1. PS2 unit sales are down 448K units (30% drop). Dollar-wise, last year’s Madden made $21M more in sales than this year’s 2 SKU’s including the HOF edition…

2. Xbox and Xbox 360 sales, 3 SKU’s sold 141K more units than last year Xbox only (20% rise). Dollar-wise, this year’s Madden generated $13M more in sales

3. NDS and GBA continue to post very weak numbers...

4. First month PSP sales (released in Sep last year) are down by 32K (39% drop) or $2M

5. Overall sales by units are down by 290K (320K if you include PSP) or 13% and overall sales by dollar are down $9M even with 9 SKU’s compared to 5 last year

EA did issue a carefully-worded PR last week saying sales of Madden are UP 12% (unit-wise) for the first week...

19 days on sale for the NPD period for Madden 06. 5 days on sale in the NPD period for Madden 07.

What is impressive to me is in 5 days the 360 version sold within 100K of what the Xbox version did last year in 19 days. At higher pricepoints.

Between the two editions it generated the same amount of money two weeks sooner.

The 360 number just blows me away. It made about $35 million to the PS2's $49 million, on a userbase of literally something like 7% that of the PS2 (just in America). That's impressive as hell.

Why?

PS2 has seen many Maddens.. and it's the same shit every year. 360-version also costs more.

Good point Luckyman. Those sales are not impressive. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'd imagine a lot of people who may have purchased the PS2 or XBOX versions in the past simply went with the 360 version this time around. I mean, why not?

True but most Madden sales are front-loaded, it should be interesting to compare two months numbers head-to-head...

For the hell of it, I went back and got Madden 05 numbers (the year ESPN 2K5 was released) and sales were better even then dollar and unit-wise (with less SKUs)

PS2 MADDEN NFL 2005 1,112,588 $54,142,420
XBX MADDEN NFL 2005 509,100 $25,103,580
PS2 MADDEN NFL 2005 COLL 395,811 $23,390,230
GCN MADDEN NFL 2005 87,404 $4,307,765
GBA MADDEN NFL 2005 $590,563 20,588

Sales of Madden have really been flat even without any competition...

Yeah Madden sales have not shot up a ton with the license agreement. But then when you are selling 5 to 6 million annually, how much more can you expect? The good news about the agreement is EA gets more access to other NFL material, like NFL Films and the like.

I disagree about Madden sales being front loaded though. In December the Madden games usually do about 75 percent of launch month numbers. Sometimes more.

I think EA's exclusive agreement with the NFL was more to stave off the $20 price point than anything. Without NFL 2kX selling at a much cheaper price point, they can keep their launch price at 50/60/70 and keep it there longer since there isn't a cheaper alternative available.

Umm.. the fact it costs more is irrelevant. If you want to go on a unit basis instead, the 360 version sold almost 60% of that of the PS2 version with about 7% of the userbase. The fact that the PS2 has had so many Maddens works in its favor -- there's big time brand loyalty to the product and the system.

I dont see how it's possible to downplay the amazing success of Madden 360, but feel free to continue doing so if you want.

With or w/o any competition there are only so many people who play football video games. I mean the only way you are going to get the sales figure much higher would be to trick the people who generally hate sports games.

:lol if anything this has been the most incredible year for madden yet. it has launched the latest it has in years (it had been launching at the beginning of august for the past 4 or 5 years)

i am happy to see the 360 version looking so good sales-wise. oh wait, we are supposed to be mad about madden selling. growl

Actually, at least according to the data at vgcharts.org (I know), the holiday period is actually the big selling period for Madden.

exactly

and don't think for a minute that publishers aren't going to notice that 360 owners... buy games.

the attach rate seems to be pretty danged good in general.
