play the Windows Source games that I already own on the Mac. Blizzard puts both versions on the same disc and that's with the malign influence of Activision behind it, so there's no excuse for Valve not to.

Those teasers are awesome, though.

Blizzard has always but the PC and Mac version of all their games in 1 package. Activision has nothing to do with that.

We've had right mouse button for some time now in Apple mice and on laptops.

Thanks! The only mac I've seen lately it's my brother's macbook pro with a 3rd party minimouse =)

It is a sort of chicken and egg problem the issue of no Mac games. No one makes Mac games because no one buys Mac games because there's no Mac games.

Valve creating a Steam for OS X with their various Source games being ported over would do huge things to encourage development of games for OS X.

Really there should be a lot more. Already many casual games are made for OS X and Blizzard has always supported the platform with day one releases of its games. Id has also always been a supporter. It's Valve which as long been the hold out.

Mac marketshare keeps increasing (basically along laptop lines) and so if game developers continue to ignore this marketshare that's just more and more money left on the table.

Please please let them port CounterStrike and Half Life 1.

EA has also been pretty good with the Mac support lately.

That was likely due to them taking forever to get anything done.

This is fantastic news. As a mac user (switched about 2 years ago), I've been missing Valve's output considerably. I can't wait for Steam to hit.

How playable would it be on a recent Mac Mini with 4Go of Ram and a good processor?

Pretty good, Source games aren't too heavy on the GPU so the 9400m should cope just fine. L4D2 is the only game that might cause issues but lower the settings and you should cope just fine. Anything from the Orange Box will run like butter.

Valve's Source games? They should run perfectly smooth maxed out.
IDK, I installed Crossover a few months back and had huge ass issues trying to get TF2 to run at a decent framerate. Might just be related to the issue that it was running emulated, but the GPU/CPU combo in a Mini isn't that powerful.

He said Mac Mini, not new iMac. Do those even have video cards? Integrated graphics will not run anything 3D maxed out.

Infact, the Intel GMA950 can't even run Counterstrike 1.6 on lowest settings at 30fps.

Now if only the big publishers would stop using Cider and release proper Mac versions. I could not care less about of PC ports of console games for Mac, but i want games like Civ 5 or Anno 1701 to receive proper Mac versions.

yep :lol Here's the link to the MacWorld story

A source at Valve shared the screenshot below with Macworld “in anticipation of an upcoming announcement,” and it couldn’t deliver this news to anxious Mac gamers in any better way. To make sure we’re all on the same page when reading this image: it depicts Alyx Vance, a key character in Half Life 2, reenacting Apple’s famous 1984 commercial by throwing a crowbar (the trademark weapon of Half Life protagonist Gordon Freeman) at series villain Dr. Breen (not to be confused with our own not-at-all-villainous Senior Editor).

The good news is that if Valve's serious about this, any game that is packaged with and runs on Dosbox should run fine on pretty much any platform. I even tried it on the PS3 in linux, everything ran perfectly fine aside from the unusually slow emulation.

Now if only Valve would make an announcement supporting the PS3, everything would be swell.

Well I guess Source has to run with OpenGL on the Mac right? So that's already groundwork for a PS3 port which also uses OpenGL. In theory at least...

Yea, but we all know that this is prob what Valve would use since it works great with hl2 games.

Haha, I misread. As you said it was the iMac in my mind.

Look at the standard mac mouse. Right clicking works 50% of the time
With the magic mouse it works 100% of the time for me. Plus, Macs have USB ports and work with pretty much any mouse out there, just like a PC.

The 9400m found in the Mac Mini is like an order of magnitude faster than a GMA 950. Not all integrated graphics are created equal.

You just right click on it, and it registers it as a right click.

Edit: Nice stealth edit, misunderstood your original post.

that’s pretty awesome. I’d love to play the big Valve games on my Mac instead of on the 360.

I’m also hoping that Steam will be a good home for Indie games that have (or will get) Mac ports.

I love that image of the Mac 128k with the steam logo on it :D

Good to hear. My wife's about to buy herself one.

Current minis have a GeForce 9400M.

BTW do you think everyone uses a mouse from Apple? I've been a Mac user for years now and I prefer using a Logitech mouse. You know the same ones you use on a PC.

Do yourself a favor and get a real mouse. All that gesture crap isn't going to work in game.

And if we can't end the map on L4D because your ass is trying to right-click I won't hesitate to put you down and steal your stuff.

You can't use a Magic Mouse to play games. Stop it you silly people.

I have this nice little MS mouse that I use when I play games on my Mac. Anyone who uses a Mighty or a Magic mouse to play games is doing it very very wrong.

My girlfriend just bought a Magic Mouse this past weekend. I honestly think its my favorite mouse of all time. Being able to swipe around and do iPhone-like gestures on the mouse itself? So awesome.

Steam on Mac should do wonders for the completely untapped world of Mac gaming. Hopefully, the rumors are true and that Valve is developing an in-house port of the Orange Box. I'd love to see them lead the charge. Otherwise, just having a trusted and reliable place to buy Mac games should blow the market wide open.

Haha, ok, good. Im not the only person who keeps a Microsoft mouse around for when the mousing needs to get SERIOUS.

This is cool.

But honestly all new macs come with Intel processors and most come with Bootcamp from what I gather so why not just install windows and not worry about it?
