I thought it was an okay episode, but not great. I'm glad that Betty didn't have cancer, because I thought it would be a cheap way to garner sympathy for a character a large part of the audience do not care for.

And Roger is going to kill Pete? Bitch, please. People thought Roger was going to kill himself last season too, but this isn't that kind of show.

Yeah. Just not crazy about this episode in general. I think a large part of that is because so much of the action takes place away from SCDP. I like Betty as a character, but her scenes totally fuck with the pacing. This was also John Hamm's first directorial job, so that might have something to do with the "off" feeling. Not saying he did a terrible job or anything, but there's a learning curve.

...We already know from S1 that Betty used to be fat...
I forgot about that.

yeah i'm really glad we dont have to go through a season long cancer plot

also them making betty fat instead of pregnant was an interesting choice

unfortunately it's unintentionally funny so far

Don falling apart really wasn't interesting to me. It was downright repetitive.

season 4 is great dude.. my second favorite season

it's not all don falling apart.. he picks himself up halfway through

I'm pretty sure the writers know how much people dislike Betty. I'm sure her being fat was supposed to garner some gasps of shock and then laughter.

I don't get what was funny about betty being fat. Unless fat people just make people laugh? Do we mean the prosthetic?

So, if I go check the season 4 thread, I'll find tons of posts from you going, "Don falling apart again!? BOOOORING!"

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

What kind of garbage lipstick was Megan wearing at the dinner. It looked like she had glazed donuts and didn't wipe her mouth.

And lol, is Harry becoming anyone else's favourite? He's so pathetic.

Really hope all this Betty pays off. It came at quite the cost this week. No Joan, Ken and limited Campbell didn't leave much for anyone else of note.

Is this Hamm's first shot behind the camera?

I liked Harry when he was endearing pathetic, ala season 1, not creepy pathetic like he has been post The Wheel. This episode was the first time in a long time that he seemed kinda decent again, hopefully the trend continues.

I don't believe I was a member of this board when season four was airing. One of the biggest criticisms I've had about Mad Men is it sometimes becomes very repetitive.

I'm thinking Betty was told her tumour was malignant, she said it was benign because she doesn't know how to cope, or manage with the alternative.

not ruling this out

that was my initial thought.. there was a shot of her face as she hugged henry after the phone call

Whoa, I didn't think of this :(

Anyways the editing might feel weird because maybe Jon Hamm sucks at directing.

I could see this being the case. I could also see her telling don and not henry. DRAMA.

EDIT: I feel like Don hearing the good news from Henry was a good set-up for this conversation actually.

my wife was like, "how'd the do that with makeup and water?"
I was like, "Honey... its not her. they purposely didn't shoot her face for that shot."

Do you think she would know what malignant even means? She's dumb as shit.
Betty? Betty has a really good college education and is quite the reader actually based on what they show her reading in bed. One could assume she has more book smarts than Don.
She has her flaws, and is certainly unwise, selfish and a bit sheltered but I'm sure she knows what malignant means.

We all heard a nation's collective "FUCK PETE CAMPBELL" tonight.

I'm kinda' rooting for him this season. I too have tired of Roger's coasting and his entitled antics.... bu that shit was 2 ice cream sundaes served cold.

Fair enough.

I don't get what Pete Campbell did that was so bad? Isn't that essentially what Sterling has been doing since season 1?

Yep. He has basically made it appear officially to the office that he's in charge of
f accounts and Roger is his squire... but thats the truth and Roger is an entitled baby.

Man, I didn't think she looked too bad. Just sorta bigger. I'm guessing most of gaf only deals with them slender ladies.
Thats fine, thats fine.
More Joan for me.
^ Not really, because Roger is the one who actually got the Mohawk guys back with his obviously superior people skills and likability.

Pete runs that shit. One little bunt on Roger's part and he wants to look like a baller agan? NOPE.
Pete happily let Roger take the old failing fogeys out to drinks. Thats the only "people skills" roger seems to have anymore.

What's funny about Jones being fat is that - outside of her undeniable good looks - she really offers nothing else as an actress. Anyone who's seen her on SNL knows she can't do comedy. Her other drama roles, such as We Are Marshall or Xmen, have been forgettable. Seeing her, in what I thought was a pretty well done, fat suit, is about the only thing I can think of that could make her interesting on screen at all. And the fact the it took her to actually get knocked up in real life to put all of this in motion in the first place is even funnier still.

I guess I don't get the joke. I find betty to be pretty compelling outside of Jones' stiff acting (which feels appropriate to the character) and good looks. I guess I also didn't find her to be ugly as a fat woman either.

Nope, Pete was desperately trying to hide his meetings so Roger couldn't show him up, but of course he still did. Then he tries his pathetic attempt at a power play in stealing Roger's office and ends up with a pity-office that Roger bought for him with pocket change. Roger = the boss. Pete Campbell = needs to cry some more.

I went back and watched the trailer for this weeks episode, and man do they do a good job of cutting those shots together to make them seem compelling. Almost all of the dialogue with no context sounds so sensational. Yet, when you watch and see what the characters are referencing, its mostly nothing at all.
