Madden NFL Franchise Celebrates its Silver Anniversary with All-New Madden NFL 25 This August

The Old School and the New School Face Off in New Cover Vote across ESPN Platforms and SportsNation Beginning Monday, March 11

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- North America's longest-running sports video game franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, as Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) has officially announced Madden NFL 25, launching on August 27. This year's game will feature the Madden NFL 25 name when it launches in August, plus a new fan Cover Vote will pit the NFL's greatest legends against today's hottest stars.

"There's no better way to celebrate and mark the culmination of 25 years of innovation than by naming this year's game Madden NFL 25," said Cam Weber, General Manager of American Football for EA SPORTS. "This year's game will push the boundaries with gameplay and feature innovations that will lay a very strong foundation for the next 25 years of this storied franchise."

The past and the future collide in the newest Madden NFL Cover Vote across ESPN platforms and SportsNation, which will see the old school take on the new school for the historically-significant cover. A bracket of 32 all-time NFL greats will go head-to-head against one another, as will 32 modern NFL superstars, with the winners of each bracket facing off in the final round. Voting will start on Monday, March 11 on ESPN.com/MaddenVote, and fans can tune into a special edition of SportsNation at 4:00pm EST on ESPN2 for the live unveil of the brackets. Last year, fans cast 20 million votes to name Calvin Johnson, Jr. as the cover athlete of Madden NFL 13 during a special reveal show of SportsNation live from Times Square in New York City.

"It's great to be back with another year of the award-winning Madden NFL Cover Vote for a brand-new game that will be the deepest and most innovative in the history of the franchise when it launches in August," said Anthony Stevenson, Senior Director of Marketing at EA SPORTS. "This year we're posing the ultimate question of who's more deserving; one of the NFL's all-time greats or one of today's hottest players?"

"This is the third consecutive year EA SPORTS and ESPN have collaborated on the Madden NFL Cover Vote in its current iteration," added Raphael Poplock, Vice President of Games and Partnerships for ESPN. "Each year has brought record-setting results as NFL fans come out in droves to support their favorite players and teams, and by going big this year with legends facing off against the league's current leaders, needless to say it will be an interesting vote with much debate and discussion."

"SportsNation is built around social engagement and topics our young audience cares about, so the Madden NFL Cover Vote is a great fit for us," said Jamie Horowitz, Vice President of Original Programming and Production for ESPN. "Our new host, Marcellus Wiley, played with the old school guys and Charissa Thompson is a new school fan, so I expect them to find fun ways to push this vote in social and on TV."

Embraced by fans and honored by critics for 25 years, Madden NFL is known as the NFL's "33rd Franchise" due to its authentic gameplay, the development team's unparalleled access to NFL resources and its prominent place in NFL culture. Since its beginning as "John Madden Football," the franchise has sold through approximately 99 million units and generated more than $3.7 billion in net revenue.

Madden NFL 25 is developed in Orlando, Florida by EA Tiburon and will be available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system for $59.99. ...

-Title change
-No Wii U or Vita announcement
-Next gen?

Yeah yeah another Madden but a couple interesting things.

I wonder how much Madden actually gets paid for having his name on the game anymore. I'm sure he could demand millions as EA is probably scared shitless of changing the name and possibly losing any revenue from it.

Why are they called the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system? Are they the "official" names?

edit: also, I think all our interpretations of EA's vision of the Wii U were just confirmed.

After rumors began to spring up that EA would be dropping the name "Madden" from the game it was announced that Mr. Madden himself had signed a multi-year licensing deal which would allow his likeness and name to be used in the games for the next 10 years. The deal was reportedly worth $150 million.

If that's true, $15 million a year.

The last few Madden games have been crap.

It would be nice if a dev would make a good football game without the NFL license. I'd rather have a great playing game without real teams and players than I would the endless cycle of mediocrity we get now.

Which "EA Gen" did Madden start again? lol

People only want Madden because only in Madden can they play as their favorite teams. Football games without the big names are nothing, unfortunately.

No Wii U, no 3DS...not even Vita.

Heres my guess, Madden 14 for Wii U, Orbis and Durango.

If so, this is a very smart way to show users that 360/PS3 versions are completely different games and more likely to just be roster updates. Last gen's transition was really damaging I think because people would see next gen versions and then buy the PS2 version and be very disappointed.

They should have dropped him years ago. It should be NFL 14. They have FIFA and NHL, just stick to the script. Maybe after this 25 year anniversary.

if you think its bad now, wait until the "next-gen" version when they strip every feature out of reset the franchise

EA getting exclusive NFL license was worst thing happened in the industry...competition drives better games.

They already did. Both Blitz and Backbreaker were awesome and we're never getting any more because you bought shitty madden, so thanks.

They more than likely won't do that.

They'll probably make an updated port of the PS3/360 version and then release a "full next gen" version when it's ready. EA doesn't want to go through that again.

But yeah, this name is really strange. 25 years is a milestone but still... what's the next game (after) going to be called? So weird to me.

There has to be more versions. I assume they don't list PS4/720 because they don't want to share the official names before the launch of the system.

Two games also makes sense being that the new systems most likely won't be out by August.

Er...no other version besides PS3/360?

Madden 13 was on 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U, and Vita.

It's not totally unreasonable to drop the Wii version at this point, and presumably it will show up on the PS4 and Xbox 720 at launch.

This will be released on every system available.

Well, Madden does release on a lot less systems than FIFA (5 versus 11-12 for the last time around).

13 was actually the first year this generation that had a substantial upgrade. It can only get better, but the bar is fairly low still.

I know the Wii U version bombed, but being only for PS3/360 (and, presumably, PS4 and Durango when those consoles launch) would be a pretty remarkable move away from EA's previous platform-agnostic strategy with the franchise. I mean, they still released a GC version in 2007, a Wii version last year, and a PSP version in 2011. They're usually not quick to abandon a platform.

If the lack of Wii/Wii U/Vita/3DS versions is legit, which is actually quite possible, I guess the absence of a 3DS version last year may have been the first sign.
