• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Mac Steam has been released. Steam Play for cross-client ownership. TF2 out on Mac!

I am guilty of this myself, but every time this thread gets bumped my heart skips a beat.

An early release? A delayed release? What could it be? :lol

Three days!

So did this come out in April? I haven't seen any new people post in the L4D threads about having the game for Mac and wanting to play.

:(

May 12th is when they said it would come out. don't know what valve time means though

So officially announced for April if you go by the old Russian calendar? Oh Valve time, breaking in the Mac people right from the get-go.

Well at least the beta was released in April. Half credit?

I'm not in the beta, but I've heard that performance is good, but it lags a bit behind what it would be if you were playing on windows through bootcamp.

Is there any list of non-Valve publishers that will have games on Mac Steam day one?

At the moment, I'm really hoping for the Telltale games to make their way to the service.

This post here on the Telltale forums is a good sign:

Regarding Games

Steam coming to Mac OS X does not magically make your games run on Mac OS X.
The availability of non-Valve games is up to the developer and publisher.

The following games have been confirmed for Mac OS X:
Counter-Strike (presumably Source)
"The Half-Life Series"
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
Portal
Portal 2 (upcoming)
Team Fortress 2
Madballs in...Babo:Invasion [10]
Killing Floor [15]
Red Orchestra [15]
Torchlight [12][15]

The following games have metadata indicating a Mac OS X version [13] [14]:
Bejeweled 2 Deluxe
Chuzzle Deluxe
BookWorm Deluxe
Peggle Nights
Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 1 - Launch of the Screaming Narwhal
Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 2 - The Siege of Spinner Cay
Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 3 - Lair of the Leviathan
Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 4 - The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood
Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 5 - Rise of the Pirate God
Sam & Max 301: The Penal Zone
Brainpipe
Chocolatier: Decadence by Design
Cooking Dash
Diaper Dash
Diner Dash: Hometown Hero
Dream Chronicles: The Chosen Child
Emerald City Confidential
Wandering Willows
DinerTown Tycoon
DinerTown Detective Agency
Fitness Dash
Parking Dash
Mahjong Roadshow
Trijinx
Valerie Porter
Gemini Lost
Hotel Dash
Machinarium
Galcon Fusion
KrissX
Braid
Wedding Dash 2: Rings Around the World
Zenerchi
Altitude

Neither Left4Dead or Left4Dead 2 is expected at launch. Out of the Valve games, it seems like only Portal and Team Fortress 2 are going to be at launch, while the rest will come in the following weeks.

I hope "The Half-Life Series" includes HL1. The good version, not the weirdly gimped Source version that lowered the ammo limit on satchel charges and tripmines for no reason at all.

It won't. I doubt they're integrating OpenGL in GldSrc.

Ahh that stinks. At least I'll have some TF2 to play. Been dying to get back into L4D / 2 .

I thought Counter-Strike meant 1.6. Valve are only porting Source?

Source is all that needs to be ported.

It let me install the Tales of Monkey Island games. They are downloading now so I'll have to wait until I get back from the dentist to give them a whirl. Portal ran pretty good but I am gong to have to tinker with the graphic settings because I swear it looked better via bootcamp.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that DICE wants to bring over Bad Company 2...

They've said that they are currently looking into it to see if doing one would be worthwhile. I would not be surprised if they were waiting on the Mac store for Steam to launch though. I believe they've said that the majority of their sales have come from Steam.

BF2142 was ported to Mac by Aspyr I believe. I know I saw it in Best Buy once.

Just thought I would update that if you use the "Store" exploit you can actually download and play Team Fortress 2 and Portal now.

I think I can wait 48 hours. :lol
Also, I am pretty sure that statement about it working is incorrect. I am at a friends house right now and he downloaded the beta on his Macbook and used the "exploit" to get it going and he got Portal downloaded but when he tries to start it it just spits an error message at him, serves him right for trying to get in the beta without being invited.:lol

Valve is currently testing the update to make Steam Play / Steam Cloud compatible for the Windows side:

There's a new Steam Beta client available. To access the Beta, go to File -> Settings. On the Account tab press the Change... button to open the Beta Participation dialog. Then Select Steam Client Beta, and allow Steam to restart itself. Here are the specific changes:

5/10/2010

- Win32 side support for Steam Play / Steam Cloud integration with upcoming Mac titles

Also, it seems like Valve managed to snag some individuals from Blizzard last year to help with the OSX integratation for games and Steam.

Two PC gaming gods working together to bring peace, love, and understanding to all.

Got in on the Steam beta. FINALLY.
It is probably just me, but for me it seems that it runs better on the osx side then on the windows side. :lol

Looks like I may end up caving in and buying a magic mouse.

Why on earth would you do that? Buy yourself a quality Logitech or Razer. <3 my G5.

On another note, Does anybody know what version of Source Mac TF2 is running on? Same as the Windows version?

All info from Valve indicates that the Mac and Windows versions will be kept in sync, and patches will be released simultaneously for both.

May 11, 2010 - Valve announced that Steam will launch on the Mac platform this Wednesday, May 12.

On subsequent Wednesdays, additional collections of Mac titles will become available, each designed to highlight specific functionalities of Steam on the Mac.

The first collection of Mac titles will demonstrate "Steam Play," which allows customers to purchase a game once and play it on all Steam supported platforms. Gamers who have previously purchased games on Steam will find them available in their account on the Mac as they are released.

Portal, in addition to supporting Steam Play, will be the first of Valve's Source engine based games available on the Mac. Native OS/X support for the Source engine is also available immediately to licensees for use in their games.

Among the initial titles available on Wednesday will be Runic Games' critically acclaimed Torchlight. "We're very excited to be bringing Torchlight to the Mac," said Max Schaefer, co-founder of Runic Games. "Having Steam for the Mac solves so many problems for us as a developer. We look forward to our future games coming out on the Mac as well."

In addition to bringing the online functionality of Steam to the Mac, Valve will also make its Steamworks suite of publishing and development tools available on the Mac platform. These include product key authentication, copy protection, auto-updating, social networking, matchmaking, anti-cheat technology, and more. The features and services available in Steamworks are offered free of charge and may be used for both electronic and tangible versions of games.
