• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Mac Steam has been released. Steam Play for cross-client ownership. TF2 out on Mac!

Played some Portal on my white MacBook. Performance isn't stellar. Also has fillrate issues (1280x1024 on my external monitor made it chug, 1024x768 worked out though).

ATI Radeon HD 2400 / 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac here:

1) Torchlight runs great. High settings with 2xAA at native resolution.

2) Portal not so great. Default settings are pretty low, running kinda sketchy at native resolution.

Makes me a little worried about TF2...

But, Torchlight is fab, and as soon as they sort out the Civ IV mess, I'll dl' the complete version. For some reason it's listed at Steam Play, but isn't working on the mac.

LUCASARTS ADVENTURE PACK is SteamPlay!!!!!! I cannot believe it!!!!!!!

I bought it a few months ago for USD$2.49 when on discount, even when I didn't have any Windows machine at home. I thought "what the heck I will play it on my work computer" (which is Windows obvoiusly).

Now I can enjoy the games on my Mac!!!! This is unbelievable!!! Thank you LucasArts, thank you Steam, thank you Valve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Downloaded portal, changed a few settings and the game is running fine on my 2008 macbook pro 2.4 ghz 2 gb ram nvidia 8600 gt beast :P Downloading torchlight now.

edit: What sucks is that the macbook pros are going to run REALLY HOT after like 30 mins of playtime :(

I second this.

What settings did you change? I have a 2.2ghz C2d, 8600gt w/ 4gb of RAM and am getting around 15FPS on Portal at my native resolution.

I already disabled vertical sync and put '-novid' in the boot options (does anyone know what that does by the way?).

Very happy with the client, wish Apple would get on the ball and release 10.6.4 :p.

Also, is Torchlight worth the $10 if I've never gotten into the Diablo type of game of before?

Whatever you do, don't run Torchlight in Netbook mode. It crashes instantly, and every time afterwards upon startup. I just learned that the hard way. Just saw on the Runic message boards that they know about the problem and are working on a fix as I type this.

So I'm running MPB from last year with 9400/9600. I just did the survey and it tells me I'm running 9400. Is the 9600 only active if you are running high performance in power options?

Didn't activating that card require a reboot even?

My TF2 disappeared from my games list, on mine, and my brother's account. Where is it?

Just because you're using a Mac doesn't mean you can break the time-space continuum.

Be patient.

Unless you're talking about your PC account. Then that's messed up.

Yes I am talking about my PC account. I've had this account since Steam came out for Windows. TF2 is no longer showing up as one of my owned games.

So if I buy The Orange Box right now, will I be able to download games like Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life 2 on my Mac when they are released eventually?

Go to the TF2 store page, see if you can still re-download for free.

I have TF2 but have never played it. Don't want to noob it up and such. Maybe some folks can get together though.

You should join us on the GAF server. We need more people who don't constantly voice chat!

Is the gaf server filled with n00bs or will I get owned? :lol

Aside from our knowledge of the maps, our collective "skillz" are pretty questionable. :lol

I still contend that TF2 is one of the most noob-friendly FPS games of all time. The maps are filled with arrows and labels to make sure you never get lost, and Medics and Engineers can be invaluable teammates without ever pointing and shooting at anything.

Wonder if Steam gaming catches on big time with mac users if Apple will put out higher end 3d hardware + perhaps some more up to date games in their benches!

If apple aren't selling the games from the iTunes store, apple will never care.

Perfect timing for this to launch for me, as I just got back from college. Just downloaded Portal and the Torchlight demo. Thinking of buying the Indie Games Bundle and Braid next. My username for it is cooljeanius, just like here, if you want to add me. Edit: Actually it's egallager, I was getting it confused with what I sign in with...

Restarted and everything works fine now. Portal runs great on my i7 MBP. Everything maxed all the way with what seems like a pretty decent framerate. Actually playing it with this trackpad? That's another story...

If anyone is curious, custom maps work just fine in Portal. I downloaded the Flash Portal map pack HERE. Just place the files in their respective folders within the Portal directory like you would on Windows, then click on 'Bonus Maps'.

mine paused and resumed on its own several times. just gotta be patient i guess.

any idea when TF2 and LFD2 will be available?

TF2 should be any day now. LFD2 not sure as they'd have to port that engine over.

Europa Universalis III. It is the pinacle of grand strategy games on PC, but I didn't think they made an OSX version, but it is listed under OSX compatible games along with Hearts of Iron III.
There's a Mac version already out and being sold. All that needs to be done is prep it for Steam.

Can't believe I never played torchlight before. $10 seems like I'm stealing!

I know there's a glut of questions thrown around today, but was their any word about TF2 or L4D2 dates?

No, No, No. TF2 is rumored for next week, but nothing is for sure.

Wow, the port job was pretty terrible on the Source engine. I just ran Portal on XP, and maxed out all the settings with no AA and trilinear filtering, and am getting around 50-60FPS. When I ran this on OSX I had to put everything to low, and was still only getting 10-30FPS.

Give it time.
