Mafia III - 12 minute gameplay demo

Looks awesome to me!

The setting is interesting (the only other game I can remember playing in New Orleans was inFamous 2)

The shooting looks great too, it looks heavy, and I like the way bodies fall, it reminds me of Mafia 2 which I thought was great also.

The driving looks rad as well, I love the bombastic approach, it looks like an action movie.

Those executions were brutal. Hopefully they have a bunch and they don't get old after a while though.

I'm not a fan of the hyper-violent knife takedowns, but the thing that gets me is why does Lincoln get no blood on him at all? I mean, if he's holding onto these guys and stabbing them repeatedly in the face or chest, he'd be getting shit loads of blood on his clothes, which means that he couldn't walk through clubs or walk along the streets like that. I also don't like how he blind-fires that revolver around a corner and doesn't get enormous amounts of kickback from trying to fire a high-calibre weapon like that single-handed.

Anyway, I really like the physics at play here on the characters and the environments, and the lighting is really gorgeous. Just a shame that the gameplay as a whole looks rather mediocre.

He only seems to get his own blood spilled on him. The blood decals only show up after him getting shot. It's nothing dynamic, but then few games can be like Overgrowth ;)

What the fuck?

I'm not seeing the problem here.

I often want much more diversity in games exploring other cultural norms / history / locations and getting other perspective than Caucasian male. As such it becomes something of interest for lots of people seeking something different and interesting in a narrative. As a brown south Asian / Brit man, I'd probably be drawn to exploring a game's narrative even if it was a third person action adventure laden with quick time events and over prescribed game mechanics (a genre I hate), purely because it could be something I relate a bit to more than others filled with American tropes. I would do exactly the same for many other games with a protagonist of different races / sex / cultures / locations where the game has a strong narrative or historical focus, because it is just damn interesting and great to empathise with something different.

Cars blowing-up on impact sure looks dumb. Didn't really expect it to be realistic, but game looks arcady in some ways. Hopefully the plot holds up.

Edit: Tired of these gameplay parts as in 10:36, wave of obstacle enemy cars, with red arrows showing the enemies.

Some gorgeous new Mafia III screens from Seth Rosen's GDC presentation.

Looking very good. Setting is definitely great.

The only thing I'm a little worried about is the gameplay looking kind of arcadey.

I kind of wish it leaned more towards Mafia 1 with the very, very grounded gameplay, car gameplay especially. It felt very nice.

It seems quite a bit more arcadey than Mafia 2 from the gameplay we've seen so far at least. Still looking forward to it as I love the series but I hope for a little more grounded stuff.

Maybe on PC we'll get mods for that hopefully.

The city's name is New Bordeaux.

Looks like we'll hear more next Tuesday!

Adam Sessler's moderating a Mafia 3 PAX panel next week.
Join the Hangar 13 team as they discuss the process of creating a development studio and progressing an iconic franchise into a unique new setting, with a new protagonist taking on the Italian mob instead of working for it. Grab a seat early for exclusive PAX East Mafia III swag!

Goodness, I'm so eager for any news on this game. That concept art still has me filled with hype. PAX East can't come soon enough for some new previews, screens and even a release date.

SOON.

I can't believe this is coming out at the end of the month... I haven't heard anything about this in months.

They keep posting the same screenshots and video clips over and over again on their Twitter.

I was really hyped for this after I loved Mafia 2, but nothing has happened since the initial reveal.

I can't believe this is coming out at the end of the month... I haven't heard anything about this in months.

Is it? As far as I know, the April 26th was just rumored and hasn't been officially announed yet, so I guess it won't come this month, considering the zero marketing traction It has and I think 2K wouldn't send it to die.

I'm liking it so far, everyone saying it looks low res and mediocre.....keep in mind this is still pre-alpha and they haven't even announced a release date yet.

honestly, looks terrible. 1 and 2 were really good. plus, the acting on both were great. the character looks generic af. beefed up guy. hope story is good.

Art direction and environments look stellar. Still very hesitant on the overall game. The car sequences don't give me a "Mafia" vibe at all. They're almost oldschool GTA comedy style.

the city looks absolutely amazing. hope it isnt just window dressing like it was in the previous games.

also dont understand why ppl didnt like the gameplay, looks fun to me

Love the setting and potential story, but the over-the-top hollywood action is really disappointing. I would have been ridiculously excited for this if it was taking a grounded approach similar to the previous games, but instead it just looks like a really fun open-world arcade shooter. Also, since this game includes an older Vito, if I were to play this directly after Mafia 2, the shift in tone would just be too damn strong. So strong to the point that I wouldn't consider this sequel canon. It sounds silly, but in it's current state, I don't consider Mafia 3 canon.

The game does appear very "gamey" and arcadey so far, that's my only gripe with it so far.

I do love the setting though, not being a typical NY/LA setting is extremely welcome.

How many other games have even been set in Southern US or NO/Louisiana anyway? Can't be many at all.

I like the over-the topness of the vehicle action but at the same time it just makes me dream of a more gangsta-oriented Saints Row game. I hope they tone it down a bit so they don't alienate Mafia fans (if they haven't already by making the protagonist black lol).

And shame shame shame on you for bumping this thread with no new information!

I want to be excited for this because the original Mafia is one of the GOAT and Mafia 2 was excellent but I don't know what it is about this I am just not liking it.

Not sure if it's the setting? Or the fact it's too over the top? Or the fact the gameplay just doesn't look exciting?

I really can't put my finger on it.

Is it because it looks a little more "arcadey" compared to Mafia 2?

In Mafia 2, you didn't run into a car and watch it blow up right infront of you.

It was a game that punished you for going over the speed limit. And I loved that, personally.

Wario mentioned on Twitter Mafia III will release the same month as Gears of War 4. So we'll likely get a release date tomorrow as well.
They basically confirmed that we'll get a release date tomorrow.

@2K_UK i hope for a release date also

@Cristi9Petrisor Hope you're excited to tune in tomorrow! #Mafia3

This looks awesome. The combat looks great fun, lots of impact and tonnes of animation types and finishers. Also like the music and general atmosphere. Only issue is it all looks a bit easy, and I also feel like it could get monotonous over time. Hopefully the missions mix things up a lot, and don't go Ubi style rinse repeat collectathon.

Really love Mafia 2.

This looks pretty damn good, but I don't know if it really looks like a Mafia game. Will have to keep an eye on it. I hope the story is good.
