Mad Men - Season 5 - Sundays on AMC

I just watched it and well, I think what the hell is up with 2012? In sports and in TV shows, very odd year indeed.

This season is, symbolically what everyone is finding the truth about themselves and the realization of what drives them. It's hamfisted, yes, but I quite like it. It seems that the writers know the endgame and are having fun, a departure from earlier seasons which was mostly devoted to the mystery of Don. I like that everyone is aware of themselves and their motives.

Have to agree about that scene at the end where no-one understood what Laine meant and then clapped when it was explained. No way these smart copywriters are that dumb. Cheap writing.
.
I think some of you are totally missing the point of that scene, The reason Lane was being very vague about telling the staff that they are all getting bonus' except for himself and his four other partners was because he was positioned to say (do) something he didn't want to. He was frustrated with all his money troubles, here he is telling people he won't be able to get away with his debts but the rest of them would be getting checks for Christmas!

In his own pathetic mind, he was hoping they won't understand and know about the bonuses, thus they won't expect it, and then maybe he can use that money for his own needs, it's a great way for the writers to show us the mind of a financially troubled and frustrated man, trying to desperately scavenge money in any way he can.

Let's face it! We're all done similar things in our lives in th name of greed, like the time you saw your friend leaving while forgetting to take his video game back home with him, and you deliberately kept your mouth shut, when you should've reminded him to take his game. Or your big bro, forgetting his awesome sweater, t-shirt, hat etc.. In your room/car etc. etc.

Does anyone else even look at the finances? Lane could just slip himself in there with the rest of the workers for a bonus.

It's funny that there are so many ways he could easily get the money, like just telling the other partners or asking from a loan from one of them because let's face it, Don and Roger wipe their ass with $8000. His stupid pride getting in the way.

Yep, Lane could have easily explained his situation to at least Don, if not all his partners, and got the 8000 no problem. Don covered Pete's 50,000 dollars last season and Pete barely said anything. Oh Lane you suffer for no reason.

I was thinking that the way Lane acted may also be related to his current lack of confidence regarding his position in the company. During his conversation with Joan earlier this season he went on about feeling like he's not really useful there ("what do I do here? I mean, truly"). So yeah, his pride and him not wanting to appear weak. Maybe he was afraid of mentioning his tax problem and hearing an answer like "huh aren't you a finances guy, how did this happen" or something.

I wonder if Harry will face repercussions from the Krishna lady for doing exactly what she told him not to do. I would think yes, but I also can't really see them spending much more time with him this season.

I doubt that we'll ever see or hear from Paul Kinsey ever again, nor any of his Krishna friends.

Really, I think that plot's primary purpose was to develop Harry's character, and seeing Paul again was only secondary. I don't envision that plot ever returning, but you never know with this show.

Mad Men is one of the few shows that is always good, even when it's bad compared to itself, and that just continues to get better and better. Breaking Bad is the only other show I can think of that is like that.

Isn't that why he got the money? He took a bullet for Don after his past cost the firm client. It was hush money.

This season of MM could easily be the best season of a TV series ever.

Why must they tease me! I've wanted Don/Joan since Season 1, but no Don has to be happy going home to betty 2.0. God dammit Don.

Also fuck lane, Don or Roger would have loaned him 8 grand no questions asked. Hope he gets his ass beat/fired.

Alright, Homeland is great, but the way they rush closed the season precludes it from best season of anything.

This season isn't even the best season of Mad Men. 3 is probably the best insofar, although 4 had my two favorite episodes (Suitcase and Waldorf Stories).

Mad Men has had an interesting trajectory for me. S1 was great, but then S2 improved upon it in leaps and bounds. And then S3 blew that sky high. But then S4 was kind of a step back down to S2 levels, and so has S5 been.

- Tom & Lorenzo with Mad Style: Christmas Waltz
It feels like we start every week by saying there wasn’t too much to delve into, costume-wise – and then we go off for another 1500 words on the costumes. We’re always pleasantly surprised when we manage to eke out some thoughts, but honest and for true: we really went over this one with a fine-toothed comb and not a lot presented itself to us. Whenever an episode is dominated by men in suits, you can bet there’s not going to be as much to talk about as just one scene with Betty at a suburban Weight Watchers meeting. And when we weren’t treated to scenes of men in suits this episode, we were treated to scenes with men in matching Hare Krishna robes.

Odd episode. I see a lot of people praising the Don and Joan bit, but not enough discussion regarding the dinner scene that followed. Don got his ass sat down. It's interesting that Megan acts like a child, but gets what she wants, while Betty who also acts like a child, doesn't get shit. And I feel it's because Megan is straight to the point. Much like Don, she's blunt about what she wants. It's obviously the only language that he understands.

Always fascinated how we can potentially read so much into the character of Don through the actions of the other characters.

That, and also It's because Megan gets angry about legit shit, whereas Betty got angry over childish shit. This Betty 2.0 stuff is nonsense.

I think the main issue with the season is that it very much feels like a transition. This season, more than any other, has really focused on the transformation that American society underwent in the mid- to late-60s.

Everyone is acting bizarre and unstable. Not that they weren't before, but they seem to be having a harder time masking their discontent. Pete has pretty much always been a creepy little shit, but he's never been so blatantly unhappy with his marriage. Peggy's meteoric rise has started to level off, and she's getting paranoid about her work and her competition. Don cannot handle both a functional marriage and a successful career simultaneously. Roger is a total fucking mess.

This season is really, really screwy. In a good way, but it's been a pretty significant tonal shift. Everyone is finally breaking out of that repressive 50s culture and starting to open up, though most of them are fighting it.

In any case, I'm expecting some pretty big bombshells at the end of the season that will set the show on its final course toward the end.

I suppose we'll need the full season to truly conclude its quality as a whole; but it's just not working for me the same way it has before. Megan Pare and her awful teeth acting playing a large role in that.

I really thought that it WAS Juliette Lewis. Ha.

Nope. Lakshmi Singh is a reporter on NPR, so I'm really used to it.

I keep thinking of this:

My crew is small but unstoppable like Terry Gross
My tunes are witty and topical like Terry Gross
My rhymes are sharply intelligent like Terry Gross
OK so I’m in love with Terry Gross
And Renee Montagne and Lakshmi Singh
I want Carl Kassell’s voice on my answering machine

Yeah, I saw the articles that said Jessica Pare was submitting in the lead actress category for the Emmys and laughed. She's easily the worst actress on the show.

If there's any justice that Emmy belongs to Claire Danes.

ITT: Fans of wannabe shows compare thier favorites with the King.

There are only two shows I put above Mad Men, and MM once concluded may take them down.

My rankings exactly pretty much.

And also Luck > all shows this year. I'm confident on that. Including the glorious return of Boardwalk Empire.
